Chương 18: Chapter 16 Not a child, but a master
Second round began with excitement and despair. Almost half of the participants were eliminated from the writing exam because of their inadequate literacy. Some people even demanded second chances, but the officers denied their requests mercilessly.
Licht was wearing his gear. A plain old armor with a wooden sword. He didn't pick up any other weapons because he wanted to show his best.
Licht looked in a mirror and saw his reflection. His handsome face was flawless without any scars. However, he was trembling. He was trembling with excitement.
He licked his lips and picked up his sword. Likewise, he took a deep breath and gazed at the door with a calm gaze. He knew what was waiting behind the door. It was the beginning of his story.
Licht grabbed the old rusty door handle. He opened the door in a second and went out with energy. His eyes were burning with passion due to his high rush of adrenaline.
Thump*
His heart was thumping harder than he thought. He looked at the crack of the training field. The blood wasn't dried up yet, which indicated the fierce battle. Although it was just a spar, people wanted to get into the officers' eyes. They wanted to go to the better army and better squad.
Licht clenched his fists tightly and looked up. Colonel was looking at him with a serious gaze. His silver badge was shining under the sunlight along with his black hair.
" Licht Silvercrest vs. Eric Crudeman. Match start."
His opponent was a bulky man with a scimitar. He wasn't wearing an armor, unlike Licht. Eric felt lucky when he heard his match was just a brat. He disdained weak people.
" Licht, right? Give up. I won't hurt you if you do that."
Licht slightly narrowed his eyes to show his displeasure. A warrior should show respect to his opponents whether he was a weakling or not. A person who disrespected other's honor is no warrior.
Licht coldly pointed his sword at him and ran towards him with incredible speed. In a blink of an eye, he appeared next to him and placed his sword on his neck.
" Surrender."
Eric looked at him with horror. He never imagined Licht would be this monstrous. His power and speed outclassed him in every way.
" I give up."
Colonel looked at Licht with interest because he saw his strength. Especially, when he dashed with such explosive speed, one could see he wasn't a newbie. He glared at him with hatred and envy. He gnashed his teeth and left the field with anger.
" Licht Silvercrest, you have passed the test. Wait, your results."
Licht nodded with approval and went back to the hotel. He didn't try to find Cynthia because he was frustrated from the earlier fight. He wasn't in mood to speak with others.
Licht sat on the bed while looking outside the window. His sharp vision allowed him to see the whole street.
" Hey, Viktor. Do you think people would change?"
Viktor fell into silence. He silently observed Licht's face and found he was unusually calm.
" Why do you ask?"
Licht didn't answer. He was thinking about his future because today's fight enlightened him. He was afraid of himself. Life wasn't an easy road, it would engulf him like others someday.
Maybe he will forget himself and find his darkest nature. That's why he was afraid. He would rather not become a person like Eric.
" Life is hard to follow, Licht. You are too young for this question. Light exists with darkness. Everyone has darkness inside them, even you. The main thing is how to control them. If you allow yourself to fall into grasp of your desires, you will face the consequences later or not."
Licht listened to his words carefully. He wasn't anxious or nervous about being a monster, but he was afraid to hurt his loved ones. He didn't want wealth or fame. He just wanted justice in this world like his grandpa.
Today, he learned about greed. Greed is one of the primal desire of humans and other living beings. Even the brightest person would lose their path under this sin. Honor and etiquette don't apply to it. It was the darkness that will answer his questions someday.
