Chương 59: He Who Reveal Their Change
Duncan knew that sleeping beside Julie was not a good idea, especially with the kids around. Nicole had this curious nature that was constantly asking questions, and Claude's perspective with the things around him.
His kids-to-be were intelligent. So it was no wonder some immortals want to get their hands on them. If Fujin's presence was any indication, the process of turning them into a full immortal was so slow for him.
He remained unmoving. Savoring the rare moments with the woman he had claimed his. She was still sleeping and he did not want to leave her side.
The way her hand was resting on his collarbone was something that Duncan knew was rare. He was a light sleeper, and he was amazed at how Julie never moved while sleeping.
He looked at her, her mouth was slightly open and there was a faint sign of drool on her lip. Duncan carefully wiped it and pulled her closer to his embrace. Julie's response was to rub her nose against his chest like a cat.
Duncan grinned and looked at the door. He had forgotten to fully close it, and Nicole was standing in the doorway, hugging one of her stuffed toys. Fall was also up, because he nudged the door open and walked to his side. The dang mutt was tugging the sheet from him.
Rather than be angry, he petted his head and gestured to Nicole to come in. The little girl shuffled her way inside and stood beside Fall. There was an innocent way she stood. Her eyes kept looking at the way her mom's sleeping position was. Julie had buried her face on the valley between his shoulders.
"Nightmare?" he asked, then waited for a nod before asking, "very bad?" another nod was given. "Want to cuddle with me and mommy?" Duncan then lifted the sheet that Fall kept on tugging and waited for Nicole to slide on the other side of the bed.
Duncan had to stop himself from laughing. Like mother, like daughter, because Nicole did the same thing Julie had done on the other side. Nicole's face was buried on his side and she was rubbing her nose on his skin.
Duncan gently patted Nicole's head, until she had fallen asleep once more. Fall was resting his head on the bed, his eyes had this solemn look about them. He reached out and gave Fall a gentle rub before saying, "We protect what is ours, Failinis. The process is slow, but they are getting there."
As if he understood, Fall, let out a whine of discontent. Duncan chuckled, and continued, "We were introduced to this world far differently from them, mo ghille. Have patience, The Oracle had started the process long before we had met, that incident..."
"So, you have also met her..."
Julie's sudden voice made Duncan pause. When he looked at her, she was slowly rubbing his chest with her eyes closed. He removed his hand from Fall's head and held on to her caressing one. He felt her sigh and cuddled closer to him.
"You have met her?" he asked, holding his breath. Duncan was unsure if it was a good idea, for all he knows, Julie was talking about another thing.
"Nicole's first birthday. She was kind enough to inform me that she was sharing my child's body." Julie answered, not bothering to open her eyes, but he could still hear the traces of fear in her voice.
"What did you feel when she showed herself to you?"
She peered up to him and said, "Shocked was an understatement, I was more worried about the consequences. She was just a year old, and I was not prepared for it. With two souls living inside her…"
"You were worried about who and what she will be," Duncan finished, he felt her sigh, a sign that till now she was still thinking about that particular incident.
"Yes, but as far as I can see, there was nothing to worry about. Unless you can count on the sudden bouts of prediction."
"How often did that happen?" Duncan asked while rubbing Julie's back.
"Surprisingly, once every two years. And, it would last only for a minute or two. Thank heavens the donor was never around," Julie replied, opening her eyes to look up at him. "In each episode, she would be visiting my dream.Reassuring me, I wanted to hate her, The Oracle, but how can I? She made sure that both my children were safe. Most of the vision was more on their safety…but…"
"The day of the drowning, they thought it was safe, there were no visions," he felt her nod, but the fear that he had almost lost them came rushing back. "They are okay, Julie. Nicole is with us, see. All is well."
"They are…"Julie sat up, and leaned over him. Duncan's heart melted in how she gently caressed her daughter's hair. The love she had for her was written all over her face.
"What happens to us now?"
The question was quietly asked, if not for his sensitive ears, he would have not heard it. "We wait," Duncan cupped her nape and rubbed his thumb on the base of her skull. She turned her head and looked at him with her loving eyes, Duncan pulled her close and claimed her lips.
She tasted like berries and cream. He should be concerned about morning breath, but as he glided his tongue on the surface of her lips and Julie opened her mouth, he was lost.
He wanted to take her, claim her. But it was not the right time. Not with Nicole sleeping beside them and not with the door wide open. Most especially, not with Colin and Fujin around.
Duncan reluctantly parted his lips from his, and gently kissed her forehead. "To answer the question inside your head, yes, all of you will, and are changing. Our kids' transitions are slow, and I want to be much faster. Some of the gods have set their eyes on them. Having Fujin, Thor, and Colin with us is not enough. Claude…"
"Has finally understood his talent," she finished.
Duncan nodded, a feeling of dread settled on his chest. He had finally told her what was happening to them, and she accepted it like a fish out of water. He should be happy, so why does it feel like something big was going to happen. An event that would test the bond that was slowly being formed between them.
As the morning sun continues to rise, all they can hope is that world they are building together will not crumble.
