Chương 75: A Defender Arrived
She walked over to the group of women closest to her and greeted them with a curtsy.
"Greeting to you ladies, my name is Zhao Xing." She was sure her etiquette teacher would be satisfied with her performance.
But in response all she got was their disdainful look. She didn't know what else she had expected.
Zhao Xing pursed her lips.
'Heh, these ladies are really something.'
"Isn't this the Crown Prince's benefactor? Turns out your name is Zhao Xing?" One of them stood out to speak. She slowly walked up to her.
"Yes" she responded with a smile.
The lady smiled, "This one has heard a lot about you."
'Oh?'
There wasn't much information about her circulating in the first place, if there was any, it should be mostly rumors and none of them would be true, so what did she hear?
"This one only just arrived the capital, and is not familiar with how things work, this one also has only stayed in the Crown Prince's manor since arriving, I wonder where this lady got information about me?"
The other ladies kept staring at her, others from other groups would peek at this direction curiously.
The one that had spoken felt a bit embarrassed, it was true that she had heard a lot about her. She thought Zhao Xing would be a bit stupid and be happy that someone like herself paid attention to a peasant like her. Now that Zhao Xing had said she had never steeped foot out of the Crown Prince's manor then how would anyone say anything about her?
Most of the things she heard where rumors and almost no one said anything good about her, she had wanted to indirectly insult her, but now she couldn't.
"Sigh, Meilian, don't tell me you believe all those things you hear outside. They're mostly rumors."
This voice came out of nowhere, when Zhao Xing turned to find who was talking she saw a girl walking up to them, wearing fiery red clothes, her hair held up in a high ponytail, looking unrestrained.
The girl addressed as Meilian frowned when she saw the girl approaching.
"Sister Yi…" The girls in the group all curtsied and greeted her, except the girl named Meilian. She seemed to be of a higher rank than them. Seeing this Zhao Xing also greeted her.
The girl nodded at them and approached Zhao Xing.
"Eh? So it's you that saved Older Brother?"
When Zhao Xing heard the way she had addressed the Crown Prince, her brain started working at high speed.
Hardly did anyone visit the Crown Prince's manor, nor had she ever heard that the Crown Prince had an unmarried sister that still lived in the Capital, or even in the Empire! Then who was this young lady exactly?
Though she didn't know who this Sister Yi was, the girl did seem friendly, so in the end Zhao Xing answered her in a relaxed manner,
"This one doesn't have any parents, and I watched my little brother being killed before my eyes by bad people I regret not being able to save him, when I saw them attacking the Crown Prince I had only wanted to warn him, I didn't expect to be hit…"
The girl addressed as sister Yi nodded in satisfaction, "Now that you're Big Brother's benefactor, you're also I, Tang Rongyi's friend. Before big brother wouldn't let me visit him, but now I have a good reason to go to his manor."
She declared this before the group of girls, and their faces changed.
They knew this Tang Rongyi, her grandfather was a well-known and respected General, that worked closely with the previous emperor. Even the present Emperor gave the Tang household much face.
Now that it has been declared that this little peasant girl was Tang Rongyi's friend, anyone that offended her would be directly offending Tang Rongyi. The girls present, they came from respectable families, but if they had to be compared to the Tang family, it was best to not cause trouble for themselves.
But this wasn't the point right? How could Tang Rongyi just randomly pick up friends? She was always acting high and mighty. Why today of all days? Why this peasant?
Zhao Xing was also surprised that this Tang Rongyi wanted to be her friend, and immediately thought there might be a reason behind her friendliness, it's just that she hadn't noticed any hostility towards her at all.
Only few knew that both Tang Rongyi and the Meilian girl were on bad terms.
'Tang Rongyi, you're doing this on purpose.' Meilian thought to herself.
She gritted her teeth and tried to calm down. Though her family wasn't as powerful as the Tang family, at least she was the Third Miss of the Xiang household, born to the first wife, and the apple of her father's eyes.
She had been spoilt since young, and was arrogant. She couldn't take the slightest disgrace. Because of the argument she had the last time with Tang Rongyi, her father had her grounded for a few days. She had never suffered such humiliation, and now this girl was standing right in front of her just to cause trouble.
Xiang Meilian was in a foul mood. "Tang Rongyi, I didn't know you would attend today's banquet, you who is always around traveling here and there, never having time to settle down."
"How can that be? I heard that older brother had come back, and I immediately returned, who would have thought I'd hear about how he was attacked on the way. If not for Miss Zhao here I don't know if my brother would be able to stand here with us."
"This girl? Save the Crown Prince? The Crown Prince is so powerful, how could people easily hurt him?" Xiang Meilian retorted.
Tang Rongyi only smiled disdainfully. "Xiang Meilian ah, better watch your mouth, we're in the palace right now. The Crown Prince had said it himself, Zhao Xing took an arrow for him, if you're saying it like this, so you mean to say that my Older Brother isn't telling the truth?"
Xiang Meilian turned pale as she looked around her, the girls around didn't say a word and bowed their heads. They had been on her side in the beginning, well that was until Tang Rongyi came. They didn't have the guts to argue with her.
