Chương 14: Chapter 14 - Ninja Academy Class 1A
Soon, Mikumo arrived with Ayane inside the academy building and they made their way into the dean's office.
The two entered to see an elderly man sitting at a desk reviewing paperwork. As soon as he saw the visitors, he smiled.
"Ooh, well if it isn't Ayane. I heard you would be coming, here have a seat. How have you been?"
Ayane's rare smile finally made an appearance as she recognized the old man speaking to her.
"Principal, it's been a long time. I've been well, thank you for asking."
The dean smiled and nodded happily.
"Good good, and who do we have here?"
Ayane handed the dean a stack of papers while Mikumo introduced herself.
"Mikumo Kashima, I'm gonna be starting school at the academy here today!"
The dean reviewed the paperwork brief and then nodded with a smile.
"Very good, everything is already in order and approved. You will be joining the first-year class, Mikumo-chan. Ayane-chan, do you still remember where class 1A is located?"
"Yes, sir."
"Alright, here take this document and go ahead and bring her over there now. The class hasn't started yet, give it to the instructor in charge. You can tell him about the circumstance as well."
"Understood, I'll be off then. It was nice to see you again, Principal."
The dean smiled once more and waved them off.
"Good luck, Mikumo-chan. Ayane-chan, I hope to see you again."
Ayane nodded with a smile and exited the room with Mikumo.
Mikumo was then led by Ayane around the building till they reached the classroom marked 1A.
Ayane knocked on the door to get the chunin instructor's attention and then opened the door.
"Oh, hello! Can I help you?"
Ayane stepped into the classroom with Mikumo and walked towards the instructor, along the way, Mikumo was greeted by curious gazes, interesting looks, and a few gasps by the children sitting in the room.
Ayane handed the chunin instructor a document and he quietly read it quickly before nodding.
"I see, I see. You are...?"
"Ayane."
"Ayane-san, thank you."
The chunin instructor then turned to Mikumo and smiled.
"My name is Tooru Onizuka, you can call me Onizuka-sensei. It's nice to meet you, Mikumo-kun."
Ayane's blank expression turned into a frown at what she just heard. Mikumo held in a laugh.
'kun? Shouldn't the document say my gender on it as well? Well, whatever Ayane will tell him after.'
Mikumo nodded and greeted politely.
"It's nice to meet you as well, Onizuka-sensei."
The murmurs in the classroom got louder after hearing what Tooru said.
"Quiet, class. I'll be stepping out for a moment to discuss something important, but first, let me introduce you to a new student joining you today!"
Tooru then looked at Mikumo with a smile and nodded at her to introduce herself.
Mikumo looked around and was surprised to see a few familiar faces.
'Asuma Sarutobi, Kurenai Yuhi, Shizune Kato, Rin Nohara...and Obito Uchiha. Quite the line up.'
Mikumo flashed a bright smile and then bowed slightly.
"Nice to meet you, everyone. My name is Mikumo Kashima, although I joined a little late, I hope we can be friends."
Cheers erupted immediately after Mikumo finished her introduction.
"Kyaaa! Mikumo-kun, over here, come sit over here!"
A couple of the girls were excitedly beckoning Mikumo to come to sit next to them. The boys all gnawed their teeth, especially Obito.
"Alright! Try to keep it down. I'm stepping out now, Mikumo-kun, go ahead and find a place to sit. Once I return we'll begin our lesson for today."
Tooru turned to Ayane to see a scowl on her face, he suddenly scratched his head as he didn't know what the problem was. Ayane walked outside the classroom with Tooru following her and closing the door behind them.
As soon as the door closed, the room erupted with yells once again.
"Mikumo-kun! Over here, I have an empty seat!"
"No! You already have Asuma next to you, what are you greeding for?"
"Haa!? You got a problem with it?"
Asuma was slightly annoyed at the yelling and slid away from the girls' bickering, he kept his gaze focused on Kurenai, who was also eyeing Mikumo with some interest.
Mikumo scanned the room and saw that there was a seat open next to Kurenai, who was watching him silently sitting in the middle row, so she approached her with a bright smile.
"Hi there, do you mind if I sit here?"
Kurenai blushed a little bit seeing Mikumo's handsome appearance.
"Oh...yes! I don't mind."
Mikumo nodded and sat down to the dismay of the other girls. As soon as she sat down, Mikumo could feel the cold glare of someone from behind her but she ignored it.
"As you know, my name is Mikumo, what's yours?"
"Kurenai, Kurenai Yuhi."
Mikumo nodded brightly.
'Some of the people in this room will become great allies of mine, especially Kurenai, whose father I will be learning from in the future. It's best I try to get along with them as much as possible.'
"It's very nice to meet you, Kurenai-chan. I hope we can get along!"
Kurenai blushed and looked down at her hands.
"Ah, yes. Me too."
It was at this point that Mikumo heard someone slam their hand on a desk behind her.
"Huh?"
Everyone was startled by the sound and looked behind to see Asuma's scowling face.
Asuma stood up and walked over next to Mikumo.
Mikumo was amused because she knew what was going on.
"Can I help you?"
Asuma frowned deeply upon seeing Mikumo up close.
"Hmph, you think you can be cocky just because you got a nice face? Well listen here, my name is Asuma Sarutobi, and I challenge you!"
Mikumo could barely hold in her laugh but she did it anyway.
"I see, but why? I don't think I was acting particularly cocky at all."
Asuma was a little embarrassed as he couldn't come up with a good counter-argument, so it upset him even more.
"Hmph! What reason do you need to accept a duel man-to-man? If you win, I'll be your underling and call you big brother! How about that!?"
"Yeah, beat him up, Asuma!"
"Obito! Stop that!"
"Ah, sorry Rin, it was just a joke, ahaha..."
Mikumo heard Obito cheering Asuma on and couldn't answer as she could barely contain her laughter anymore.
A voice came from behind to reprimand Asuma.
"Asuma-kun, don't be unreasonable. Mikumo-kun, you don't have to accept his challenge, Asuma is the son of Sandaime-sama, he's already had ninja training!"
Mikumo turned to see who it was that was standing up for her and was surprised to see it was Shizune.
Asuma turned and yelled at Shizune.
"Stay out of this, Shizune, this is the concern between us men, what do you understand?"
Asuma then turned back and slammed his hand in front of Mikumo's desk.
"So, do you accept? Or are you a coward? Gonna run and cry to your mom, little boy?"
Before Mikumo was amused by she was a little annoyed now.
'Having a child call me little boy when I'm already mentally an adult is quite upsetting, but as an adult, I shouldn't be provoked by this. However, this is a good opportunity for me to stand out to the village and especially Hiruzen.'
Mikumo felt a tug on her hakama and turned to see Kurenai.
"Mikumo-kun...Shizune is right, you shouldn't do this."
Asuma was further enraged now, if he wasn't already before, now he's reached his final form.
"WELL? Are you going to accept or not!?"
Asuma gnashed his teeth as he yelled.
Mikumo chuckled and then nodded her head.
"Yes, that's fine. I accept your challenge, only one thing, you don't have to call me big brother if I win."
Asuma finally calmed down, thinking he's already won.
"Hmph, we'll see how long you can keep your confidence up against me, today is combat drills, so you're out of luck! Also, I keep my word, if you win, I'll be willing to call you big boss for life!"
Mikumo chuckled lightly with a mischievous smile and reached out her hand.
"Shake on it?"
Asuma grabbed Mikumo's hand firmly with a smirk on his face.
"The deal is settled. Don't run come later this afternoon."
"I won't."
"Hmph."
Asuma turned and went back to his seat.
Mikumo felt another tug to see it's Kurenai again.
"Mikumo-kun, are you really sure about this? Asuma-kun's already had ninja training. Are you from a ninja clan too?"
Mikumo shook her head and displayed a bright smile regardless.
"No, I come from a civilian family, but don't worry, Kurenai-chan. I have my tricks."
Kurenai nodded unconvinced by Mikumo but she didn't say more.
Soon, the room settled down and the surrounding kids started to ask Mikumo random questions. Mikumo answered them casually just to make small talk.
After a short while, Tooru came back into the room with an embarrassed look on his face.
"Okay! Settle down, class. We're starting soon."
Tooru then looked at Mikumo with an apologetic look.
"Ah, Mikumo-kun, err...Mikumo-chan. Sorry, I didn't know you were a girl, my bad."
"That's okay, Onizuka-sensei. It's a common mistake."
Mikumo said with a soft smile.
The room suddenly turned so quiet you could hear a pin drop.
"WHAAAAAT!?"
Everyone screamed in surprise, even Kurenai who was previously just quietly sitting couldn't help but display a shocked expression.
Mikumo turned around to look at her target, Asuma, who yelled the loudest out of the entire crowd.
Mikumo gave him a wink, while Asuma remained absolutely flabbergasted.
Satisfied with getting the reaction she wanted, she turned back to face the front of the class as Tooru started writing on the board.
"Okay class, yes, that's enough. We're starting now."
Mikumo cupped her face satisfyingly and then turned to look at Kurenai, who still had a shocked look on her face. She gave her a wink as well.
Kurenai chuckled slightly and then turned to face the front of the class.
'Ah, it's almost sinful how handsome I am. Life is good.'

A/N: If you're wondering why Obito and Rin are here but Kakashi isn't, it's because I plan to have Kakashi join next year to the same class. The timeline resource I'm using has Kakashi joining in the year 56 and we're in the year 55. This might be an error but it's the most extensive timeline I found so I'm using it to help my writing.
