Chương 8: Chapter 8 - Getting basic qualification, exploring Beacon and a change

The Beacon academy was massive, it housed number of huge dormitories and had cafeterias scattered throughout the campus.

If not for the sky-piercing tower that acted as a 'Beacon' new students would be easily lost.

Even before the first Semester started, thousands of young people were littered across the school grounds.

The exploration would have to wait though as he had to take few pre-preliminary exams. Neo already had the qualifications thanks to the shining academy that was situated in Vale.

She had incorporated dancing and combat together and her combat style had been almost fully developed.

Nephrite on the other hand was planning to dump a few skill points to some skills he got like weapon mastery before grinding them out.

He also had another goal in mind and a reason why he didn't just fake his transcripts or something like that.

He wanted to see the standard that the academy had in person. After finding out that there weren't only 'combat' huntsmen and huntresses. He had to scout a bit as getting inside Beacon information was surprisingly hard.

There were multiple sectors created that would ensure humanity's survival. Of course the most popular combat sector but there were others as well.

A medical sector for huntresses and huntsmen that have healing semblances or want to become combat medics.

Another sector specialized in hunting criminal huntsmen/huntresses, bandits and others like them. It was the least populated sector but also a very important one.

It is usually attended by people that lost their family members or close ones because of a criminal. It was basically a justice delivering sector, one of the reasons why Vale was free of all bandits in area.

They were simply exterminated...

But there is a catch. Nephrite had been quietly digging throughout the years to understand the entire situation. After all his current goal was to prevent the fall of Beacon.

And once he succeeds he needs to know what kind of dangers would lurk nearby and threaten him. And while he was quietly lurking around, learning things that even Neo did not know about he came across an interesting fact.

Deeply hidden secret and a reason why Ozpin's position is quite unshakable. The nicknamed 'Justice' sector fell under the jurisdiction of Ozpin's. Not Vale's or the Academy but him and him alone.

He was quite curious as to what exactly happens in there as the students that enrolled there are rarely seen before graduation and every graduating student could easily match top students from the combat sector.

Another weird thing was that no graduate from the Justice sector ever became a criminal. Until their very end they were always loyal to Ozpin and stood on the side of Justice.

Ozpin's preparations ran deep maybe even deeper than Salem could ever fathom. But that could apply both ways.

The realisation that there wasn't just Cinder and those like Tyrian stressed Nephrite. Period of peace was over and he knew that blood will fill the air in the next few years...

...

The basic qualification was based around points and was divided into multiple sections. The first was the ability assessment there, people show their strengths and weaknesses like speed or power so the Academy can teach them accordingly.

The second was the Academic one and was the one that clearly separated the three sectors.

The Combat and Medical sector both took this qualification test. Basically an entrance exam. The Justice sector did not need to take this one and skipped right to the third.

The third was combat related and the Medical sector could choose if they want to attend or not.

Students are required to fight either 1 Ursa within a selected time period or fight 6 Beowolves at once without a real time limit.

The academic and combat qualification sections were also the reason as to why there weren't hundreds of thousands of students.

And Nephrite took one too, with Neo as a cheerleader. A silent one but one nonetheless.

The first ability assessment went well for him. He wasn't the strongest nor was he the fastest but he excelled at every physical exam.

The Physique stat didn't just give him strength but it gave him an overall power boost. Strength, speed and resilience.

Vitality on the other hand was the energy generator for the body. If he gave it enough stat points he could be a battlefield made weapon.

He was as fast as Neo if she didn't combine it with her semblance. But he was also stronger and durable than she was.

The second one was even more of a breeze for him than the first one. After all he wouldn't be a teacher if he didn't know anything.

He could even compete with Dr Oobleck for an amount of time. At least he was confident in being able to do so.

The third however was more complicated than both of the previous ones combined.

...

'I am seriously going to do this...' Thought Nephrite as his palms sweated a bit. His first actual fight with Aura against the creatures of 'evil'.

He chose to fight the Beowolves as he didn't know how long would it take him to take out an Ursa.

What he was confident in was his Aura and sixth sense. Before he had even gotten this skill he was training with Neo blindfolded.

Nephrite had improved a bit slowly but Neo on the other hand was riding a rocket. Thanks to his Teacher job and a hired help of some ex-huntsmen he had provided Neo with the ability to fight whilst blind.

It wasn't perfect but she was be able to beat normal shining academy students.

With the general experience and skills he gained he shook off his nervousness.

He stood in a walled arena and gates across from him had opened. A pack of vicious black beasts had emerged.

*ROAAAAAAAR

The one seemingly in the charge of the pack roared and they began moving. For this fight he was given equipment provided by Beacon.

They were top quality but weren't on the level of 'custom-made' yet. He had chosen a pistol and a one handed sword for this fight.

*Pew *Pew *Pew *Pew

He emptied a whole magazine quickly before reloading. The sounds of bullets hitting the flesh and walls soon followed after.

His shots successfully killed one and injured two Beowolves.

'5 more to go...' He counted as he dashed towards the nearest Beowolf.

*Swish

He performed a wide swing and seriously injured a Beowolf. It got up though and swiped Nephrite with it's claws. Subconsciously using his sixth-sense, Nephrite jumped in the air to avoid the strike.

Another Beowolf took the opportunity and jumped at his blind spot.

*Pew *Pew

Two gunshots sounded in retaliation as Nephrite performed a mid air spin and quickly landed.

'4 left...' Nephrite emptied the rest of his magazine and killed the seriously wounded Beowolf.

'3'

Seeing it's leader die the slightly injured Beowolf roared at charged at Nephrite.

*Swoosh

He thrusted his sword at the charging beowolf's head quickly ending it before instantly turning around to see another one right next to him.

Ducking and using the force of his lower legs he sprung back up and severed it's head and arm.

'1' He thought. His body was untouched and yet he felt drained from the amount of adrenaline he just experienced.

'Gotta get used to this fast.' He admonished himself as he emptied his last magazine and thus ending the fight.

...

Neo and Nephrite were walking across the Beacon campus. Nephrite had successfully passed the combat part and was waiting for his overall results.

It had been an hour since he finished and they had just left a cafeteria after eating some food.

Even if he could cook better and had his tasting skill the food tasted a bit better than it usually would.

"Neo what do you want to see first the dorms, gardens, training areas or classrooms?" He asked looking at the layout of Beacon.

Neo looked at him and lifted her two fingers.

"Two it is then..." He mumbled as they went on their little adventure.

It took them solid 20 minutes of speed walking before they got there. The garden section itself was massive.

It had been created for the students to relax after their missions and had slowly expanded. Now it has basically turned into a park.

Some older students and their teams were sitting on the grass having picnic and playing games.

Some were trimming parts of the Garden and some were just sleeping and laying around.

As the walked deeper the roads started to split and intersect a few times before they arrived before a huge maze.

Sadly they were stopped by an older student before they could even step in.

"I wouldn't be going there if I were you. The school administration uses that place as one of the final exams before graduation and entry is always monitored with cameras."

Nephrite thanked him and they decided to walk further in. He had gained a lot just by seeing the huge garden. Even he didn't know that Beacon had a maze where students took their final exams.

The further they walked the more secluded it was and couples started to appear. Relationships weren't prohibited as Beacon staff believed that it would bring the team or teams more closer to each other.

If a fallout happens it is easily noticed and Beacon has multiple consultants that are trained to calm them down. Maybe they won't be friends anymore but any hostility would be usually eliminated.

After 2 minutes of walking they had arrived at a beautiful spot that was marked on the map as a 'Mystical bond pond'.

A special place at night that had created many couples throughout it's existence. During the day it was a place filled with people just having fun.

Swimming in the water wasn't prohibited and people liked to cool down here when the day was hot.

Although Aura eliminated the feeling of being too hot the feeling of the Sun's beams was still there.

Walking around they had soon found an oddly deserted place but didn't care and as they approached it a senior huntress student approached them.

"Don't go there, the emotionless champion is sitting there lest you want to fight."

"What the hell are you talking about?" Nephrite asked baffled.

"Oh? You don't know about the legendary Mistral champion?"

'It couldn't be...'

"Apparently she had killed her first human when a burglar had broken in her house at 10 years old. She then started to train and unlocked her aura before she started fighting in every combat event. As she won more and more people noticed how she tried to smile when talking to others. At first it was nothing but...

It was during that time that people learned how she killed when she was 10 years old. She never defended herself and always wore a fake smile and people got paranoid.

At first no one had believed it but when she arrived at Beacon a pretty prideful second year student had challenged her and she brutally destroyed him. He was top 5 in his class for Oum's sake! He couldn't even counterattack the whole time, it was as if she had him on a leash. Now people stay away from her lest she attacks them." The senior shivered as she finished.

"Is she by any chance called Pyrrha Nikos?" He asked, shook at the fact that something substantial had changed in the story.

"Yeah, that's her name." The senior nodded and walked away rather quickly.

Beacon's size and sectors weren't a surprise to him as the Academy itself was never fully explored and the library was too big for like 500 students across 4 years.

But this was different, something that would change the whole dynamic if handled incorrectly.

"Let's go Neo, I don't think she is a bad person and there isn't room anywhere else anyways." Neo nodded not caring as much.

After all she had her pride after becoming the absolute number one of the shining academy.

They sat down next to the so called 'Emotionless Champion'. She had red hair with a waist-level ponytail. Even when sitting it was clear that she was tall. She wasn't wearing her combat outfit but a simple red one piece dress. It slightly resembled the one she wore during the dance party in canon RWBY.

"Hey can we sit here with you?" Nephrite asked. She seemed to be in a daze before they came up to her.

"Ah Sorry." She said with a forced smile. "Of course you can." She continued.

Nephrite just smiled in response and he and Neo sat down. He pulled bunch of snacks out of thin air surprising Pyrrha.

"Cool magic trick huh? It's my semblance, want some?" He said as he opened a bag of roasted peanuts.

Pyrrha absent-mindedly nodded and extended her hand.

"Thank you m-"

"Nephrite Antaeus pleasure to meet you. This is Neo Antaeus, she can't speak much but she is a kind soul. You?" Nephrite cut her off and introduced himself.

"Ah, I am Pyrrha Nikos nice to meet you." Her hand went stiff for a second as she said her name but then relaxed when Neo and Nephrite did not react to it.

"Sooo do you like potato fries thin or on the thicker side?" Nephrite suddenly asked out of the blue, seriously as if he was a lawyer about to have a tough case.

"Thin fries?" The out of nowhere question threw her off.

"Good choice! Here you can have these." Another bag of peanuts had appeared in his hand and he threw it to her.

"Thanks.... Can I ask you a question?"

"Sure you can, go ahead."

"Do you not care about the rumours?"

"What rumours? Are there already rumours about my handsomeness? Or are you talking about those lies?" He confidently replied and looked straight into her eyes. The moment they started talking he knew that it was the Pyrrha he knew.

Pyrrha genuinely smiled and chuckled. "No, it's nothing don't mind me."

Nephrite then took out a blanket, cups, ice cubes and some orange flavoured soda. Time quickly passed as he talked to Neo and occasionally talked to Pyrrha before she eventually joined the conversation too.

"Well, we have to go it's getting late I'll see you at the Beacon welcoming ceremony!" Nephrite bid Pyrrha a goodbye as she lived in a temporary dorm at Beacon.

"Goodbye, I'll see you there!" Pyrrha bid them a goodbye too as Neo just waved.

'I need to investigate properly...' Nephrite seriously thought. In the canon Weiss took Pyrrha as her idol so this sort of accident should not have happened.

It wasn't the only oddity as Summer had disappeared much later on too but this one was too glaring.

Tomorrow is the day where heroines and heroes gather. A day when everything will become a bit clearer.
