95% HP: The Book of the Wise / Chapter 19: Ollivander Wandlore

Chương 19: Ollivander Wandlore

"The reason the supreme cores are named such is because they can be paired with all wood types. The synergy they possess is by far the most superior that I have ever seen." Garrick said. "However, there are many materials that I have never used, which means that there can be additions to the supreme cores in the future."

"But for now… these are the ones, huh?" Ian mumbled, going through the list of items. "But when will I be getting my wand?"

Garrick laughed at the question. 'In the end, he is still a child.'

'It is not possible to create a wand on my own just yet. The wand that I want to make will be a project for the future and I know it will require countless expensive resources and time, which I do not have now.' Ian sighed internally. 'It's best to work with whatever I get for the time being.'

"It will be soon." Garrick said. "After I teach you a bit about the Ollivander's Wandlore, I will see which wand suits you the best. Do keep in mind though, before you are at the wizarding school, you are not allowed to use it outside of the house. Even that will be heavily restricted as most of the early spells will be prohibited."

Ian nodded, while it was sad, he knew it was not allowed for wizards as young as him to run around with offensive spells.

'Doesn't mean that one cannot learn about them… They just cannot have actual practice.' Ian shook his head. 'Which is risky in its own way. Children with theoretical knowledge about such spells might try to use them immediately after the restrictions are lifted. But that means, they might harm both themselves and the ones around them due to the lack of practice and guidance.' Ian frowned. 'The current law isn't bad but it is highly ineffective.'

After all, a wizard can always use an unregistered wand and the council wouldn't be able to trace it.

Wands were like guns, the authorities can easily track a killer if a person is killed using a registered gun but it is not the case for unregistered ones.

"Now, where were we?" Garrick asked.

"Carving a wand to fit the core."

Garrick nodded at Ian's answer. "Ah, you are right."

As he picked up a small piece of wood, he smiled. "Now, do you have any idea how we can carve this piece to fit a core?"

This was something that Ian wondered about for a very long time. Cores were quite unique, each having a different shape and size. Some were tough and some were malleable, some were small and some were big.

But cores were never cut smaller to fit the wand, they were left untempered. Which meant that it was the wood that had to be modified.

"The wood is cut according to the core, which means sometimes the cuts are small and sometimes big."

Garrick grinned at the answer. "Indeed."

'But that means not every part of a mythical creature can be used to make a core. Some parts are way too big to fit inside the wand.'

"This is exactly why things like dragon heartstrings are used instead of a dragon claw or dragon tongue. " Garrick explained. "So, we either use something small like a hair strand or something that can fit in small and thin places like a feather."

Garrick hummed and pointed at the materials.

"These are not real magical materials, they are just for demonstration." He said and picked up a small knife. "Now, if it is something like a hair strand or a feather, we usually make thin but long cuts along the length of the wand."

Saying this, he made a deep but thin cut along the length of the wood.

"There are many steps in between and after." Garrick explained. "Like spells to keep the core safe and also spells that make sure that the magic doesn't leak out."

Saying this he skillfully placed the feather inside the cut.

"Things like feathers that can be squeezed and do not necessarily get harmed, can be made to fit inside small cuts. So, we use items like a phoenix feather." Garrick continued his explanation.

"But if it is a small solid, we usually put it at the bottom part of the wand or near the handle. This is done to avoid making the top heavier and to make sure that the core is safe in case a spell lands at the tip of the wand."

"How is the cut sealed?" Ian questioned.

"We keep the piece that we cut out and after placing the core inside, the cut is sealed by refitting the wood piece. And multiple spells can be used to get the wood back to its former glory while erasing any signs of cut." Garrick smiled. "If it's a thin cut, just a spell is enough to close it."

This was something that was crucial. Knowledge of how cores were made to fit inside wands was important and while he knew that the spells of restoration would be taught later, the knowledge he got today was very important.

"I will be teaching you about wandmaking little by little, and by the time you join a school… You will have enough knowledge to pursue the topic on your own."

This was all he needed, as wandmaking was a very interesting topic.

'After all, I do want to create a wand for myself when I am at school.'

`There have been many great wizards in the world. Many capable of destroying cities on their own, many capable of defeating dragons and many that could control the weather and climate of any place.`

Ian knew that wizards were strong but for one to be able to control climate, that was interesting.

`But despite them possessing countless powerful spells and capable of up-turning battles, the greatest wizards were those that controlled the tides of war while sitting inside their houses.`

The words changed.

`This was done through the power of the mind.`

<Progress: 0%>

He wasn't surprised, unlike with Occlumency, he had never once tried Legilimency. So that zero percent progress didn't surprise him.

<Quest Completion Reward: Hermes Trismegistus's Guide to Alchemy>

Ian paused at the reward. He didn't really know much about alchemy but he felt like he had heard of the name before.

'Who is this guy? Why does his name sound familiar?'

Shaking his head, he went back to reading about Legilimency.

'I will look into it later, for now… let's focus on the quest.'
