Chương 19: I Liked You
"Si Mu. . . Why did you propose to me eight years ago?"
He looked over at her, thought about it, and then looked back out the window, "I liked you," he answered simply.
Xu Anyi's heart clenched up when she heard the past tense in his words, but as she moved her eyes back onto herself, she realized that she had nothing to her anymore.
Her old status was gone, her family, her wealth, her power, her figure, her beauty, her. . . But all of that, she was going to get back.

They returned home and as they entered the room, Si Mu put the marriage certificate onto the dining table and removed his jacket, rolling up his sleeves as he walked into the kitchen, which was connected to the dining room, "What do you want to eat?"
"You can cook?!" She exclaimed in surprise, and he turned around, looking at her as he washed his hands at the sink.
"Can you?"
Xu Anyi shook her head. Raised in her family, she never needed to cook, and it was probably the same for him, so she was shocked that he could cook.
He took out some ingredients from the fridge and began cooking, and with nothing else to do, Xu Anyi stayed in the kitchen and watched him closely.
He seemed very experienced as he skillfully chopped the ingredients and prepared everything without a second thought.
Xu Anyi leaned against the counter, watching him as he marinated the meat with his fingers. As he mixed the fragrant sauce in the bowl, his fingers suddenly paused as the dark sauce dripped from his hand, "Can you get the apron? It's over in that cabinet."
Xu Anyi jumped up right away and pulled open the cabinet he was looking towards and found several black aprons folded up inside. She pulled one out and walked over to him, holding it out.
He looked at the apron and then at her, not taking it from her. Xu Anyi stretched her arm out further, looking at him confusedly.
Si Mu continued to look at her, and he lifted his hands up slightly. Only when Xu Anyi saw the sauce dripping from his hands did she realize what he meant, and her mouth fell open in realization as she unfolded the apron.
Si Mu turned to face her cooperatively, and she held the apron up to place it over his head. He really was tall, and Xu Anyi had to stand on her toes to get it through his head, but as she got onto her toes, he bent down, leaning his head forward to make it easier for her.
In that split second, their faces were unbelievably close as their eyes locked and Xu Anyi's hands froze in midair. She held her breath as she quickly dropped the apron over his head and fell back a few steps, almost tripping on the slippery kitchen floor.
He reached his arm out and swiftly grabbed onto her waist, making sure his fingers did not touch her. She gasped as she grabbed onto his arm, trying to find her balance.
His strong arm pulled her in slightly and their bodies pressed against each other, her head bumping against his wide chest. She sucked in a breath as she found her balance, planting her bare feet firmly onto the floor as she moved back.
He noticed the surprise and hint of fear on her face and he frowned as he stiffly pulled his arm back, looking at her before he began to cook again.
Xu Anyi stood there, not sure of what to do until he ordered, "Help me tie the apron."
She nodded and moved behind him, carefully grabbing onto the two strings as she tied it into a neat bow.
Then, she moved to the side again.
After a few seconds of standing there, Si Mu looked at her, "Go wait outside. The food will be ready in a few minutes."
"Oh. . . Okay." Then, she left the kitchen and sat in the dining room, watching him from there.
After a while, the food was ready and she helped set the table as the two of them sat down to eat. The food was just as delicious as it looked, and Xu Anyi ate a lot even though she wasn't very hungry from breakfast.
When they had both finished, she jumped up, grabbing onto the plate, "I'll clean the dishes."
He had cooked, so it only made sense for her to contribute too, and she was very experienced at washing dishes by now.
However, seeing this, he stood up as well and grabbed onto her hand, stopping her, "No need. There will be someone to do this. Just leave it here."
Then, he grabbed his jacket and the little red booklet on the table, "I'm going to go do some work in my office," and he left.
Xu Anyi looked at the plates on the table and finally decided to leave them there. Then, with nothing else to do, she looked around the large house.
It was not enormous, but it was still huge for one person to live in. There were several rooms but they were all locked and or were empty inside.
After she had figured out where everything was in the house, she found her way back to her room and went in, closing the door.

Si Mu shut the door after entering his private office on the second floor, and he walked over to the large desk in the front of the room, sitting down on the large black chair.
He hung his jacket over the chair and then looked at the thing he was holding in his other hand. It was the marriage certificate.
He held it up with both hands, slowly opening it to the picture. He had not taken a look at it yet.
When he saw the small image, a barely noticeable smile immediately appeared on his face, but his eyes clearly softened as he stared at it for a very long time.
He did not know how long he looked at it, examining every little detail, and he only broke out of his daze when he heard footsteps coming from outside.
He looked at the image one last time before carefully closing the book, folding it neatly before putting it away into the safe at the bottom of his desk.
