Faun felt like he couldn't breathe on the plane, it wasn't air sickness or a phobia of heights, it just felt like his oxygen thinned the further he got away from Declan.
Allan had kept to his words and gotten him on a plane and although Faun had gotten what he always wanted, he had a difficult time being happy about it.
He brushed his fingertips over the empty column of his neck, he felt lighter without the choker but he had kind of gotten used to the weight. Although Allan had told him to get rid of it, he had shoved it down his pocket, unwillingly to part with the last thing Declan had given him.
He probably sounded delusional with thoughts like that but his heart was actively breaking, he deserved to be a little bit delusional.
He would call Isla and Lou when the plane landed because he had no idea how to get anywhere and although Allan had handed him a bunch of money, he didn't know how to use it to get to where he needed to be.
Faun didn't plan to but he ended up dozing off on the flight, waking up when the air hostess came around asking if anyone needed assistance. It was a small plane and was surprisingly filled by only humans although it was leaving the North, Allan must have arranged it this way because there was no way he could have gotten on a plane with a werewolf also on it.
He easily blended into the crowd, most of the others in their own bubbles, some sleeping, some reading. It was nice to not always be on guard but he still had a difficult time enjoying the flight.
Faun ate a bland meal on the plane and fell asleep once more, for longer this time, waking up when the plane touched down. It was already late in the afternoon, the sky beginning to take on a reddish hue.
As soon as the passengers exited the plane, they all diverged in different directions. A handful had people picking them up while the others found their way. Only Faun slowly walked up to a bench to sit down, he would be waiting for a bit after all.
He brought out his phone and called up Isla again who picked on the first ring like she had been sitting stiffly staring at her phone and waiting for his call.
"Faun! Hii! I didn't know if I should call, I'm so happy you're still alive!" She said in a rush.
Her familiar voice and her blatant excitement seeped into Faun, making his tense muscles relax, a faint smile on his face. "I'm sorry I took so long to call," He started quietly, "And if it's no trouble, could you come pick me up from the airport?"
"You're in Oakwood?!" Isla asked with barely controlled excitement.
"Ye-"
"I'll be right there!" Isla interrupted him before he could get all his words out, hanging up.
Faun stared at his phone with a smile, slipping it into his pocket as he settled in to wait for Isla to show up. It was tempting to stay with Isla and Lou instead of returning to the woods, it was really tempting. He really hated being lonely.
He couldn't stay though because Declan would come for him and he didn't want that. It was best that he just disappeared into the woods where he came from. He would travel through forests and sparsely populated fields like he had done all his life.
Isla must have broken several traffic regulations by the time she arrived because she was there in no time.
He saw her the moment his phone started to ring again, she was dressed in a knit turtleneck dress with high boots, her blonde hair waving in the wind and she was just entering the waiting room.
Faun got to his feet without picking up, he didn't have even a single piece of luggage because he left everything behind. He had intended to surprise Isla but she caught sight of him before he could get close enough sending her into a dead run as she charged at him.
"Faun!!" She whisper-yelled, having enough self-awareness to realize that she probably shouldn't scream in a quiet airport waiting room. "I'm so happy to see you."
Faun let her squeeze his breath out of him, needing physical contact after being starved of it. "Not as happy as I am."
Isla didn't mention his suspicious lack of luggage and she didn't mention Declan either. Well aware of the strange conditions they had left Oakwood in, she knew it was best to remain quiet about it until Faun wanted to talk.
"Lou is closing up her store early to see you, you'll eat dinner with us, won't you?" Isla rambled as she led the way to her car.
"Yeah, and I'll sleep over, if that's fine?" He posed as a question, getting into the passenger side after Isla helped him open the door.
"Like you even have to ask," Isla beamed, getting in the driver's seat.
Isla was always cheery and a little extra but right now, even Faun could tell that she was forcing it, and it wasn't difficult to see why. His green eyes were vacant and his voice had lost all its luster, he could only be grateful to her for making the effort.
As they drove into the sunset, an upbeat pop playlist playing in the background, Faun spoke up quietly. "I'll be leaving tomorrow, and if Declan calls to ask about me, could you not tell him I came here?"
Isla had been about to launch into a detailed explanation of how the weeks without Faun had gone, anything to fill up the space but now words failed her. "If… If that's what you want." She replied and then forced a smile. "You're always welcome back anytime!"
Faun leaned his head against the window and sucked in a deep breath, and said in a soft voice. "I know."
