Chương 19: in search of immortality
"Alex, you used a bad word, hehehe," giggled Emily on the side.
"Sorry, I lost control," said Alex and looked at the old mermaid in front of him, "can you tell me where I can find your assistant?"
"You can find him in a lake on top of that mountain but be careful; there are a lot of monsters on your way to the top." Said the mermaid, pointing to a mountain not far from them.
"sure there are," Alex grumbled and left with Emily.
They ran the whole way to the mountain.
When they climbed about two meters up the mountain, a shadow attacked Alex out of nowhere.
Alex was fast and used his hand as a shield, but the next instant, he felt a stinging pain in his arm; when he looked more closely, he saw a red wolf with fangs as big as daggers.
"aaaw," Emily jumped up from where she stood and started punching the wolf, "let my brother gooooo,"
Although Emily was still a child, her stats were so high that every punch the wolf took was like being hit with a hammer.
Alex swiftly summoned his sword and stabbed the wolf while it was busy biting him.

"level 13 crimson wolf has been killed."
"calculating the rewards."
"1000 INBs have been added to your account."
"you are the first in history to kill a crimson wolf."
"100,000 INBs have been added to your account."
A series of notifications came into Alex's view, and he got a bunch of INBs as a reward, but as always, there weren't any dropped items yet.
Alex sighed and looked at the worried Emily, "don't worry, Emy, it's nothing; plus, we have your healing skill."
At the mention of healing skill, Emily raised her hand and said hurriedly, "healing hand, a healing hand, healing hand…."
She was about to chant for the sixth time, but Alex stopped her, "it's already healed, Emy, don't waste your mana; we will need it went we get to the top."
"o-ok, I didn't think of that, sorry."
"it's ok. Let's rest and eat something for a bit; I lost quite a bit of stamina."
After finding a good hiding spot, they both sat down and started eating some snacks they had brought with them just in case.
In less than two hours, Alex and Emily's stamina and mana were replenished to their full, so they got up and started climbing again.
Not long after, they were attacked again, but this time Alex was ready. He wasn't the kind of guy to be bitten twice from the same hole.
This time though, Alex didn't finish the wolf too fast. Instead, he tried to guide the wolf to Emily, "Emy, use your dark blast while it's still busy fighting me."
Emily hesitated for a second, fearing that she might hit Alex instead of the wolf.
When Alex saw this, he positioned himself so that the wolf would be placed between himself and Emily.
As soon as Emily saw the opportunity, she raised her hand and shouted, "dark blast."
A dark ball shot out of her hand and hit the wolf right in the back. The wolf howled in pain and turned around to attack Emily, but Alex was faster and chopped off its head.
"Excellent job; next time, try to shoot while I'm fighting it so that your aim could improve. You don't need to worry about me; your dark blast is still too slow to hit me."
Emily nodded her head and said nothing. She was clearly still worried that she might hurt Alex.
Alex looked at her but didn't push harder. He turned around and started climbing again.
On their way to the top, they were attacked more than forty times, and each time, it seemed like the wolves were getting stronger and stronger.
Three hours later, they finally reached the top of the mountain. The top of the mountain was like that of a volcano, and Alex and Emily had to climb down for about four to five meters to reach the lake.
Alex and Emily looked at the beautiful calm lake and stood there for a moment to enjoy the beautiful scenery in front of them.
"What now?" asked Emily.
"I guess we try to bring the bad guy out." Said Alex and started throwing big rocks into the lake.
The racks were so big that big waves started to form on the lake's surface.
It didn't take long for the "owner" of the lake to come out with an angry face.
"Who dares disturb my research?" said a deep voice from within the lake.
"I'm here to retrieve what you stole from your master; either give it to me peacefully, or I will take it by force,"
The voice didn't say anything for a few seconds before it started laughing as hard as it could.
The mountain started to shake under Alex and Emily's feet, and the lake began to gather at one point.
'was this all a hologram???' Alex was astonished at the scene in front of him. He didn't expect the system to be able to generate such a massive hologram with such accuracy and detail.
Even when Alex threw real rocks in the lake, the reaction of the water was so realistic that Alex didn't even doubt for a second that it was real.
The lake lost all its water and, in its place, stood a huge, four-meter giant made of water.
"Can you repeat what you just said?" said the water giant in front of him.
Alex's mind went blank. He knew that an S-grade quest couldn't be easy, but he never expected it to be this hard.
'does the system really expect me to defeat this?' thought Alex in desperation, then he regained his calm and thought, 'no, there must be another way; the system never gives impossible missions.'
After some thinking, something clicked in Alex's mind, 'didn't the mermaid say that she was deceived into drinking the potion? Then maybe….'
"oh great, sir, what I said was only to bring you out so that I could offer you a great opportunity," Alex's tone turned a hundred and eighty degrees.
The giant looked at Alex with suspension and said, "what is this offer you talk about?"
"as I have heard, you want to concoct the immortality potion, but you can't. I know the reason why you failed all this time."
The giant's interest peaked as he bent down and brought his face near Alex's face, "and why is that?"
"it's because you are short of one important ingredient." Said Alex.
As if being enlightened, the giant's face became excited and looked at Alex like he was looking at a treasure, "what is the last ingredient? Tell me, tell me right now."
"Before I tell you, I need insurance that you will not hurt my sister or me; how can I be sure of that?"
"what do you propose?" said the giant.
"I want you to sign a contract with me that states that you will die if you hurt my sister or me."
