Chương 9: Chapter 9
"Hey guys, I found a spot there near those guys!"
Following the direction where he's pointing, she increases the size of his sight and observes the four guys talking animatedly with one another. They approach and it's when they're near that they can hear bits and pieces of their conversation.
"What a freak, right?"
"Yeah, have you seen those eyebrows?"
"And not to mention, those stupid clothes."
"Is he wearing a onesie? How does he even pee wearing that?"
Obito's faint smile disappears as he hears what they are saying. Rin goes quiet, too. Souma, instead? She's a bit mad, she would be madder if…
"Obito, is Gai near?" At his confused sound, she adds, "The guy they're talking about. Is he near?"
"Ah. Yeah." She can hear the grimace in his voice.
"Lead me to him."
"Uh. Sure?"
He leads them to a spot near the place where those kids were talking. Actually, it is two trees away from them. They don't approach. Obito and Rin because they're unsure. Her, instead?
She's angry.
Gai was one of her favorite characters in Naruto because of his positive and hard-working attitude. He wasn't pretty like most of her favorites were, but unlike them, he was one of her role models. To hear them talk trash about him…
Well, she thinks as she uncaps her water pouch, they do deserve a lesson.
She forms a sphere of water and makes it move above their heads. Then lets it go. A simple prank, but she reminds herself that they're kids and kids can be really cruel when they want to.
Their exclamations of surprise and panic are music to her ears. She shrugs the matter off and moves to where she can sense Gai sitting, Rin and Obito walking behind her. The future's green beast of Konoha has clearly seen what has occurred because when they're near, he whispers, "What…"
She sits in front of him and stretches her hand in his direction. "Hi, I'm Yukihira Souma, but you can call me Souma. You're Might-kun, right?"
There's a silence for a couple of beats but then said boy nods. "Yes, I am! Though you can call me Gai, I don't mind!"
She smiles and waves Rin and Obito to sit. They do and introduce themselves to Gai. Then they ask her about what she did which she answers is a technique she recently learned.
The rest of lunchtime is spent with light chatting, mostly to get to know each other. Apparently, Obito met Rin inside the store her mother works in, helping an old lady to buy her groceries. Then they talked and realized they both were preparing for the Academy so they decided to help each other. Yuki instead talks about her powers, or at least what is known by Konoha. After all, high-ranking people know about it, why not her new friends?
Gai, strangely enough, mostly listens, though he does intervene from time to time to add a few words. His enthusiasm hasn't reached cannon levels but he's still a nice guy and he does get enthusiastic when talking about his dream of becoming a taijutsu specialist.
It's nice.
For the first time since he came here, he gets the time to relax. No training or light meditation. Not trying to check himself around his parents and slowly trying to change his personality into what he feels comfortable with, afraid of what they would say by discovering that from one moment to the next, he's changed—matured.
And yeah, her muscles are sore from the practice they did in the morning, and she does feel a bit tired, but for the first time in a long, long time, she feels happy.
They return once again to the classroom when lunch is over, promising to seat nearer tomorrow, ready for their next lessons.
It seems to be shaping up to be a good day.
It was a good decision to join the Academy, after all.

There's some weird one-sided competition going on between Kakashi and Gai. They're the first in each physical exercise and Gai has already declared Kakashi his eternal rival. The boy in question ignores him though. He's not a cold person from what he's seen. He's just… indifferent. From what he can see, he's already preparing to graduate early as he can see him talking to the teacher pretty frequently about advanced questions. He's heard from the teachers that they're thinking of advancing him up a grade and it's just a month after the Academy started.
And Obito? Well, he also is Kakashi's self-declared rival. The difference is that Gai manages to be able to catch up with Kakashi in the physical exercises, even if not with the theoretical ones; while Obito can't do either.
From what he understood, it's mostly Obito being annoyed at Kakashi's indifferent attitude. And the way Rin has developed a crush on him. Mostly the second reason.
"What do you see in him Rin, he's so cold with everyone!"
"My eternal rival's flames of youth manage to ignite everyone's flames easily, Obito-kun! Rin-san is only one of them!"
Well, he's right for the girls. Every one of them seems to have joined his fan club. He's lucky Rin is not a fangirl, she just has a puppy crush.
"Gai, don't go shouting that up!" she whisper-yells, her face covered by her hands. "Oh, no. He's right there. What if he heard?"
Yuki can't help but laugh.
