Chương 19: Chapter 18 - Classes

"Oh, we're with Ravenclaws again." said Tonks while playing with a feather. She was sitting next to Alder and Casper.

"I find them quite friendly after the potions class yesterday." said Casper.

"You're right about that. What the hell is their problem? They were also looking at me weirdly." said Tonks, annoyed.

"Most of them act according to their parents' and seniors' teachings. So I wouldn't worry about them. Besides, all of them can't be like that." said Alder calmly.

Tonks' eyebrows raised. "Are you defending them?"

"No. But you can't be like them either, having a prejudice against all of them would only divide us further."

"And why would I want to get along with any of them? Are there no one left in the school, or something?" said Tonks with confusion.

"Of course I am not asking you to be best friends with them but the wizarding world is not a safe place. You won't know who you will need to lean on someday." said Alder keeping his calm.

"Then you tell them that. If I see they're up to no good, I wouldn't just stand by when they're bullying us."

"I'm just telling you not to hate all of them. Of course if I see any malice, I would probably act before you guys." said Alder comfortingly which eased the tense atmosphere. Tonks and Casper also nodded seriously.

Alder grabbed a feather with his left hand and said "Here you go, maybe this will make you feel better.". Then he waved his wand with his right hand and muttered "Avifors".

The feather turned into a beautiful sparrow and at first struggled to get out of Alder's hand. Then stood still as if accepting the situation.

Tonks and Casper was watching this with awe. Tonks moved closer and looked into the bird's eyes. "It's beautiful." she said.

"Here, open your hands, take it." said Alder. Tonks took over the bird with her two hands and took a closer look. The bird on the other hand took the chance and bit her suddenly without any warning.

Her hair colour changed for a second to red and to brown immediately. She forgot her pain when she saw the bird flying out of her hands.

Then she started speaking hurriedly "Oh no, Alder. Sorry, I…".

"Don't worry, it's almost its time anyway." said Alder calmly with a smile. The free bird flew around the room for a few seconds and slowly turned back to a feather. This commotion alerted the other students and everyone's eyes were on the falling feather.

But the feather stopped its free fall and stopped. When it began to move again, it was already moving towards Alder. Everyone first checked curiously to Alder, then after seeing him looking somewhere they also followed his gaze.

"That was quite fascinating, Mr. Gray. If I remember right you didn't take your transfiguration class yet right?" asked Professor Flitwick smiling with excitement.

"Not yet, Professor. Do you know me?" asked Alder curiously.

"Well, of course. I try to learn everyone's name during the sorting ceremony. It was marvellous Mr. Gray. I would like to give you points but I will leave that to Professor McGonagall if you don't mind me sharing with her." said Flitwick with a smile.

Alder nodded and said "You know the best professor. May I ask if that was the Levitation Charm?".

Flitwick was pleasantly surprised and his smile got bigger. "You're partially right, Mr. Gray. That was a variation of the Levitation Charm, the Hover Charm. But you can also have the same affect with the Levitation Charm if you improve it enough. Five points to Hufflepuff. Now, let's begin today's topic, we'll learn Wand-Lighting Charm."

After telling the use of the spell, Professor Flitwick showed them the incantation and the wand movement.

Then it was their turn to try. But Alder was not sure if he would look like a show off, when he casted the spell on one try. He thought for a moment and decided to go along with it. It was not like his friends were on the dark. He told them about his summer while they were discussing about it.

"Lumos" said Alder slowly with a wave of his wand. The tip of his wand got illuminated immedietely.

"Wonderful, five points to Hufflepuff. Look everyone, Mr. Gray successfully casted the spell."

Although Alder got a few scornful look from Ravenclaws, Hufflepuffs were quite excited. Alder got them ten points in just one class.

Alder was in a good mood for the whole afternoon. But the class he really looked forward was approaching slowly.

As soon as Tonks and Alder entered the classroom, a red haired boy started waving at them. They smiled and walked towards the boy.

"It feels like it's been a long time, Charlie." said Alder.

"It's been just three days." Charlie laughed. "I saw some people from your house at the Quidditch stadium on Sunday, but failed to see you guys.

"Don't mind Alder, if you want to see him you should check the library." said Tonks.

"And where can he find you, Dora?" asked Alder.

"Nowhere or everywhere." said Tonks with a smile. "I look around the castle in my free time if I'm not with my friends."

"I see; I may join you guys from time to time then." said Charlie. "I must go back now; the class will start soon."

"Alright, see you around." said Alder.

"See ya later." said Tonks.

"See you later."

After they have taken their seats, they didn't have to wait for too long before the man Alder saw at the ceremony entered the classroom. He was holding a clothed cage in his hand.

"Good afternoon everyone. I'm Cillian West. You may not have heard me from your seniors because I have made a contract with Professor Dumbledore just for this year. But this shouldn't concern you, although we have only a year to spend together, I will not be doing the job half-heartedly." said West.

His direct speech made the students awestruck.

"Now, we can start the class, let us have a nice year." After that, West took away the cloth that has been covering the cage.

A small, about six inches tall, bald creature was sitting inside the cage. It had grey skin and yellow eyes that were looking around the room curiously.

"Does anyone know what might this little fella be?" asked West.

A couple of hands rose including Alder and Charlie.

"Yes, you. First introduce yourself please." said West.

"Charles Weasley, Professor. That looks like an imp, Professor. A beast classified in XX category."

"You're correct, Mr. Weasley. Now, can you explain to the class what you mean by classified?"

"Department of Magical Creature Regulation classifies magical creatures into five categories. While X stands for boring, XX class creatures means they're harmless and can be domesticated. Also XXX class creatures can be dealt by a normal wizard, XXXX class requires professional help. But XXXXX class means they're wizard killing creatures and impossible to domesticate."

West nodded and said "Well said, five points to Gryffindor.". Then he continued after a short pause. "Today we'll discuss the characteristics of imps and how to deal with them. A little bit sad news for you, we'll delve into the spell that can be used against them next week. So you won't need your wands for this lesson…"

While West continued, a few sighed silently and put away their wands.

Throughout the whole class, Alder failed to notice anything out of sorts and this time it was his turn to sigh, but it was in relief.

'It seems this year will be rather peaceful…'
