Chương 49: Diversion
Ye Ziyun pouted and wanted to grill him for answers, but Xiao Ninger put her hand on her shoulder, stopping her.
"So what should we do next then?" she asked.
"This world boundary is like a sphere covering this land from all sides, even underground." Nie Li hadn't noticed it earlier because the chaotic nature of the world boundary made it difficult to judge its nature and the distance to it. But now that Nie Li knew what it was, he could make an approximate guess about the size of the dome. He took out the binoculars he made some time ago and later forgotten about. And the mansion where it all started was at the center of it. Nie Li already noticed that the concentration of ghosts was higher close to the mansion. There must be something at the center of it, that could be the key to leaving this world.
He gave the binoculars to the girls and took out Starlight Crafting Plate.
"Girls, I have to repair the scanner. It stopped working after being overloaded. Watch the surroundings." Nie Li warned the girls. He had to replace the sensitive soul crystal matrix because most likely it was burnt out.
Girls watched curiously what he was doing. But considering everything was done inside the work chamber there was nothing to see.
Ye Ziyun looked through the binoculars to the distance and exclaimed, "Oh. This spyglass is great! It's so clear and two eyepieces actually make better sense than only one!"
She gave binoculars to Xiao Ning'er. "Where does he get so many strange artifacts?" she asked looking at Nie Li who was sitting in a lotus position concentrating on a strange black plate.
Xiao Ning'er took her eyes off the binoculars and replied, "Most likely he makes them himself." She held a deep admiration for Nie Li so had no doubts about Nie Li's capabilities.
Meanwhile, Nie Li finished with the scanner and started working on a new base station and a couple of walkie-talkies. He didn't have time to create anything more complex. He could see that his phone actually was not disconnected from the original base station he left behind in his dorm. But the connection was too weak and was almost useless. That was good news. This means he could potentially create some kind of real-time communication between the worlds.
He also made some lightning and light element barrier stones and lightning explosion stones. Nie Li regretting not bringing any Lightning attributed inscription scrolls.
He finished his work and noticed that the girls were diligently keeping a watch on the surroundings.
"Take these." He passed the girls the new walkie-talkies. "Your phones aren't working properly since we are in a different world. You may need them if we're somehow separated, but try to keep close to me."
"Okay," both of them nodded.
"We will return to the manor where everything started, but from another direction" Nie Li wanted to see if the things were the same on the other sides.
So they quickly walked alongside the border until they reached the other side of the perimeter. Everywhere near the Boundary, the things we're the same. Strange anomalous buildings and roads.
"Okay, we will march directly to the center. There must be something to allow us to leave this world" Nie Li said. Girls agreed, they have been here more than three hours and the depressing atmosphere of this world was getting on their nerves.
They headed towards the center. As they expected the ghosts started to appear. And the scanner allowed them to notice the ghosts beforehand. Ghosts looked like glowing figures with red clouds around their heads. And when the ghost got killed their form collapsed and the red cloud fleed in the direction of the center.
There really must be something there. Whatever it is it must be something extraordinary. Because he had never heard that one real world could be placed inside another. Mostly because the real worlds were extremely large and no one even thought about moving them before. And this world was abnormally small.
They entered the mansion's territory through the wall this time because there were no gates near them. The number of ghosts started to rise. But the trio was still dealing with them easily. Again he noticed that the ghosts were targeting Xiao Ning'er more than him and Ye Ziyun. Xiao Ning'er also noticed it and was frowning.
"Nie Li, some of the ghosts wear my family's insignia."
"Oh." Now that he was paying attention he could see that some of the ghosts really had the insignia of the Winged Dragon family on their clothes. "Did your family have any connection to the Mo family?" Nie Li asked.
"I don't know. I have never heard about them."
"Okay. It happened more than 70 years ago. We can learn about it later. Now take a position between me and Ziyun. Ghosts are targeting you specifically."
"I can deal with them." she refuted feeling a bit hurt that Nie Li thought that she couldn't deal with these weak ghosts.
"These ones? Yes. But their numbers are rising and there could be even stronger ones."
Ye Ziyun also agreed with him. Ghosts became even more insane when they noticed Xiao Ning'er. So they continued their path, Nie Li taking the front and Ye Ziyun taking the rear.
The number of ghosts attacking them continued to rise. And indeed appeared some less zombie looking more powerful ghosts. But still, they weren't a serious threat. At one time they became surrounded by hundreds of ghosts. But a strategic usage of lightning barriers and their personal skills allowed them to pass through unscathed. But when they reached the central area they became more cautious. The patrols here numbered in hundreds.
So they hid their presence avoiding the patrols. Facing them head-on would cause them to be piled up by thousands of ghosts. And without special preparations that may end badly for them.
Nie Li considered telling the girls to stay here while he would investigate further areas alone. But he knew girls would disagree. And he was also worried that if another wave appears and teleports them somewhere else, they will become separated.
They got as close as they could to the central building. It was glowing brightly in the scanner because of the thousands of ghosts surroundings it like bees. The trio picked one of the houses that were empty of the ghosts and hid inside. Even though the ghosts could pass through the walls, they still needed a direct line of sight or sounds to detect enemies.
Nie Li noticed that the ghosts were actively looking for them. That meant they had at least some intellect. Not much, but it was enough to search the surroundings of where they had last seen their enemy.
And a dense cloud of ghosts made it impossible to see anything inside the patriarch's house. And directly attacking it was also impossible. There were simply too many ghosts here. So some diversion was in order.
"Girls, I am going to create some diversion. You stay here and report to me any changes that are happening here." Nie Li said.
"Wouldn't be it dangerous for you to go alone?" Ye Ziyun asked frowning.
"No, it shouldn't be. I will carefully plant some traps and avoid a direct confrontation." Seeing that the girls were still hesitating he continued, "I don't want to separate as well but someone must stay here and report any changes to me immediately."
Girls reluctantly nodded.
"Okay, I am leaving the scanner with you. Watch that building. If something is happening contact me immediately."
Nie Li left the building from the back door and moved towards the training grounds he noted on the map of the property. Even though it was in ruins now, it was an ideal location for traps.
It wasn't far from the center so Nie Li quickly reached it. There was a large space covered with training areas, obstacle courses, and ruins of the buildings. There were some intact buildings in the center and some ghosts were floating around them aimlessly.
Nie Li took out some holographic projectors he made as an accessory for his cellphones but then mostly replaced them with illusion patterns. They are going to be very useful here. He spread a number of them in the adjacent alleys. He can control them through his phone. Basically, these ghosts didn't have any supernatural senses. They found their enemies by sight or hearing. And it was easy to fool them.
Nie Li hid in one of the buildings and activated the hologram of himself in one of the alleys visible from the training grounds. Then the hologram made a noise. Ghosts became alert and quickly started moving towards the hologram. When they reached it, that hologram shut down and another one further away activated. They glided towards it. The second one shut down and the third one activated.
Ghosts dumbly followed the trail. After some tries, Nie Li automated the process and activated other projections on the other sides as well. Now all the ghosts in the training were busy running from one projector to another. But this was not the main diversion.
During their fight, Nie Li noticed that killing ghosts attracted more of them to that location. As if they could feel their fellow's death. The more get killed the more ghosts will be alerted. So he is going to create a huge multi-step killing array.
He started filling the grounds with inscription pattern arrays. There were many types. But mostly lightning barrier and lightning explosive patterns because they had been very useful against ghosts so far. Still, he added other elemental arrays as well for the experiment. It had taken him almost an hour to finish. The grounds were large. He frequently asked the girls for reports and they told them there were no changes on their side.
