He didn’t. Instead, he totally ignored me and turned around. In his deep and soothing voice, he asked Sophia, “Only one of?”
Sophia blushed and lowered her head as if she was really shy, “Your Highness… ”
The whole scene caused a cold and hard knot in my stomach and I felt like a fool for ever making him anything.
It was clear now that all he’d ever wanted from me was help in getting his berry to grow. I fisted my hands, trying to fight back the bitterness.
I couldn’t understand why I was so upset. Yes, I might have considered myself a friend of his, and whoever that he chose to be with really wasn’t my business, right?
But that wasn’t working… I couldn’t help feeling betrayed, somehow, and it hurt, especially when I heard Sophia giggle.
Rounding the corner, I saw two other girls coming down the hallway. “Oh, look over there. It’s the has been,” one of them said, and then they laughed. I recognized them as being friends of Sophia.
