"On what grounds are you searching my home? Do you have a search warrant?"
Charlotte Cooper asked, her voice neither low nor raised.
The police were taken aback. They didn't have a search warrant. They looked at each other and then at the person in charge.
"Miss Cooper, you must be aware of the impact your matter has online. Without a search, the truth might never come out. If nothing turns up, it will only prove your innocence," the lead police officer said, looking at Charlotte.
It sounded reasonable, but if they really proceeded with the search today, the rumours might get even more out of control.
Charlotte did not miss the look in their eyes. She took out her cellphone and dialed a number. "If you want to search, go ahead, but I would like my lawyer to discuss it with you first."
She briefly explained her situation and then handed the phone to the leading officer.
After some hesitation, he took the phone.
