Chương 16: 016 Lost Heart
Today I had to partake in the investigation. My hair was put into a long braid to not get in the way, my hands covered in white gloves. I was supposed to meet Kluger Effiys, an important person at the examination.
He is a scholar who could have been the next top mage but instead chose to be what he had dreamed of being since he was a child. Many had called him a fool.
The ride to the scene was not long, only a couple of minutes far from the temple. As I got out of the carriage, the smell was foul.
A few men had stood around the alley, A particular man, which I assumed was Kluger, was looking over some papers, his brunette hair looming over his pale face, a delight mark under his eye. He was handsome, as any lady would think.
Soon he had looked up smiling at me, ushering me over, which I had done. I tried to get used to the rotting smell.
He had bowed "I am honored to be in your holiness's presence. Thank you for joining this investigation."
I gave a small smile. "Thank you for having me here, Sir Effiys."
"Please, Kluger would do." I nodded in response. "I must warn you, your holiness, the sight is appalling, most could not withstand it, and fainted.
I nodded once more. We headed inside the alley, the smell becoming more and more potent.
My face turned into a frown.
My shoes had stepped into dried blood, that seemed to be spread in every direction. Even on the walls. Then there was the body. My stomach turned.
A small boy's body rotting, the skin on him almost gone. The eyes seemed to be eaten out by rats. his whole abdomen was open, showing no sort of organs inside.
Rats squeaked as we approached heading out of the gaping hole. I gagged.
"We had found the organs splattered everywhere. They didn't seem to be eaten. Like the being was doing it for fun.." He paused before continuing to process the situation himself.
"The only organ we could not find was the heart. The beast must have eaten it." Kluger put a finger on his chin. "His eyes also weren't eaten by the rats.
It was ripped out and tossed aside"
Indeed, it did seem like this was just child's play for the demon. I glanced around the area trying to find more clues.
"I must wipe away any lingering demonic energy before it curses this area."
"curses?" I nodded at his question. "If I leave the energy to settle into the earth, curses such as death, and diseases may infect the civilians. Diseases are not easy to cure, especially when it comes from demonic origins."
"I see.." He nodded before giving me space. I put my gloved hand on the boy's body, closing my eyes. This was more powerful than I had imagined.
Just as the reports said, the energy was black... The energy felt the same as...
"saintess?" I head Kluger call out, bringing me out my train of thought. He seemed to be worried. I opened my eyes. "what is it?"
"your nose.." He pointed to his own, offering a handkerchief to me. I then had realized blood was flowing tremendously out of my nose.
I had taken the cloth thanking him, as I put it to my nose, continuing to analyze. Then a large flow of divine power had released out of my palm, which Kluger seemed to feel, staggering. I had stood up frowning.
Something was not right. Or I would not figure something out. I was sure I felt this energy before. I thought hard closing my eyes in the process.
Carriage...Yes, that time in the carriage where I was crying, and Achlys had gotten angry. I'm sure I felt the same demonic energy come out of him. Of course, I had ignored it.
"Saintess, are you finished?" Kluger had asked still worried. "Ah, yes. There is just something I couldn't figure out?"
He gave me a questioning look.
"It's nothing... I will tell you when I know more, or figure out anything." He nodded with a smile.
"All right. Thank you for your work today. I look forward to working with you later on."
I didn't return the smile, heading back to the carriage. I must meet Achlys right away.
