Adela climbed down from the bed to wash her face and prepare. But then she remembered that it was still too early for Agnes to come and bring her the daily freshwater to wash her face. She did not know what else to do and decided to get dressed although Agnes helped her get dressed every morning, it would not be difficult to do it alone.
She would dress simply anyway, nothing formal - Nothing with drawstrings on the back or anything else tricky to wear-.
The father allowed both sisters to dress more simply and comfortably when home, especially in the hot summer.
But when it comes to visiting or receiving people at home, things change. They had to be decently dressed and beautifully combed.
She wore her favorite blue shirt and her blue skirt, whose length was up to the ankle, like all her skirts and dresses, after all. She also put on her brown leather ankle boots, ready. She could only wait for Agnes.
As she was sitting waiting for Agnes, an idea occurred to her. To go to the well now under the pretext that she needs water. She approached the window to check the stables. She saw him. Yes, she should go now. But… but everything would end there. She could not approach him again, talk to him again, or look at him because he would now know that she was the daughter of the lord. What if she went dressed as a maid? She had the clothes. An impulse ignited in her to do it, to dare it. But in the end, she lost her nerve. What if any one of her family sees her? Her father, for example. That would be terrible. She could not even think about it. She did not even know what time her father woke up every day. When she wakes up, her father is already gone. She eventually dismissed the idea as too risky.
"I will wait for Agnes first," she said firmly. "She has better ideas than I do. She managed to bring the clothes just fine. She will have something to suggest to me now too. That's exactly what I'll do. I'll wait".
She sat on the bed with nothing to do until her gaze fell on the book she had supposedly sent Agnes to bring her from the library the day before. She took it in her hands and started leafing through it. She had already read it in the past, but it had been a long time since. She began to reread it. She absorbed it and did not even realize that the time had passed until the door opened. Agnes entered, carrying the freshwater for Adela.
Agnes was surprised to see Adela awake and already dressed. Every day she needs to wake her up. The father had set a specific hour for the housewives to wake up. As he said, he did not accept the women of his family to sleep all day. He did not want to give people the right to gossip about his family.
"Good morning, Adela. It impresses me that you have already woken up," she told her with a smile.
"Good morning, Agnes. I was waiting for you."
"Why? What happened?"
Adela jumped up and approached Agnes in excitement.
"Today might be the big day that I will finally see him up close!"
"Please do not get that excited because it may not be convenient to be done today. We need the maids to be very busy; we must organize the whole plan very well and carefully. No mistakes should be made. Not even one."
"Yes, you are absolutely right. So. I did well, and I was waiting for you."
"Why are you saying this?" Agnes asked in wonder.
Adela told her what she was about to do.
"Oh, my God, fortunately, you did not. Sometimes some maids wake up very early. They just do not come home. They stay in bed, snuggling up until it's time to get up. If you finally did what you think, there was a big chance for the maids to see you."
"Really?" Adela's eyes opened wide in horror, "God enlightened me, and I did not do it."
"We have to move methodically," Agnes said in a low voice as if someone were listening to them. Still, as they were in the chamber, there was no way a word could escape through the thick walls and the heavy door.
They were insured as long as they were speaking in there with the door shut.
"I will watch where each of the maids goes today, and I will tell you if we can proceed with the plan. Although it would be very convenient to be done today because it is the day that your mother goes to the market, and your sister goes with her." Agnes stated and looked at Adela meaningfully.
Adela's eyes sparkled. She had forgotten about that.
"But we have to make sure," Agnes advised.
"I will ask the mother. I will do it in such a way that the conversation will bring the issue to the surface, so they do not understand that I am scamming something". Well, anyway, my mother is out of the question, but my sister…."
"Adela, how do you speak like that? After all, she is your mother," Agnes said sternly.
"Yes, I know, but."
Agnes looked at her angrily. "There is no but. I wished to have my mother near to me as you do."
"Okay, fine. I am sorry. I know I have to respect her. I will not repeat anything. I promise".
Agnes smiled at her. "Come wash your face, and I will go and check what is happening in the house with other maids."
"Okay. After I finish washing, I will go and find my mother and sister to speak to them as I told you. Meet me here when you are done. If you come first, wait for me. "
"Okay. I am going." And saying the last words, Agnes opened the door and went out.
After washing herself, Adela left the chamber to find her mother and collect the information she needed.
The mother was always sitting with Emily in front of the window, embroidering.
She approached them. "Good morning. How are you? What are you doing?"
"Good morning, my daughter. We are fine. I am delighted because we have come a long way with Emily's dowries. Once we finish these, we will start yours. With such a dowry, you can see how quickly you will get married," she said happily.
Adela turned and looked at Emily. Emily raised her head and looked at her sister. Adela noticed a sadness in her eyes, which made her very sad.
She promised herself that she would hang out more with her once she finished the whole plan about that boy.
For the moment, she smiled at her encouragingly.
With a stern look, Emily just bent down to her embroidery again.
"Do you want to go to Aunt Virginia for a visit?" Adela hoped they would tell her that it was impossible because they had to go to the market.
