Adela decided to begin exploring, starting from her room, and she did not fall out. Agnes was there, tiding Adela's some clean linen and dresses. It all had gone for washing, and now its colors were shining again like new.
Agnes was so absorbed in her work that she did not hear or see Adela standing in the open doorway.
Adela stood and looked at her for a moment realizing how the little Agnes had changed! She had grown up since she got into their house. She had put some meat on her body, and she was no longer so thin. Her hair was long and shining with health. She really had beautiful auburn hair and white skin. And her eyes had a strange color that Adela had a hard time identifying. Nice, but undefined. It was not blue, green, black, brown like hers, or any other color that could recognize it. But she admitted that those eyes were beautiful and unique. Agnes had been blossoming like a spring flower.
Adela stayed rapt in thoughts for a while, but she pulled herself together quickly.
"It's great to find you here, Agnes," she told her in a pleasant tone. She walked in and hurriedly closed the heavy wooden door. She was sure that nothing she would say to Agnes would go through that thick door.
The little maid was happy to see her mistress, and this was evident on her little face that shone as soon as she saw her.
"I am glad to see you too, Adela. I have just finished with your clothes. It has to be carefully settled so that it does not wrinkle."
The first time, Agnes called her "my lady" all the time, but Adela did not like that. It made her feel like an old lady; besides, Agnes was her maid and her friend.
Adela asked for her to use just 'Adela,' and the little girl agreed. She would accept whatever her beloved Adela would tell her.
"Very well. Since you finished, come and sit by my side. There is something vital that I want to tell you."
Agnes's mind filled with wrong thoughts, and a great agitation began to overwhelm her, as Adela had not yet said anything to her. Agnes began to mourn and pull her hair. Her fabulous auburn hair!
"Do not tell me that something bad happened. Did anyone get harm? Could it be that you are driving me away from here? Oh, but of course, this is it!" She cupped her cheeks and mourned her fate. "Ah, what I suffered!"
Adela felt sorry for her and immediately rushed to make herself clear.
"No, Agnes, stop crying. None of this is happening," she told her, tenderly stroking her hair.
"So, you are not forcing me out?"
"Of course not. How did this come to your mind? Stop worrying about that; we will never send you away. Unless, of course, you want to leave someday. Then you will be free to go wherever you want ".
Agnes listened to her carefully and said, "No, no. I never want to leave here."
"Very well then. Nobody is leaving, and this discussion is over. Shall we go to my issue now? Is that why I really wanted you to talk about it."
"Yes, of course. I'm listening." A laugh escaped her lips in relief.
"But be careful," Adela said, pointing her words, "You should not miss a comment anywhere."
Agnes scowled at her. "Is it possible for you to think that for me?"
"No, of course not. But it is something essential for me. It is my big secret. I have not revealed it to anybody. I need help with something, and I thought that you would be the ideal one for it, precisely because I have absolute trust in you and because of course, I am sure that you will succeed. "You are so smart," Adela explained to her, looking at her sweetly.
In that words, Agnes smiled. "You can count on me," the little girl said firmly. "So tell me, what this great secret is, and how exactly do you need my help?"
"Well. Listen. I fell in love. So deeply. So much that I decided to approach him and talk to him."
Agnes opened her eyes wide with surprise. "What? You fall in love? To whom? Where? When?" she asked her almost hysterically.
"Wait, Agnes. Calm down with the questions. Yes, I fell in love. With the boy who works down in my father's stable."
This time Agnes was left with her mouth open.
"But he is a stable boy. A boy of humble origins." Agnes stated, and Adela pursed her lips stubbornly, "So what?"
"Your father will never agree to marry him. He is a stable boy. You will never be together. Your father will never allow his family to go through this humiliation. Listen, Adela, I am telling you that because one day, I heard the maids gossiping about a similar case to yours."
In this story, Adela's interest intensified. "So, you are telling me that something like this has happened before?"
"I heard that, but I do not know if it is true."
"And what happened next with that couple? Did the maids say anything about that?"
"Yes, they did. The maids said that the girl's father kicked them out of the house and warned them that he would cut off their heads if they dared to set foot in his house again. I don't Know what he probably meant by that." Agnes said, and a shiver ran down her spine.
"Too bad for them, but I do not care what that girl's father did to them anyway. I care what I am going to do. I will just keep in mind that my father is not like this. He would never do this to me."
Agnes began to lose her courage. But she felt she had to persuade Adela not to do such a thing to herself because of an infatuation with that boy. So she insisted.
"But there is nothing you can do. You are not even allowed to approach him. Nor any other servant. It is the rule of the house. You cannot break the rule. You would not dare to go against your father, will you? "
"I can and I will," Adela protested. "I have thought about it. A lot. And I decided that I will not get close to him as a noblewoman."
"But how?"
"As a maid."
"But how is this possible? Oh my God! You will get into terrible trouble," mourned the little girl, getting up and starting pacing into the room.
"Oh, come on now," Adela complained. "There will be no mess. I'll be careful. He has never seen me. He will not recognize me. But I still need your help."
"In what exactly?"
"I want you to find me maid's clothes."
Agnes let out a sigh. She accepted her defeat, and all she had to do was help her. "Do you want me to give you mine clothes? Here, I'm taking them off now."
"What are you doing? No. It will not fit me properly. He will understand that something is wrong. You have to find clothes from another maid." Adela remarked, and Agnes nodded and submitted.
"Hmmm. So, it should be someone who is about the same height as you and be as thin as you ".
"Yes. Good thought. Is there a maid in the house in my measure? "
Agnes thought about it for a while.
"Yes. There is one. Sophie."
"Perfect! Go get the clothes, and as soon as we are done, you put them back in place. "
"What? You want me to do it right now?"
"Yes. When did you think?"
"I have to be sure where she is first or who others are possible to see me. Shouldn't anyone see me, right?"
"Of course not."
"Fine then. I have to study well maid's movements before I act."
"You're right. Do as you think. Is there anything I can do to help you? I can gather them with the excuse that I want to say something to them, and you can go to the dormitory where Sophie sleeps?"
"No. Such a thing has never happened before. They will whisper that something is happening. Especially Francesca. She observes everything. She wants to know everything. I will find something else to do that should not arouse suspicion," Agnes said confidently.
"Okay, Agnes. You can do it your way. I have complete faith in you." Adela said happily and continued, "I will be waiting for you here. Good luck".
Agnes took a deep breath, opened the door, and walked out of the chamber.
