"Shit," I yelled and jabbed the iron dagger toward the waterhorse. "Get back Varaux or it'll take you under." Didn't the brownie know better than to skirt death being so close to the water with this thing?
"She won't hurt you." He whistled again.
The Kelpie nickered but stomped its black hooves on the bank beside me. Dirt scattered from its hooves all over me.
"That's a good girl, Lassie."
I scrambled up, wiping dirt off my pants, and keeping the dagger ready. "Lassie like the old TV show about a dog?"
"What show?" He lifted his hand toward the beast, and she lowered her head so he could scratch her nose and muzzle.
"Never mind." I shook my head. "How can you trust this waterh - Lassie?"
"Oh, she's taken me many a times to places throughout the territories. Though I've never gone beyond Darrius'."
"Wait. She can take us to Darrius' lands? How soon - I mean how quick can we get there?"
