Chương 10: Chunin Exams
The mission was completed. Y/N wasn't conscious to see the whole thing through but from what Sakura just informed, Sasuke, Naruto, and Kakashi defeated them. She hesitated while speaking about Naruto, so she didn't push it. But it was pretty evident that she left a piece of information while recalling the events. Eventually, the funeral of both the ninjas was done, and from what she heard, it was a sad atmosphere. She didn't expect them to emphasize with the rogue ninjas. Whatever it was fired up Naruto even more.
But it put a distance in Sasuke and his relationship. They were clearly ignoring each other now. Honestly, it was a relief to Y/N since she doesn't have to step in between them before a teacher caught them.
Apart from that, she was under observation. Of course, she was allowed to go on with her usual lifestyle but she could feel the eyes of several people wherever she went. On returning, Kakashi informed the Hokage about her actions and she was questioned for long hours.
They had no other choice but to leave her since she didn't provide any information that might help with her case. Y/N was herself, feeling confused. She didn't know what and how she did in the heat of the moment either. No wonder everyone felt suspicious of her. But Kakashi put in a good word for her.
And strangely, the Hokage agreed. It might be possible that there was some kind of similarity between her and Naruto and they sympathized with her. She was ordered to inform any kind of new power she could find or do by herself. Although they didn't inform her about the ninjas that kept an eye on her, she could feel their presence. And it feel suffocating, but she could understand their reasons so she wasn't complaining.
Oh, but she left out the nightmares she was having. She didn't want to bother informing them with such a trivial matter. And there was no confirmation if there was indeed any kind of relation between her nightmares and newly discovered power. The only thing she can do at the moment is wait for anything to happen.
And for now, Y/N was concentrating on training herself. Kakashi recommended all four of them for the Chunin exams. Since her chakra nature was water, she did most of her training nearby water bodies with the help of Kakashi, who agreed considering he made a promise to the Hokage on keeping an eye on her. Although, she knew that she was giving away her moves to the people who were participating in Chunin exams could be anywhere, but she didn't care. The only thing she needed was a trump card. She needed to prepare herself.
As there was no doubt, without her kunai, she was practically useless in the missions. She even fainted and made things harder for the rest of the team. But, there was one sense of relief. Although she knew it was selfish of her to think that way but she couldn't help it.
Sakura was in a worse position than herself.
[ TIME SKIP ]
The day of the Chunin exams arrived soon. As they were waiting for Sakura to arrive, Naruto babbled on about being one step closer to being a Hokage. Y/N chuckled hearing him. He somehow managed to calm her nerves. Oh, and talking about nerves, Sakura looked like she could give up at any moment.
As they were walking up the stairs, a small smile of amusement came over Y/N's lips. Surely, this wasn't their test right? The genjutsu was so obvious. As they stood with a bunch of students in front of a door guarded by two other students, they noticed the commotion they were creating.
"Woah that's harsh," someone said.
One of the students punched a girl to prevent her from walking in. "Did you say harsh? We were being nice by comparison. The exams gonna make this look like a picnic," he said.
"Some of you won't survive this exam, others will be wrecked for life and some of you might go crazy. For chunin it's always life or death. Squad members are in your hands, so you better be tough. Delicate little girls don't belong here. We're just cleaning up the herd. You won't pass anyway so go home and play with your dolls."
Now that statement made Y/N a little mad. "So, that's the kind of trash talk we're doing here? Boys versus girls? You can do better than that right?", she said.
"Nice speech," Sasuke said, "Now both of you step aside and let us through. And while you are at it, reverse the genjutsu. We wanna go to the third floor."
[ TIME SKIP ]
"You know it's kind of weird how Hinata keeps getting shy when I even look at her," Naruto muttered to Y/N.
She sighed and looked at him with disappointed eyes. Surely he wasn't that thick-headed? Can't he tell the difference when she talks to him and the others? It's so clear that she has a crush on Naruto. For Y/N, Hinata was far, far more tolerable than Sakura and the other girls of her class in handling their crush. She was adorable.
"How can you be this blind?" Y/N sighed, "Nevermind. I don't wanna give that girl a heart attack." And as it turns out, Hinata has an impression of Y/N being an obsessed girl for Naruto. Any of the times that she made an attempt to talk to her, Hinata apologized in response and ran away. Well, it should've been obvious about what image she has for the rest of the class.
They probably thought of her to be some freak who has a crush on Naruto and doesn't let any girl beat him up. She couldn't understand why that was the case since it was the same as the rest of the girls. The only difference was they had a crush on Sasuke, and she defended Naruto because they cornered him to let out their frustrations.
"What?" Naruto asked.
"Huh?" Y/N asked, snapping out of her thoughts.
"What are you thinking about? Your face looks serious."
"Just..about the exam and the participants," she said. No way she was gonna tell him that she found these classmates of hers hypocritical. He was probably gonna babble it out loud and ruin her image even more.
"...Don't worry. I'm sure you're gonna pass. Even though, you have that...weird power," Naruto whispered to her.
"So do you," Y/N muttered to which Naruto looked a bit confused. She just gave him a smile of politeness and said, "As in, I believe you will pass too."
"Oh!" Naruto smiled.
"But...I am worried," Y/N said, "In case the power comes out in the middle of the exam, there's a chance they'll disqualify me completely."
"No way that's gonna happen," Naruto said. But she could feel the slight hesitation in his words. She couldn't blame him though. It's not like he's the one making the rules.
But it was nice to feel someone trust and believe in her completely.
"Thank you, Naruto."
