...it was a bad idea...
I should have not agreed to come with Selene, and I only had myself to blame.
When she said that she will buy me lunch I honestly thought that we will go to a random chain restaurant or even just pull over to a hot-dog stand.
I still had the image of Selene in my dream drinking gallons of beer and enjoying some grilled food and made the mistake.
The luxurious car should be a dead giveaway about the real Selene's tastes.
Yeah...
We pulled over at the super expensive restaurant, one of the way to fancy ones, you know, the ones that require a month-long reservation and there's a dress code.
I honestly thought that such places only serve dinners because of that, but no, it definitely was open, and of course, the staff had welcomed Selene by name, clearly showing that she was a rather frequent guest there.
...scary...
One look at the menu had me in a cold sweat.
A bottle of water was more expensive than what I had to eat through the past week.
The whole week.
"Go ahead, pick whatever you fancy."
Selene waved her hand at me benevolently while she selected five dishes and a dessert.
…
No, seriously, are the prices printed correctly, there's no way that food can cost THAT much!
"Miss Donovan..."
I spoke up timidly – free food is free food but ordering even the cheapest thing from that menu felt as if I was trying to rob her!
"...it's okay to drop the formalities, just Selene is fine – we will be seeing each other often from now on anyway."
She glanced at me while the waiter arrived at our table and poured her a glass of the freakishly expensive water – that she gulped down as if it was just a tap water!
"Um... alright... Selene... after all, I don't think that I am hun..."
*grgrgrgrgrgrrgrgrrgrrrgrgrgr*
My own stomach interrupted me with a horribly long and loud grumble.
"...gry..."
I finished the sentence anyway, closing my eyes trying to ignore how embarrassing the timing of that was.
"Hmmm? Oh, no, don't worry – it's on me. You can order the whole menu and take everything you won't finish home, I don't mind."
Selene only waved her hand dismissively and nodded at me.
"B-but... Miss Don... umm... Selene..."
I hurriedly corrected myself after she looked at me with a bitter expression.
"That thing with saving the email to drafts instead of sending it to me, it really isn't something that is worth that much..."
I tried my hardest to not freak out and just speak my mind – or the filtered, much calmer version of my thoughts, at least.
"..."
But in response, Selene looked down and sighed.
"Alexis. It's you who does not get the whole picture. For you, it's just one less job offer, but for the whole Moonsimonial it really means a lot more."
She said with an extremely serious face.
"Forget about a single meal here - because of my mistake we got you a whole month later than we originally could – even if I bought you this whole place, there still may be members who think that it wasn't enough."
Selene explained, picking up the menu again.
"I really recommend this dish, it's delicious and the portion is much bigger than you expect."
She pointed out, offering to help me chose.
"No, but seriously... I don't..."
I tried to refuse again but that only made Selene grit her teeth and look down, actually bothered.
"I didn't want to tell you this, because you haven't signed the contract or anything yet, but because I was responsible for delaying your arrival at our company, some of the employees even suggested that I should step down as the head of the HR. Let me at least buy you a meal. Please."
She insisted, clenching her fist under the table.
…
Damn...
How much do they want me at their company...?
I tried to recall what did I wrote in my application to make them so desperate, but nothing came to my mind.
…
...I didn't mess up and write something false, did I...?!
I momentarily freaked out but then I realized that I wasn't writing anything new and just copy-pasted the same application only changing the name of the company I was applying to.
...or maybe the desperation of the employees she talked about was so outrageous because they were that shorthanded...?
Was I going to fall from the frying pan straight into the fire of overtime hell?!
...still... It's like she said, I did not sign anything yet.
The overtime and the payment will definitely be something that I need to discuss thoroughly before I agree on anything.
…
I glanced at my own menu and checked the dish that Selene suggested.
...even the name sounds appetizing...
Since she said that it's counts as an apology, it means that there are no strings attached, right...?
"I'll have this one, after all."
I folded in and nodded at the waiter who was patiently waiting at our table all this time.
"Thank you."
Selene smiled at me, actually looking grateful, and glanced at the time before checking her phone.
"That said...Why did you go back to the bloodsuckers? I'm not the one to scold you for wanting some petty revenge for what they already did to you, but, you know – it's not like in the new movies and books, our species aren't actually that hostile to each other – I mean, we don't like each other either, but it's more like we are in a perpetual truce or armistice since none of us wants to announce our existence to humans."
She leaned back in her chair and said with a slightly bothered face.
…
What...?
Geez...! I must be really starving!
I could swear that she said something about species suggesting that she isn't human and neither were the people at my old company.
Whoa! Am I slipping back into a dreamworld with the same setting as that amazing dream from last night...?
"Sorry, could you repeat that?"
I shook my head and drank some of the expensive water that the waiter poured without my permission while I wasn't paying attention.
"I'm telling you that werewolves and vampires are not at war with each other – for example, we often hire vampires to erase memories of humans who actually saw us, and they hire some of our own if their business requires getting a little dirty and eating corpses whole to get rid of the evidence."
…
It got worse.
Way worse, she totally doubled down on the thing – she even said something about erasing memories and eating corpses.
...maybe the intern did punch me and I'm hallucinating because of the brain damage...
"That sure seems like the continuation of yesterday...
"Ack...! I should apologize for that too, shouldn't I?
I'm really sorry for trying to kill you – the vampires often try to use their servants to spy on us so I overreacted – sorry!"
...'s dream...
Selene bowed her head to me again so I only finished the sentence in my head.
…
...if...
...if she knows that...
...then doesn't that mean that my dream...
...wasn't actually a dream...?
"Alexis? Are you feeling alright?"
Selene tilted her head and asked with a worried expression.
"If there's something wrong, just tell me. You are our pack's first human Luna, don't take your health lightly."
She smiled at me reassuringly, but there was only one thing I could think about at the moment.
...it wasn't a dream...
IT WASN'T A DREAM!
