“When you said you knew men in Washington,” he said in a low voice, “you were telling only part of the truth.”

“Yes,” Pauly admitted, “only part.”

The second man took Paul’s ID from Carlos as Carlos asked, “Then it is true, the Americans have information about the assassination that they have not told? Why is that?”

“Because Cameron Andrews is being held as a political prisoner so that Ortega can get arms and money from the United States. If the U.S. tells everything, it will give away secrets that could cost the lives of many, including Cameron Andrews. Ortega has seen to that. That is why El Presidente stopped her execution.” From the way he spat out ‘El Presidente’ no one doubted that he viewed Ortega with contempt.

There was a moment of silence as everyone digested Pauly’s statements.

Raphael abruptly stood up.

“I must talk to Estefan,” he stated flatly.

“Estefan works for Ortega,” the second man stood up to block Raphael’s exit.
