“How long have I been out?”
“About an hour. Beto has a doctor coming over in a few to check you out.”
Carlos chuckled. “Really, he didn’t just want you to leave me where I was? I’m shocked.”
“I get that you two have problems, but he is still your blood. He does care about you.” Eugenio responded matter-of-factly. He took the towel off Carlos’s head and dipped it in a bowl of water next to the bed. He then wrung it out and placed returned to Carlos’s head. The coolness was very welcome, since Carlos could feel that he had been sweating.
“He might not after what I just did. How much did you hear?”
“Pretty much all of it. Not just me, some of the others too.”
“I’m so embarrassed.”
Eugenio got up and kissed Carlos on the cheek. “Don’t be. They’re glad you stood up to Menchaca. They think you’re stupid for it but are glad you did.”
