“It’s too bad you couldn’t make it. Leah was there. You two look a lot alike.”
What the fuck? Leah was at the wedding but I wasn’t? My mother had a lot of explaining to do
“Evelyn told me you couldn’t make it because you were having some problems in your personal life,” Alex continued.
My mother’s bullshittery knew no bounds. So, on top of lying to me about getting married on the fly, she lied to everyone else by telling them I was too busy fighting with my boyfriend to make it to the wedding to which she’d never invited me. Again, unbelievable.
“Right,” I said with a nod before taking another swallow of beer. I wasn’t going to tell Alex that my mother was full of it and that the “problems” in my personal life wouldn’t have prevented me from attending the wedding. If I had actually knownabout the event, I certainly would have been there whether Chris and I were having problems or not.
“So,” Alex said slowly, “Evelyn told me you and your boyfriend broke up. What happened?”
