«No!», Mark ran towards them. He shielded Selene and looked threatening his mother.
Selene fell without strength.
«I knew this would happen.» Veronica said. «This is why I decided to take care of her personally.»
«I won't let you.»
Selene rose from the ground. She couldn't see what Mark's expression was, but she could hear the racing of his heartbeat. She realized he hadn't betrayed her at all, he didn't want her dead. He was defending her, turning against his own mother, and against his nature.
«Mark, listen to our mother. Vampires are dangerous creatures. You know it too.»
«Not her.», Mark's voice was trembling. «Please… don't… don't hurt her. Please… »
Veronica couldn't bear to see him like that. She didn't want to hurt her son, but she knew the right thing was to separate them. «Mark, we can't let any vampires live, you know it.» she said in a sweet voice. «I know you care about her, but you can't let what you feel cloud your mind.»
