Chương 26: Chapter 10

«My little sister is not here.» Cassandra said, on top of the stairs, when the waitress opened the door.

Kurt begged her to let him in. «I just have to get back a book I lent her, it's my father's. I have to get it back now.»

Cassandra smiled. «It's fine. Let him in.», she told the waitress.

«Thank you.»

Kurt went upstairs and hurried into Christine's room, Cassandra didn't stop or follow him. She knew what he was doing, so she let him wander around her fake sister's room undisturbed.

The young man opened Christine's wardrobe and smelled those dresses. Being a wolf might come in handy for him to smell her. He didn't know if it would work but he wanted to give it a try.

He closed the closet and hurried to leave that house.

He tried to find the trace of Christine's smell among all the smells of that city.

But he couldn't identify her smell, it was as if she had never been there.

Kurt returned home heartbroken.

He would have liked to at least see her one last time. But maybe it had been for the best. If he had seen her, probably he would have changed his mind and he would never have left the city.

He didn't like the idea of living imprisoned in the woods, but it was the only way to not harm anyone, at least until he learned to control and know what he really was.

They quickly packed their bags and set off. «We have a long way to go.»

«It's not that far. If we take a carriage it will only take three hours. Aren't you thinking of walking there?!»

«I wasn't talking about that house. We have been turning into that forest for too long now. It's time to go elsewhere. In East Sussex, where we lived for a long time when we landed on the English coast. It will take almost a day to walk from here. But don't worry, we'll take a carriage, at least until halfway.»

Kurt wasn't too keen on leaving Stratford and embarking on such a long journey, but he knew that protecting that girl was the priority.

The further away he was from her, the safer she would be.

And maybe he would have forgotten her, one day.

At least so he believed.

But when he stood there on the cliff, as the waves broke and the wind blew, he was thinking of her.

The sun was still high in the sky, but he had to go back to the forest before the sun had set. That night there would be a full moon and it would take him a few minutes to get back to Speckled Wood from the Ecclesbourne cliffs.

Well he was faster than any human being, and he would certainly have taken a lot less time, but he couldn't take a risk.

He stood up and looked at the sea one last time before turning around.

He breathed the sea breeze once more. That scent helped him calm down.

But that afternoon was different.

It wasn't just the smell of the sea, he smelled something else, a familiar scent.

He turned and Christine was right there, out of nowhere.

She was not a hallucination, he could feel her presence.

Her eyes were wide open. She would never have imagined finding him there. That was her secret place, where she ran away when she could no longer bear Cassandra and the other nobles.

«What are you doing here?» she asked exactly what Kurt wanted to ask her.

«We moved. I can't tell you more.», Kurt looked away then turned back to Christine. «Why are you here? We are quite far from Stratford, how did you get here?»

Christine looked away, as if she were hiding something from him. She couldn't find an excuse.

«I have no time. The sun is going down and I shouldn't be here. I have to respect the curfew… », he lied then ran away, but this time Christine couldn't let him get away.

Kurt was really fast but not as fast as she was. He was too busy running to notice her presence.

The young man was so agitated that the transformation began even before arriving into the wood. Hold on you're almost there, he repeated himself, Don't think about her, don't think about her.

But nothing could distract him from the image of that girl with her golden hair ruffled by the wind.

His emotions were amplified by the full moon that had already begun to rise into the sky.

He ran as fast as he could and when he finally made his way through the trees he stopped resisting and turned into a wolf. The pain that tore his body stopped and he began to breathe again.

He crouched near a tree, believing that the danger was averted.

Then he felt branches breaking, one after the other. He thought it was his father but instead he saw Christine walking through the trees

Kurt couldn't run or she would see him. He remained in the shadows praying that she wouldn't see him. His fur was black, but his eyes were red so he kept them closed.

Then a strong light illuminated the woods. Kurt couldn't help but open his eyes curious as he was.

Christine was suspended in the air in her evanescent and candid white dress. Her golden hair had turned the color of snow. Her eyes, white and without her pupil, became red because she couldn't stop shedding tears. She was crying in despair.

She was the source of that light, she was the one who gave off that warm but sad glow.

Kurt got up forgetting he had four legs and a tail. He walked towards her. He wanted to call her name, but beasts don't speak.

Christine fell to the ground and resumed her appearance. In front of that big creature, she stepped back, rubbing her dress on the ground.

She was shaking. «I can't stay… » she whispered before disappearing into the air.

Kurt didn't seem to care that girl dematerialized before his eyes. He was more concerned because she was scared of the beast he had become. He was a monster and he knew it, but seeing her terrified hurt, even more than when he became a wolf.

As soon as the sun rose and he resumed his human form he decided to go to the cliffs again, hoping to find her there.

His father stopped him. «Where are you going Kurt? What happened last night? What was that light?»

«I hope to find out, father.»

«Where are you going?» Michael asked again.

«To the cliffs.»

Michael released his son's arm. «Be careful.»

«As always.»
