Chương 49: Sorcerer Thor Part IV

Demogorge.

That was his name.

The name that represented what he was; a devourer.

He had no real ambitions, no desire for the throne of Asgard nor to return to its golden city. All he wanted was to enjoy life to its fullest and bring a little chaos to the world as he did it. Mischief was one of life's great pleasures after all, and chaos was often a byproduct of one's mischievous actions.

Yet the question remained, where did he go from here?

His resources had run dry, the bodies of man and monster alike, drained of their blood, their organs and bones harvested and used in great rituals to summon Demons from the Splinter Dimensions. There was nothing left for him in this abandoned wasteland that was once his village.

The answer though was simple.

Humanity was a populous race, reproducing at a rapid rate, a result of the constant wars they waged against one another. There was always going to be more humans, souls that he could devour and bodies that could be harvested to once again open more rifts.

Though he had to be careful that he did not open a permanent entryway to the Splinter Dimensions. That was asking for trouble and Demogorge did not fancy his chances right now at battling against the Lords of those realms. They had risen to prominence by defeating their rivals, which meant they possessed great power.

He would be a fool to not recognise that fact.

Power and desiring it is common amongst all mortals and immortals, but it had to be tempered with intelligence. An understanding of when to act and when to hide. He knew his limits, he knew what he desired and he knew how to get it.

Patience in times like these was going to be his greatest strength. Luckily for him whereas Thor had possessed little, Loki had always possessed a great deal. These two truly could have been the greatest force in Asgard, unstoppable if only Odin had done something about it. Instead, he had waited until Ragnarök to fuse their souls in two. Perhaps that had been his aim all along, allowing them to live their lives how they wished without consequence, all for this moment.

For what reason, Demogorge did not fully comprehend.

It obviously had something to do with Rangarök and possibly preventing it, but that was uncertain. Asgardians did not fear Ragnarök, in fact, they celebrated it. It was the end of the days, but it represented the one true glorious death where all Asgardians, past and present were brought together and battled as the world around them was destroyed.

Their bodies and souls may perish, but their names and actions would live on.

Loki did not fully comprehend why they cared so much for such an event, nor had Thor. Neither had been fully accepted into the society of Asgard and so did not understand why the Asgardians cared for it.

But if Odin had intended for Demogorge to do something about it, he was sadly mistaken. He would leave Asgard to its fate and simply do what he wished, there was a high chance he was not the only Thor that existed in the universe. They would handle it, probably.

If they couldn't, then Odin had failed and Asgard would continue to endure chaos.

Smiling at the thought, Demogorge watched as Selene finished absorbing the soul of the last of the caravan they had been accompanying. The energy she could not contain was funnelled into her own phylactery. It was crude and not perfect, energy still escaped from it, but she was taking much more of the soul for herself.

If she could not recognise that though, then she would not advance far. He could and would not tell her everything that she did wrong, he simply agreed to teach her some things.

Looking around him, Demogorge frowned slightly, there was still some exposure and the main road wasn't far from this place. His attempts to take them down a 'shortcut' had partially succeeded, but not entirely, Selene had acted a little impatiently.

"We will have to be quick, Selene." He told her, hopping down from his seat upon the top of the carriage. "Watch the road, make sure that no one comes by and notices our presence. If they do..."

"I know." She interrupted, striding past him, Demogorge watching her go, she was a beautiful specimen after all. A shame about her attitude, she was highly independent and headstrong. Not a very good thing in a minion, but she was not his equal and never would be. Loki had a cunning that she did not possess, he had manipulated and orchestrated some of Asgard's greatest struggles without even actively taking part. His ability with magic was only surpassed by Odin, the All-Father.

Selene had potential, but Demogorge was hardly worried.

Her ambition was great, but she had limits that would stop her from ever achieving them on her own. Eventually, she would come back to him, defeated and weakened. Sometimes, the long game was much more sweet and pleasurable.

Forgetting about those thoughts for now though, Demogorge kneeled down and quickly began to get to work. Knife forming in his hand from nothing, he began to cut into the body at his feet.

There was a dark presence upon Gaea, Scathach could sense it.

A rising power that reached into the depths of the Archipelago of Anguish and Redemption and took power from it. What worried her though, was not this presence, but the fact that it was going unnoticed by many and she had been unable to sense it originally. None of the Gods, not even the Council of Godheads was aware of this presence and what it was doing.

The barrier that surrounded Gaea, protecting it from the Lords of the Archipelago of Anguish and Redemption was being weakened. It was summoning Demons from within it, opening rifts and entryways. But they were being smart and careful, to the point that the Council of Godheads was completely unaware of what was happening. Her words and warnings fell on deaf ears, and so Scathach guided her avatar.

A young woman she had found broken and beaten, violated by the very man who destroyed her home and one she blessed with her power. It had been through her, that Scathach had first sensed this rising power, it was nearby.

Her avatar, Sonja needed to find this origination and destroy it.

Only then could a terrible fate be avoided.

The beast before him was large, large tusks protruding upwards from his mouth like teeth. Large bulging muscles, a thick fur hide and a great deal of power residing within him. It looked almost like a Jötnar, only smaller and possessing fur.

Yet, it groaned and roared out, collapsing to its knees, hands bracing against the floor. Its green skin, grew pale and wrinkly as it fell forwards, unmoving and lifeless.

Demogorge let out a laboured breath, head falling back as he felt the power of the Demons soul rush through him. Muscles tearing apart and refixing themself, bones shattering and forming back, stronger than ever. Thick hair sprouted across his body, teeth lengthening into tusks. His body changed and morphed into the Demon that had once stood strong and proud before him.

Then it changed further, bat-like wings sprouting out from his back, spiked tail growing out, nails lengthening into claws. For a moment, the world around Demogorge shifted and changed, no longer simply seeing what was right before him, but sensing the magic around him, the slight shifts in the wind.

He could feel and see everything.

But slowly, he shrunk back down, Demonic protrusion disappearing as he funnelled magic into his phylactery before it destroyed him. Releasing a deep breath, Demogorge smiled happily, running one hand through his hair as he turned to look upon Selene who was standing waiting for him.

"That was much bigger than usual." She noted.

"Indeed it was." He had been careful in the beginning, sticking to weaker Demons like Imps and its offshoots. They were the weakest of all Demons, the perfect way to accumulate enough strength to continue taking power from Demons within his body without it destroying him from within.

The bodies he had gathered were small, but there was too many to keep to acting like the way he had in the past. Demogorge had needed to be quick, ensure that no one could wander upon them. So he had taken a risk, using them all to open a larger rift and bring forth and stronger and more powerful Demon.

A risk it may have been, but it had paid off.

Sometimes the recklessness of Thor could work in his favour, more so than the careful planning of Loki. "Let us leave this place before anyone comes across us."
