[Present Day]
It was a pleasant morning and in that pleasant and silent morning, the sound of an engine bugged its whole surrounding. It was the sound of a train running wild on the rails.
The group of two had made it out safely from Aomori's deserted city where they were chased by a giant and abnormal centipede.
Their destination was Tokyo, the city of the dead where everything started. They were the only two on board that train. And, that train was the only machine in this world which was functioning currently.
The train was their ride from Hokkaido to Tokyo. The ride of the two men who were the only ones alive on that planet.
They were the Last Men Alive.
Raiden and Joel.
Raiden laid down in the train's coach. He was done regretting things over his past. It was time to get moving. He stood and picked up the water bottle along with him which Joel had given him before.
He went to the far end of the coach. He noticed the two sides did not have any gates and were open for entry. He peeked out from the side and got the feel of pleasant but very fast air on his face.
It was a good refreshment after what he had gone through the last night. He opened the cap of the bottle and splashed the water on his face. He turned and looked to the backside of the train and found nothing. No one was following behind the train. It was going at a speed that the zombies couldn't keep up.
Raiden got in and made his way over to the compartment of the train. He realized that he should not have shouted at Joel like that. He wanted to go over there and immediately apologise to him.
He went outside the coach and jumped to the engine side of the train. Making his by the railings he made it to the compartment. He could see Joel sitting inside through the window.
He went ahead and opened the door of the compartment. He entered and Joel was patiently sitting inside. Joel turned over to look as he heard the opening of the gate.
"Hey! Morning," Raiden greeted.
"Heyo! You finally awake?"
"Yeah, I feel like it," Raiden sat beside Jeol on a chair lying there. "Ahhh, well, about earlier, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said that."
"Nah, it's alright. I understand and know that you went through a lot."
"So, you cool about it?"
"Yeah, of course, man, I'm chillin'."
"That's neat, then."
Raiden had cleared things off and everything went to usual between them.
Just then, Joel pointed out outside of the train.
"See, we are about to enter the main city in Aomori. We didn't have any problem before here on the train because we were going through the empty area but this time it's a big city and all the zombies will be coming at us from every direction."
The city was completely empty and isolated. There was not a single soul around.
The train entered the city with a lot of noise. It was going with speed on the rails. That was the only source of sound in that entire city.
The city was just like any normal city. There wasn't anything weird happening there. Like how the previous city of Aomori was filled with sand.
Everything there was nice. The weather was good. The air was fresh. Raiden and Joel were almost having a great time on that train.
Till the rumbling of the feet started marching towards them. The silent city turned into an uproar.
All the zombies started marching toward them from all around the city. They came from behind, left, right, and even front.
Joel and Raiden saw the massive parade of zombies running toward them. It was just like a horde of ants coming from every direction to surround their prey.
"Should we speed up?" Raiden asked in tension.
Joel looked out of the windows and analysed the situation. "No, we are fine as of now."
"You think so?"
"Yeah, they can't catch up to us at our current speed. And, if they come from ahead, they will get crushed.
Raiden nodded and looked out of the window to see if it will happen or not.
The zombies tried to come from sideways and clash with the train. They clashed but got thrown away by its immense speed. All the zombies coming from sideways were getting left behind to run after the train.
The number of zombies running behind the train was increasing as they went deeper inside the city. But, the zombies couldn't catch up to the train's speed. All they did was hopelessly run behind it and the train kept on increasing the distance between them.
Some zombies came from the front of the train, too. Their fate was to get crushed under the wheels of the train. Their body got torn apart into pieces as soon as the group of zombies came into contact with the train, head. Leaving the stain of blood on the rails along with their dismembered body.
It went just how Joel said. They were safe going at that speed.
Raiden let out a sigh and sat back in his seat. "Guess we are alright!"
"Yeah, that's why trains are the best. No zombie can even touch you when you are in this beast," Joel came back to his position as well.
"Right, and it's a lot more fun this way."
They continued their talk and Joel asked about a certain thing that he saw in Raiden.
"So, I don't know if I should ask this but that scar under your eye had been bugging me for a while, now. I thought about asking it before but it slipped out of my mind."
Raiden had a deep horizontal scar under his left eye.
That scar would be the first thing that anyone will see if they look at Raiden. It was a deep and old scar which gave Raiden's face a very deadly look despite how cool-natured he was.
"Oh this," Raiden took a feel of his scar with his hand. "I got this in a fight with Malkini."
"Malkini?" Joel asked, curiously.
"He was the type of guy that you would prefer he had not existed. And, on top of, having to deal with him in that apocalypse. Oh god!"
"Why? Was he a bad guy?"
"Bad guy?" Raiden chuckled but he didn't look happy at all. "He was a serial killer."
Joel got a bad feeling about that guy.
"You know what Joel? You were not the only one who was fighting a war at that time. But, we were also dragged into a war. The war for survival from human beings."
"Human beings?" Joel asked.
"Do you know Joel, what one of my friends asked me once? He said, 'We lost more of our friends from these humans than those zombies. So, tell me Raiden? Who is the real monster here?'"
Raiden took a small pause.
"I didn't know what to answer him at that moment. More like I didn't understand the meaning behind it. Maybe because…. Because.. I was one of those monsters myself."
