Chapter 40: Times Square
"Okay," Toad nodded, and Sabertooth, with his disheveled hair, let out a low growl to indicate his understanding.
"Both of you, quietly leave without being noticed," Magneto instructed, as there was an undercover member of Professor X's X-Men within the Brotherhood of Mutants. This was the reason they were often foiled by the X-Men.
"Understood," Toad, with his large teeth, turned and left. Unfortunately, despite their caution, they were discovered by Professor Charles Xavier's mole— as they tampered with their vehicle.
As a result, just as Toad and Sabretooth were about to capture Rouge, they were intercepted by the arriving X-Men. After a fierce battle, Toad and Sabretooth retreated, while Wolverine and Rogue were taken back to New York City by the X-Men.
...
"Why has the situation turned out like this?" Andrew, sitting in a cafe next to Times Square, couldn't help but comment on the citizens constantly taking photos and videos with the Ipsilon-class mutants.
Gwen, sitting across from Andrew, replied, "Isn't it because of your Daily Bugle's report?"
A few days ago, Andrew's words caused the Ipsilon-class mutants to gather in Times Square, which displeased the management. They had the police drive away the mutants.
If it were any other matter, the mutants would have left, but this was their only chance to become ordinary people again. Therefore, no matter how the police tried to drive them away, they would rather die than leave.
Director George was greatly vexed by this situation. However, the Daily Bugle detailed the reason for the mutants' gathering in Times Square. As a result, Times Square became a popular spot for people to take photos and share on platforms like TikTok and Twitter. The management, seeing that the tourists were not bothered, stopped driving away the mutants.
Most of the mutants resisted this, as they felt like animals on display in a zoo under the visitors' gazes.
However, some mutants quietly held up signs—"Group photo: $5, video: $10, special video: $20."
TikTok, Twitter, Facebook, and other internet tools were gradually changing people's lives.
"The Daily Bugle only reports the truth," Andrew said, "Alright, that's enough. I'll take you back to the Osborne Corporation. It's not safe here."
Gwen took a sip of coffee and asked in confusion, "Not safe? Really? The police specifically assigned a team to protect this place."
"There are too many forces around," Andrew pointed around and introduced Gwen, "That woman with red hair over there is Dr. Jean Grey of the X-Men, and the bald man in the wheelchair beside her is the famous Professor Xavier."
"Famous?" Gwen blinked her eyes and weakly said, "I haven't heard of him. I've only heard of Magneto. He's the number one wanted criminal in America, and they say he tried to assassinate the President."
"Magneto and Professor X are the two poles of mutants," Andrew briefly introduced and continued, "The person you know over there is Agent Coulson from S.H.I.E.L.D. And those few who stand out from the crowd are military personnel. Oh, is that Psylocke?"
At that moment, Andrew noticed an Asian woman with purple hair and a stunning figure. He was momentarily stunned—if he remembered correctly, she should be Psylocke, a mutant. The problem was, she seemed a bit younger, and it appeared that this world's Psylocke was different from the one in the movies.
Professor Xavier also noticed Psylocke and gestured for her to come over, asking, "Psylocke, what are you doing here?"
"The Hellfire Club hired me. They're interested in mutants returning to being normal humans. The Black King and the White Queen are also concerned about this," Psylocke said as she was primarily a mercenary and then a part-time model, "But there are too many forces here, and they don't want to attract attention. So they hired me to gather information."
Jean asked in surprise, "Aren't you supposed to keep your employers' secrets?"
"In front of that old man, who can keep a secret?" Psylocke scoffed and said, "Professor, if you have any answers, remember to share them with me. We'll split it fifty-fifty."
Professor Charles Xavier chuckled and was about to speak when he suddenly looked to his right, his face filled with astonishment. "How did they get out? Weren't they supposed to stay in the academy?"
Professor Xavier was referring to Wolverine and Rogue. They had also come to Times Square because Rogue wanted to become a normal person again. Therefore, Wolverine tagged along with her.
Logan, with his unruly hair, looked at the group of expectant mutants across the street and asked Rogue, "Rogue, do you really want to become a normal person?"
"I never wanted to be a mutant in the first place," Rogue answered with absolute certainty, "I just want to go back to my old life. I don't want to touch someone and turn them into a lifeless corpse."
Logan shook his head and said, "I respect your choice, but can you really become a normal person by staying here?"
"If one day isn't enough, then two days. If two days aren't enough, then three days. In any case, I must become a normal person," Rogue said, "It's a pity that I look no different from a regular person. Otherwise, I could make some extra money."
"The way those people look at me makes me sick. Honestly, I want to beat them up," Logan said with disgust. Just then, the screens around them, as well as the citizens' phones, were disrupted, displaying intense fluctuations. Shortly after, three imposing figures walked towards them, forcefully pushing aside anyone in their way.
Leading them was an elderly man wearing an ugly helmet and a reddish-brown cloak. Coulson's face turned pale as soon as he saw him—the newcomer was none other than America's most wanted criminal, Magneto!
By Magneto's side were Toad and Sabretooth. It's worth mentioning that the Brotherhood of Mutants was very powerful, unlike the portrayal of a few mutants in the movies. This time, Magneto only brought two people because that was all he needed.
"A group of traitors and disgusting humans," Magneto cast a disgusted glance at the people recording videos, and with a wave of his hand, their phones flew into the air and violently struck their faces, resulting in screams of pain.
Professor Xavier immediately arrived with the X-Men next to Wolverine and Rogue. Meanwhile, the police, agents, and soldiers raised their guns and closed in on Magneto and his companions.
The onlookers realized that the situation was not right and quickly left the area. However, many people remained, unafraid of death, ready to witness the upcoming conflict.
Psylocke had no intention of joining the fight. She casually found a spot to sit down, conveniently next to Andrew and Gwen's seats.
Andrew asked Gwen, "Gwen, are you leaving or staying to watch the show?"
