Third Arc (Fallen Heart) - 336. It's My Duty

"That sounds like him," Rose murmured, her voice soft and thoughtful. "Even now, he's like that. It's like he's been conditioned to think that any moment spent on himself is a moment wasted. But... I can't blame him. With everything he's gone through, it's no wonder he feels like he can't relax, like he has to keep moving forward, always focused on the next task, the next responsibility."

Sarah nodded in agreement. "It's true. His Majesty has carried more than most men ever will. And because of that, he's hardened himself in ways that are difficult to undo. But... with you, Your Highness, I've seen a change. He's not as distant as he used to be. He listens more, opens up, even if just a little. I think you're a big part of that."

Rose gave her a small smile, though her heart felt heavy. The thought of Angel living so much of his life without any real moments of happiness or peace made her ache for him. She wanted to help, to bring warmth into his life in a way that went beyond duty and responsibility, but she knew that breaking through his walls would take time. Still, hearing from someone else that her presence had already made a difference was reassuring, even if just a little.

"It's great that we're on the same page," Sarah said with a warm smile. "I'm glad you understand him, Your Highness. Not many people do."

Rose nodded, her mind still turning over everything they had discussed. Sarah had known Angel for years, had seen him during his most guarded moments, and it gave her insights that even Rose, his wife, hadn't fully grasped. There was a deeper layer to Angel's guarded nature that even Rose hadn't been able to fully reach yet.

"If there's nothing more, Your Highness, I'll excuse myself now," Sarah said after a pause, her professional tone returning as she prepared to leave.

Rose hesitated for a moment, watching as Sarah moved toward the door. Something stirred within her—an unexpected sense of gratitude that she hadn't fully recognized until now. Just before Sarah could exit, Rose called out softly, "Sarah…"

Sarah stopped and turned back, her expression neutral but attentive. "Yes, Your Highness?"

Rose took a breath. "I just wanted to say thank you," she said, her words quiet but meaningful.

Sarah looked slightly puzzled, her brow furrowing. "For what, Your Highness?"

"For your dedication," Rose explained. "For your patience in facing and serving His Majesty. I know it hasn't always been easy."

Sarah's expression softened, and for the first time during their conversation, a genuine warmth appeared in her eyes. "It's my duty, Your Highness. Serving the king is something I take great pride in. But... I appreciate your words."

Rose shook her head slightly. "I'm sure there were times when it was more than just duty. I can't imagine what it was like in the early days when he first took the throne—when he was colder, more distant. Yet you stayed, and you've been loyal. That means more than you know."

Sarah smiled. "There were hard days, yes. But I knew, even back then, that His Majesty wasn't just the cold, distant man he showed the world. There was something underneath all that. Something stronger, something good. He just needed time. And now, with you by his side, Your Highness, I can see that side of him coming through."

Rose had often felt alone in trying to understand Angel, in trying to find the man behind the king. But knowing that there were others who saw him, who cared for him in their own way, made her feel less isolated in her role.

"I hope I can bring more of that side of him out," Rose said softly, more to herself than to Sarah. "I hope he can find peace, even with all the responsibilities he carries."

"I believe you will, Your Highness," Sarah said, her voice gentle but confident. "You already have."

Rose smiled again. "Thank you again, Sarah. Not just for serving him, but for caring."

Sarah bowed her head slightly. "It's my honor, Your Highness." With that, Sarah quietly exited the room.
