As he closed the door behind him, Marquis Benedict sweeped the knights afore him with his gaze.
The heads of the knights hung low, their hands joined in an act of asking forgiveness. The Marquis put a hand on his waist, leaning all of his weight on one foot while he was tapping the other.
Marquis Benedict scratched his head with his finger and spoke, "I spoke with Commander Halkias earlier. And, as you all know, he apologized on behalf of your mistakes."
Upon hearing what happened, the leader of the knights stepped forward and bent his torso forward until it was parallel to the floor.
"My Lord, I will receive all of the punishments. I failed to do my duty as the leader. Please report this incident to His Majesty as a result of my carelessness."
Although the other knights wanted to defend their leader, it would be a show of indecorum if they spoke out of their turns. They just gave glances to their leader and knuckled under the displeasing situation.
Meanwhile, the Marquis was looking at the leader with an ambiguous gaze. Shortly after, he straightened his posture as he sighed.
"Raise your head, Sir Kretov."
The knight immediately did as he was told, but without returning to his spot. The Marquis walked towards the knight and stood directly in front of him.
"Sir Kretov, I accept your apology. However, there won't be a third chance for you lot. Please see to it that another layer of barrier will be created to protect the mansion. You're all sorcerers here, so the job won't be that difficult, right?"
"Yes, My Lord. I'll make sure that we're done reinforcing the barrier before the sun rises."
The Marquis nodded at the knight's reassurance, responding with, "The Ceremony will probably be delayed for a few more days, at most a month. The epicenter of the fire was the Hamlin Estate. The Empress would surely launch a full-scale investigation, bigger than the one we had for the Gertrude Dukedom Arson."
Marquis Benedict peered at the closed passageway behind him. All of a sudden, one of the doors burst open, revealing two nurses who were carrying medical kits. The second they saw the Marquis, they gave him a full bow before scurrying away.
The man's attention, on the other hand, was focused on the lady who was laying on the bed. Despite how distant he was from Ilya, he noticed how sickly her appearance had become.
Though she had gained weight, her body was still far too slim to be considered healthy. Her skin was paler than her hair, leading anyone to believe that she would disappear with the daylight. Fragile was how the Marquis really saw her, and so did the people around her.
Still, she was alluring in their eyes.
No one was more driven than her in seeking justice for those who couldn't. She was unhesitant of lending help, even to the people who couldn't return the favor. And the most beguiling traits that she had were her intelligence and strength.
Regrettably, it's because of those that she lost her life in the first timeline.
The Marquis began to remember the lady's last moments, so he quickly averted his gaze from her. He took a deep breath, closing his eyes as he covered them with his hand. For the nonce, he tried to empty his mind. But doing it was more grueling than he had expected.
In the meantime, the knights refrained from looking at the Marquis. Withal, they were beginning to get impatient. They were tasked with erecting barriers, but that would take them a long time. For them to finish the job before the sun rises, they would have to start within the next minute.
To their contentment, the Marquis shortly returned to his composed state.
"I apologize for being a bother. You may all take your leave. If you need any assistance, just call me using the Manna line. I will provide everything that you need."
"We're thankful, My Lord." The leader said, "Salute"
The knights gave the Marquis a salute, the latter doing the same. From that point on, they went their separate ways.
The outside of the mansion became busy in an instant. The perimeter they had to cover was not that considerable, but they weren't planning on conjuring just any barrier.
Manus Barrius, a barrier that could block magical attacks of the mid-tier level. A spell that was infamous for having ten dogmas. One of the dogmas was to have more than twenty sorcerers casting it at the same time.
However, the most difficult dogma to fulfill was the amount of Manna required to activate it. Within an hour of beginning the incantation, the sorcerers ought to collect 100,000,000,000,000 Manna particles altogether. It was a substantial number, quite unimaginable for a normal sorcerer.
It goes without saying that the sorcerers' concentration shouldn't be broken for even a second. It's crucial that no disturbance should arise during their incantation stage.
"I've already called for the assistance of the knights of the eighth order. Their soldiers will do the task of protecting us." The leader announced while roaming his gaze around the rank of the knights.
One of the knights raised their hand, asking, "Sir, what about Lady Gertrude? Who will be guarding her?"
"Count Schatten and the Commander of the eighth order will stay in the lady's bedroom to guard her. With that out of the way, wait for my signal ahead of starting the incantation. As you all know, the sorcerers should be synchronized."
Nothing could reassure the knights more than the presence of two highly exceptional sorcerers. They all gave their leader a salute before dispersing. The leader had already assigned them their positions, thus they all knew where to go.
In no time, the knights had taken their places. The men from the eighth order went straight to their positions instead of participating in the briefing. They could hear the leader's orders through the sound amplification cube that he was using.
Sir Kretov cleared his throat as he surveyed the surroundings. Once he was certain that his men were settled, he raised the cube and declared, "Begin."
