It was said that the civilization that were inhabitants of the current Badlands were powerful. There level of magic and elemental swordsmanship was unfathomable. But it was put under a curse by both the gods of Darkness and Light. Since then the land has become a no man's land.
This was all rumors passed down from generation to generation, it wouldn't be surprising to say it is a bloody lie or the stories are even missing a few details making the story told a few levels below the true story. Who knows?
"Is there any of you who can identify where treasures will be kept in a city. I don't really keep tabs on noble houses and stuff." Cush said without feeling embarrassed. He had no way of knowing where to go with gray fog blocking their view.
For Hunters, most find it hard to differentiate between high earned citizens and nobles. Life in the wild doesn't give a shit about stuff like that.
"We have to go to the residential district in the central area of the city, that's where most nobles and even city lords tends to live, only less than 5% live outside these... it's that way." Ben hastily pointed out the direction when he saw Cush didn't care about what he was saying.
"What do you expect? he's a wild man." Zoe who stood by his side said then walked forward.
"It seems to me that you feel it." Sye suddenly came to him and whispered.
"What?" Ben asked confused.
"That pull in your soul, so you feel it." Sye added.
"I don't understand what you're talking about?" Ben frowned. How does he know about the calling? Ben thought.
"No need to be jumpy, you'll understand why." and with that he left the confused fellow.
"Ben! hurry up." Cush yelled when he noticed Ben wasn't following.
Ben regained his thoughts and went ahead. Ben's heart felt palpitated and unsettled, that feeling got increasingly strong the closer they moved towards the central district. He didn't know what it was but it was a calling coming from the depths of his soul. It felt like whatever was calling for him had been waiting for this day and can't wait any longer.
"I thought this was a cursed land, how come it's not so ba..."
"Sshhh!!! You're never suppose to say that." Ben hurriedly hushed, he almost yelled at her. The rest were confused by his words and couldn't help but ask.
""Why's that?""
Aahhh...
Just as their voices fell thru heard deep groans all around them.
"That's why." Ben answered pointing to a distance.
Not far away they could make the outlines of moving figures slowly making their way towards the little group from every direction. The fog was beginning to become a lot more dense making it harder to see more than twenty metres from their position.
"I can't feel any Life Force from them." Zoe announced, a hint of fear showing in her voice. Apparently, elves as inhabitants of the forest are suppose to be more sensitive towards Life Force.
"They are called the Undead." Sye's raspy voice came from the side.
"They must be the citizens that once hailed from the Badlands." Evelyn suggested.
Zoe decisively knotted an arrow, Evelyn stood in the centre as they all encircled her. Ben stomped his feet on the ground and his area began to have a decrease in temperature. Cush already held onto his flaming sword and Sye grabbed his throwing knives.
The creatures looked no different than a human, however it's skin was rotten, clothes tattered, it couldn't even walk well. Ben know it was no different than a zombie. Dry blood could be seen all over it's face and clothes. The group came to a conclusion, it wasn't the lake that made most people disappear after taking the 'Into the Badlands' mission but this Undead creature.
When the first figure stepped out of the hazy mist came out, it had a lost look on its face and went on walking. It was until Zoe breathe out in relief did every thing change.
Like steroids Zoe's action bright the attention of the Undead creature. It took a deep breath in and immediately detected them, it screamed at their direction then rushed towards them like there was no tomorrow.
The first Undead creatures action attracted others, when they came into view within the hazy mist the group felt like these things had a tracker on them.
No one had to be told. Crackling sounds of high voltage was heard in the direct Evelyn was standing at.
Arrows flew at very high speed, there were so many arrows moving in the air it felt like and army of ten archers were firing arrows at once. This was precisely how she got her fame.
Since Sye didn't have any amplifications whatsoever, he could only depend on his throwing knives for long distance fights, while up close he'll switch to using his double swords. However, Ben thought otherwise for some reason.
Cush charged forward as burn marks were left behind his trail.
Bens' didn't need to be said. Every Undead creature that stepped into his domain were frozen into popsicles before breaking to pieces with a wave of his sword.
The wave of Undead creatures were significantly reduced but Ben couldn't say for sure. The baleful aura from the Undead he has killed were still there. It kept transferring to those outside his domain right after their bodies were destroyed.
Unknown to the team, the Soul-light that keeps the Undead 'alive' would be transferred to those still 'alive' whenever one was killed... again. Although the Soul-light would dim a little, it makes the other undead stronger.
From Zoe side, the Undead were getting stronger than those from his side of the battle. The same goes for Sye too. Zoe's battle was better than Sye's since she has Life Energy that goes against the Undead baleful aura. Still the effects are starting to wear off as those she's killed keep stacking up by possessing those behind them after they fell.
Evelyn was the bane of these Undead as her lightning disintegrated both their body and soul. It was a new effect she got after becoming closer with the element.
Cush was giving his best with every swing and slash. As long as his flaming sword touches their dried, rotten clothes and the corpse begin burning, it won't take more than ten seconds for their souls to burn too.
However, these Undead became smarter. Right before Cush's flames or Evelyn's lightning reaches for their soul to be burnt, they would 'eject their Soul-light and possess another Undead.
Things were beginning to go sideways as their circles began to shrink. Even Ben had to take a few steps back. His domain was starting to weaken Ben now has Undead that have been repossessed by more than twenty to thirty Soul-lights. This brought the difficulty on his side to a whole new level.
"Everyone! head for the central district quickly!" Evelyn shouted after crushing the fifth elemental crystal. She was feeling great loss watching the crystal turn into dust in her hands, but what can she do? She had to do so to survive. A few elemental crystals weren't more valuable than her life. "Cush, lead the way!"
"Follow me!" Cush shouted. He led them but was blocked by a huge Undead.
The Undead was simply huge standing ten feet tall, Cush looked like a child in from of it. It has a giant sword made from rocks. The giant Undead was huge and had the head of an infant. It was a very huge contrast to its giant body.
Because Cush was leading and was forced to stop the encirclement got shrunk to a considerable amount. It swung it's giant sword at Cush intending to turn him into meat paste. Lucky he dodged the attack on time, meanwhile, the giant sword left a hole on the ground.
"They're getting stronger! What do we do?" Zoe was beginning to have a hard time on her end because she was only left with a handful of arrows now.
"Move closer to each other!" Ben shouted at his side. Ben had one thought in mind, that was to change to his Flame halo and burn these filth to hell.
The ice began to melt rapidly. This stunned the Undead, feeling their restrictions lessen they charged forward like crazed bulls, determined to tear these humans to pieces.
As he kept increasing the heat, that feeling calling him from the depths of his soul came to him again. It was as though telling him not to increase the heat any further.
A tremble came from with his spatial ring, or accurately from his mother's ring. A light shone on the wall² at a corner. It was from that loach pendant that was his mother's. He didn't know what it was for. He once wore it hoping he might get any reaction from it, if there was suppose to be a reaction. So ever since then he just dumped it in his ring to hang on a wall.
The little loach pendant materialized on Ben's hand, out of instinct he wore it. His blood from a few scratches accidentally smeared on it. A green-blue light shot out from it and was imprinted into his soul. Immediately the cold surface of the pendant touched his skin, he began seeing fireflies around the battlefield.
"Nice pendant you've got there, but this is not the darn time for that, kid!" shouted Cush when saw Ben standing idly.
Ben didn't mind Cush's words, instead he watched as fireflies began flying to the Undead at the far back who are still coming whenever an Undead was killed... Wait!!! These aren't fireflies! They are Soul-lights!
Be seems to be the only one that could see them. He looked around and saw something different. Something was happening to the fireflies at Sye's side of the battlefield, it looked like any Undead he killed their Soul-light would be absorbed by him. Sye felt his gaze, he returned his gaze but only for a few seconds before focusing back on his battles. He was thinking Sye had an ability to attract those Soul-lights.
'Does this have to do with the little loach?' Just as Ben thought of this a suction force appeared over his chest like a tiny vortex and like that all those Soul-lights that flew out of the Undead killed were sucked by the little loach, preventing them from increasing the strength of others behind.
"I see..." was all he could murmur.
He had no idea what the Soul-lights were or what it could be used for; more so the loach pendant around his neck. However, within him, even thought he doesn't know if it is a treasure, he knew he had finally found... something.

AN:
¹Why it is like this is because he has the the highest numbers of kills.
²Remember, the separate space within the spatial ring is that of a room. So naturally, a room is meant to have walls.
