Chương 39: Unlikely Hero Arrives
The road widened as we approached the town and more smoke billowed in the distance. I could see the worry grow in the eyes of two of them as this seemed more and more out of the norm. They had said that many of the buildings were used for smith and ore work so it was not strange to see many large smoke stacks, but this was different. Instead of many smoke stacks it was one large wall of smoke, I could smell the burning quite a bit away which I informed them both about but they seemed like everything was business as usual.
The worry did not leave them and I suggested tying the cart to my tail while they rode it so we could get there much faster. It was not long before they both agreed and I was off at a much faster pace. What would have been another 30 minutes of travel by foot took only 10 now.
The smoke billowing out from the other side of the wall is not the only thing that could be seen now. In the distance as the wall came into view many people did as well maybe even a hundred from what I could tell. Small makeshift tents are propped up haphazardly around the road leading up to a solid stone wall 12 to 13 feet tall where a large wood and metal gate is set into the sides. Many of these estranged towns people are near the gate, currently some have long pikes that are standing at the front. Most seem to be equipped with mining tools others are seeming to carry supplies towards the gate like logs and stones.
As we approached from a distance those that were in the small tents seemed to have spotted me and they ran screaming towards the mass of people holding at the gate. About half of the contingent of people that were all clustered near the gate came our way weapons in hand. Those that looked like they could not fight tried to grab what they could from the tents and moved them closer to the wall.
Well I am in trouble. Good thing I have those two accompanying me they can calm this mass of people . . . I hope. I turn my head to look at the cart I was pulling along with my tail and see a disoriented dwarf and elf holding onto all the goods they brought. Heh guess I ran to fast, maybe I should have gone even slower. But he said that his cart could take a beating no mater what I did so I jogged along at a good pace not to fast not to slow.
So, hey back there I need some crowd control up here, there is an angry mob rushing me and help would be most appreciated. Getting no response I try repeating myself but it was no use she must have lost concentration on our link and can't hear me anymore.
Yeah I am not hurting anyone this time if I were to then the likelihood of anyone here trusting me falls to zero. I am just going to lay down and cover my head with my massive hands and claws while I wait for those two to get back on their feet. They will be able to stifle this crowd then, I am quite confident in my durability I should be fine.

In the cart the two passengers sat and massaged their heads never before had they been taken for such a ride before. Honestly they were quite surprised they managed to hold on. The acceleration was so sudden that the mental connection between all of them was immediately cut when they set off. After a moment of stillness clarity returns to the two of them and they realize that a small force of angry towns folk are headed towards them.
The people first readied what ranged weapons they had mostly makeshift slings and a bow or two while the rest approached with picks and hammers. Our new friend had plopped down onto the ground and covered his head at the site of these people which was really odd one would think with such an imposing physique he would stand tall against these ordinary people, he had just killed a giant earlier which was no small feet. There he was though just sitting there protecting himself.
I did not have the time to reconnect our connection before they would start attacking so we would have to do something.
Hoping off the cart I yelled "Stop!" which made all those paying attention to or friend to me and my husband.
"We mean no harm! What has happened to Shears Edge?"
Most who were ready to fight stopped at the sudden shout and appearance of an Alairi from behind the monster that now sat before them.
One man that seemed to wearing some type of guard attire stepped up and spoke.
"Who are you? Do you have command over this beast. It looks like it could be used for battle if anything."
The man seemed haggared and slightly wounded but he still lead the people around him with all the courage he could muster. He had yet to answer any of her questions but easing them first would be the better option in the long run.
"I am the wife of Vuander of the Clan of Runes, Alanda. We came here to trade our wine and spirits but it would seem that the town is in real danger. Would you not tell us what has happened so that we might help, every second we spend talking like this adds to your plight."
Many whispers flooded though the group that gathered around now. Some wanted to send them away see this as only more fuel for the current blaze they were dealing with others thought this was their ancestors sending them aid from the beyond. Who knew none of them could say.
The guard piped up again to say "The town has been attacked by the stone men, some kind that are not familiar to some of us that have seen before. They came from the mines and have destroyed most of the defenses we had inside the walls making most of the towns people flee. Not all made it out . . . . who knows what has become of them, ancestors protect. What help can you offer?"
She now wondered if he would agree to go behind those walls in front of her. He was sent to help her husbands people after all it was time for him to show it.
