Chương 35: David vs Goliath

Two large mountain giants blocked the path forward. It is quite amazing that these beings can hide their presence so well in this snow and a bit of tree cover. I have had many conversations with the wandering tribes that came close to our homestead along the mountain and found that their company can be quite pleasant. That is of course if you do not have anything they want but that is not the case in this matter.

I and my husband currently have a guest we are escorting. One that is a bit socially challenged, that is not to say that they can not hold a conversation or that they are difficult, but being near them and the presence they exude all the time can be unsettling, to say the least. Most of my forest and plains friends could not sleep with them around. Not that I have told him about it of course. It sounds like they are just too excited to be around people and that they have just been alone for a long time, and don't want to bring their mood down.

Now back to the problem at hand. I approached the two mountain giants blocking our path and asked them if we could pass and that we might be able to share some food with them in return maybe even a keg or two of wine. My husband would not be happy to hear what I am saying if he understood me but losing a few supplies and a bit of gold is better than doing battle with two wayward giants.

They said that our guest would be enough food for them. We could pass but he could not cause they wanted him. I silently connected my mind to our new friend and told him the situation. After hearing me he got into a more guarded stance ready for anything. The two giants getting impatient for an answer to their ultimatum began getting a bit ornery. I told my husband next about what they wanted because he never liked dealing with giants in the first place and he did not need any push to get him ready to fight.

I refused their demands with a quick no and got my bow ready. Both giants huffed in irritation and gave a loud battle cry then they were upon us. The larger of the two with its crudely made hammer rushed our new friend while the other ran over to us with his club.

The club swept over my head with tremendous pressure and hit my husband, knocking him off his feet for a second. I fired several arrows into the brute's hand and cheek. My arrows were a little too small to cause the giant much pain but he could still feel it and he did not like it. It flailed its club wildly trying to hit me carving large swaths out of the ground as I dodged its strait forward attacks.

Behind the giant, the one who was knocked away by the club in the first place got up cracked his neck, situated his ax in his grip, and made a beeline to the giant's feet. As he ran he spoke a few words into the wind and the runes that lined the ax blade began to glow a violent red. The air around him began to heat up until it hit a breaking point when he sunk the bevel of the ax deep into the back foot of the giant.

A piercing shout rolled over the snow-capped mountains while the trees shook from the rumbling of a giant falling to the ground. Near the other giant fought with all it had swinging its hammer with all the vigor it could muster. Most of the time it missed its mark and it would get a claw in return which cut through its tough skin but not enough to take the fight out of it. But enough of these claws raking across its large frame would be deadly to it just from the blood loss alone. Its hammer struck true finally impacting the side of the monster it wanted to consume not too long ago. Hitting it felt like hammering against a cliff face, it showed damage but nothing more than that.

The jaws came biting after the blow and in reaction to that the long handle was put between its jaws. Holding back this monster was an effort in futility as the giant was being pushed back with grooves of his feet making marks into the ground. He could see it, it was not there at first when he started fighting but now he could see a red tinge in his eyes. Something that was not present when he first saw the monster hunger, hate, something primal that could not be roped in.

There was a loud snap of the handle giving way, the jaws sinking deep into the shoulder. Blood scattered in all directions same as the scream that came from the giant. The flesh was rent the arm coming free from the body and down the beast's gullet. It did not hesitate to go for the killing blow continuing from where it left off shearing the head and remaining arm.

The road at this point was unrecognizably changed by the combat that took place on it. But there was still one that was not yet back to being normal.
