SEVENTEEN
"Wait up" I hear his footsteps jogging towards me and I walk even faster.
He then grab a hold of me and made me face him.
My lips went up.
No, Rose. Don't do it.
I was starting to crack slowly.
No, no, no.
"What's wrong? Is there something on my face?" He asked while scrunching his nose.
That's it. I can't hold it anymore.
I finally let out the laugh I was holding and my voice echoed through the hall. If not for his arms holding me up, I would have tumbled on the floor.
His face is all filled with dirt and his hair looks like a trashcan, it makes him look like a begger that we normally find in streets.
Funny, I am pretty sure I look pretty much the same.
Soon, he began laughing with me and next thing, we couldn't stop anymore.
"Y-you lo-look soo c-cu-cute!" I let that sentence in between pits of laughter but I abruptly stop when I realised what I said.
"I mean-"
"Thanks, you don't look so bad yourself" he use his cheek to rub mine but instead of snapping at him, I just smiled.
What is going on with me?
This feels a little like Deja Vu, I can't pinpoint when but this scene is familiar.
"Please tell me you didn't made another disaster out of the backyard!" We turned to see Violet looking at me with pleading eyes.
I quickly removed my hands and moved away from Christian as Violet gave me a look that I promised to wack her head for it later.
"Actually, I was just helping Rosa with the garden. But what disaster are you talking about?" Christian looked at me for the answer with a smirk.
"Long story" I shrugged.
"Well, if you are done with that. Go get cleaned up, it's time to make dinner" Violet moved past us and disappeared down the hall.
I didn't even realise that it was already time for dinner.
"You never realise time flies so fast when you are with the ones you love" he said that stupid statement and left before I could give him a befitting answer.
"Time to shower, big girl" I said to myself and went to my room.
*****
"What did you just say?!" Avalor suddenly yelled to the person on the other side of the phone and stood up.
I smirked.
It took you long enough.
"Honey, what's wrong?" Her husband asked in concern but she paid no attention to him.
"Are you insane? The project is ninety percent finished. How could they back down from it so easily? Do you realise how much loss it will cost us?" She ran her hand through her hair as she paced around the room.
Everyone's attention was focused solely on her, forgetting about the tea and biscuits. I was just enjoying the show.
"You are fired!" She yelled into the phone before smashing it to the wall.
Oops! That must really hurt, poor phone.
Everywhere was completely silent after Avalor's outburst and it took every fibre in my body to not burst laughter at their faces.
"I will make sure you pay for this, Lentino" she glared at nothing in particular.
Avalor stormed out of the dining room followed by her husband and son William.
"Who wants more tea?" I smiled at everyone and they all looked at me as though I just grew two heads.
This is nothing compared to what I have in store for you, Bladderworts.
*****
The next morning,
"Rose, please take this tray to the office, I've gat to pee" I took the tray from Helen and she ran out of the kitchen.
"Do you have a bladder problem? You literally just want to pee five minutes ago!" I yelled at her and I hear a silent curse from her as she ran to bathroom.
"Oh, the love" I shook my head and head to the office.
I balanced the tray of tea and cookies on one arm and use the other to open the door after I knocked.
Slap!
Slap!
I froze when I saw who was at the receiving end of the slaps.
Iris.
Have you ever felt so angry that you would feel so suffocated up till the point you won't be able to breathe properly?
That's exactly how I feel right now.
Avalor in all her glory, rocking a navy suit dress with her chocolate hair in waves was towering over Janet who was in a simple maroon office dress with her brown hair in a tight bun.
"Who do you think you are? Just because you are my son's girlfriend, does that makes you think you are a queen or something?!!" Avalor yelled at Janet while I stood, trying to calm myself.
"Well, let me break this to you, honey. You are just a measly secretary. Do you understand? If I order you to fire someone, you do that without a single thought" she pushed her with her skinny manicured finger.
I was about to reach out when Iris gave me stern look from the corner of her eye and I blinked my eyes from the tears threatening to fall.
"B-but I don't see the reason you should blame Mr John for something that he had no control of, ma'am. He has a family to ta-"
"Shut up your tramp! I don't care if he has a family or a whole city to take care of, once I fire someone, that's the end" Avalor spat at Janet and raised her hand to slap her again when I cleared my throat.
"Your tea, ma'am" I kept my head down to avoid eye contact and moved forward to put the tray on the table.
I don't know what I would do if I looked into her devilish eyes.
"Get out!" Avalor muttered and Janet left the room.
I was also about to leave when Avalor called me back.
"Ma'am" I answered as politely as I could muster.
"You are not to tell anyone about what you just witnessed. You would lose your job if you dare do otherwise" she said in a tone that deserved no disobedience.
And who am I to dare disobey the Queen?
"Of course not, ma'am. I won't tell anyone" I answered and left the room.
"I am sure your son isn't just anyone, Mrs Bladderwort" I let out a very innocent smirk.

As I see my target walking down the hall in the evening, I begin my act.
Sniff.
Sniff.
I used one hand to cover my face as I walked down the hall and bumped very 'accidently' into William.
He has taken off his navy suit jacket and tie and left a few buttons open, his hair is messy, a contrast to the sleek gelled hair this morning.
"Hey, Rose" he smiled but his face changed as he saw my face.
"What's wrong? Are you okay?" He asked in concern.
"Y-yeah, I am f-fine" I let out a sob.
"You look quite the opposite. Tell me, what's wrong?" He asked again.
"I am really okay, Will. I just..." I let out a heavy sigh.
"It's fine. You don't need to worry" I shook my head and was about to leave when he held me back.
"No, you will tell me what the matter is. Let me help you"
"How can I tell you? I would lose my job" I let out another sob.
I really deserve an Oscar for this.
"I will make sure that won't happen. Just tell me"
"Miss Janet.... Mrs Bladderwort...just forget it" I made a move to leave when he held me back once again.
"What's wrong with Janet? What did my mother do? Answer me" his voice turned hard as his grip in my arm got tighter.
"I-i went into your mom's office to drop the tea and snacks but when I got there....you won't be believe what I saw" I shuddered.
"What-what did you see? I want you to tell me every single thing, calm down. It's going to be fine" he assured but I think he needs the assurance more than me, he looks like he have just seen a ghost.
"Your mom was yelling and beating Mrs Janet. Mrs Janet was on the floor, pleading with your mom but she won't just listen. I was too scared to stop her, she just kept on slapping poor Miss Janet and after that she threatened me not to tell anyone an-and I was so scared she will get me fir-" he didn't let me finish before he was storming down the stairs.
I wiped the tears as I grinned devilishly.
"Rose, don't tell me you went and told Will. What exactly did you say to him?" I heard Iris's voice through the earpiece.
"Iris, my dear. Avalor started the fire and I just added fuel to it" I smirked.
"I never expected this from you, Mother!!!" I heard William's voice from downstairs.
And the drama gets even more interesting.
I quickly rush downstairs to see Avalor and William in the living room and I hid in the corridor, listening.
"Is it because of that girl that you are yelling at your own mother that way?" Avalor said.
"That girl? That girl that you so disrespected is my fiancee. She is the love of my life!" I have never seen William this angry. God, this is so interesting.
"She disrespected me first!"
"How? How, Mother? Was it so wrong of her to give Mr John a month to find another job before she finally processed his removal? Was it so wrong that she cared about his children at home?"
"I fired him. She has no right to give him a month, not even a second" Avalor spat.
"What's going on?"
I turned around to see Miss Helda's eyes darting between William and Avalor.
"Um...I don't know...I just heard voices and I saw this" I shrugged and she pushed me to go inside the room.
"Does that justify your nefarious action towards her? You should be thankful she didn't press charges against you!" He yelled.
"William my boy, what's going on here?" Miss Helda asked and William ran to give her a hug.
"Look at the boy you have raised, Helda. Look at the manner in which he speaks to his mother" Avalor shook her head at Will.
"Up till now, I have always supported you no matter what you did, I never questioned your actions but this is totally wrong. If this were to occur a second time, Mother, I wouldn't think twice before I sever all ties with you" Will said his final words and to be honest, he shocked me.
He really did love her.
He stormed out of the room and out of the house, not failing to bang the doors as he closed it.
"Sever ties? Helda, did you just heard what he said?" Avalor pushed the table in anger, causing a loud noise in the house.
"Calm down. Just give him some time, he will be fine" Miss Helda said.
I was about to leave when I felt sharp nails dig into my wrist and dragged me not so gently into the office.
"I warned yo-" she raised her arm to slap me but I caught it before she could touch me.
"How dare you!"
"May I ask what is the reason behind this, ma'am?" I asked as I dropped her arm.
"I warned you not to tell anyone about what you saw" she said.
"And who told you I did?" I asked.
"I-"
"I know my boundaries in this house, ma'am and I wouldn't dare to overstep it. You hold the power to fire me when you wish, not Mr William. Do you think I would disobey you and jeopardise my job?"
"If not you, then who?" She wondered.
"Word gets out much faster than you know it, ma'am. I am sure it was some other maid" I answered.
"My loyalty lies with you" I held her skinny hands. Gag.
"Thanks. You can get back to work"
"What are you all smirking about?" Francesca asked as I entered the maid's lounge.
"That's for me know and for you to never find out" I said and she rolled her eyes at me.
I wouldn't let her hurt my family again. Not anymore.
