"NOW LISTEN UP, BEFORE YOU CAN KILL YOU MUST BE STRONG."
More cheering from the crowd. I'm sure now, they don't get half of what I am saying.
"TO BE STRONG YOU NEED TO TRAIN HARD!"
The enthusiasm of the crowd ebbs together with most of the cheers growing silent. Not unexpected but still irritating. Kill seems to be one of the few words that interest them at the moment. I hope demonstrating what I want them to do will be more effective.
These guys mainly fought using their teeth and sharp fingernails. Biting and clawing aren't very sophisticated skills but they can be trained nonetheless.
"DO AS I DO!"
I would say imitate me but that seems too high level for them. Their reactions vary but generally, they seem attentive to what I am about to do.
I shape my hand into a claw and pretend to rip through the air before me. The movement isn't great but all I want is to get those idiots to keep repeating it until they get some decent skill levels.
I repeat the gesture once more and almost all leader skull goblins begin to imitate me. I also see a few skull goblins in the crows begin to do the same.
As I keep clawing at the air before me, more and more of them join me in doing so. They fan out a bit to have enough space not to be clawing at each other and after ten minutes every single one is imitating me. Time to lay down the skull goblin gospel.
"KILL!"
"KILL!"
"KILL!"
They erupt in wild cheers and their motions gain much more vigor than they held before. It would seem that while they are simple-minded creatures, they make up for it with undeniable dedication. If I can harness that dedication to killing and mold it into something more concentrated and focused...
"THIS IS HOW YOU KILL! OVERWHELM THE ENEMY. BITE AND CLAW AT THE ENEMY. KILL THE ENEMY!"
I suddenly feel how difficult it is to keep things simple yet make sure you are understood. Short sentences, on point statements, and, in this case, endless repetition. I repeat these same four sentences while maintaining the continuous clawing motion of my hand. With every repeat I sense my words sink in more, deeper. They are embedded in those simple minds. Like layers on a of watery color on a painting. Every stroke of the brush reinforces the color until it is rich and will not fade for a long time.
"KILL ENEMIES QUICKLY! AFTER KILLING ONE, GO TO THE NEXT. KILL MANY ENEMIES!"
After believing that the first few sentences have somewhat settled, I continue with the next series of words to be imparted. This one is very important to me, both due to concerns of efficiency as well as personal morals. I can still remember the sight of that elven scout being mauled by a bunch of skull goblins. She was in unimaginable pain but her tormentors were too busy hurting her to finish her off.
I understand that I should not pity the enemy because it will make my job much harder. However, I see no reason to condone causing such suffering when it is both inefficient and cruel while serving no higher purpose. Therefore I will impart this to them thoroughly.
After I feel like the message has at least taken hold within most of them, I allow the to take a break. Which is to say I stop yelling at them and halt the clawing motion I had been keeping up all this while. Then, I watch the skull goblins descend into the same wanton chaos they had been in when I came.
Why did I decide to take a break? First of all, continuously screaming is quite taxing on my throat even if it's my skill doing all the heavy lifting. Secondly, I saw a few legionaries with axes approach and begin to fell trees that grow to full size out of nowhere and in just a few seconds.
After having cut down nearly a hundred trees, they stow away their axes and begin to make perfect and shaved logs out of the trees using saws they pulled out from gods know where.
Having finished preparing the wood I asked for, I was honestly hoping for branches instead of logs, the undead legionaries bring the shaved logs over and pile them up before me. They salute and march back to their encampment.
What I am to do with logs? Can my carving knife even survive making weapons from these?
Oh, they left me a saw! That makes things easier. Still, complicated but easier nonetheless.
Now, how to make weapons out of this log and, while we are at it, what kind of weapons?
Before I just made makeshift javelins. They worked as intended when there weren't too many who I was making them for, but to equip one thousand skull goblins...
Throwable weapons are out and sharp weapons made entirely from wood will grow dull much quicker than their metal counterparts. That only really leaves blunt weapons which I am not terribly fond of but what can you do?
Staffs seem a bit too hard to use because if the skull goblins treat them as clubs they'll break them. Rods won't break as easily but I still doubt they'll be capable of withstanding the violent ways of the skull goblins. Clubs it is. But where do I even begin to work?
Pull yourself together, Guy. It's just dead wood that needs to be cut and carved into weapons. Wait... This is just dead wood? The corpse of a tree so to speak!
And when it comes to dismantling corpses into useful parts I am an expert! My dismantling skill at level 6 begins to stir as the saw in my hand digs into the first wooden log. Cutting along the fiber, I cut up the log into wooden shapes that resemble clubs. They are still very rough around the edges though. Enough to be used as a weapon but not without damaging the hand holding them.
Nevertheless, making the handles safe to hold isn't much of a challenge for me as I use my carving knife to remove the roughest and sharpest edges where a wielder would hold it. The rest though, I leave as rough as it is.
