Chương 165: The difference of where you cut (3)

The book was a fast read since it was really just a compilation of journal entries detailing the experiences and deductions made by the author. There is still another part at the back filled with illustrations and detailed descriptions of specific experiments and comparisons.

Two hours have passed, my tea has gone cold and I am wondering where Melody is. Navi told me before that my wife was finishing up and would be here within half an hour. Now two hours have passed and I still didn't hear anything from her.

I look up from the book and come face to face with the very woman I am about to go look for. Slightly startled I move backward and nearly fall off my chair. Melody simply chuckles.

"What are you laughing about? Scarlett Ng other people after sneaking up on them isn't funny."

"Sneaking? I called your name multiple times but you didn't respond at all. You were so absorbed in reading that book that you didn't even notice that I was cooking dinner. I am nearly done with cooking so set the tables. The girls will come home any minute now."

Did I really not hear her?

I leave the question of my deep immersion into that book for later and set the table. The girls come home and bolt up to their rooms to drop off their things from school after smelling the nice aroma in the air.

We all sit at the dining table and dig into our food. I honestly suspect that Melody has been taking classes from Pata because her cooking has improved when compared to before. Quinn and Cassidy seem to think so too.

The subject of conversation during our meal drift from one thing to another without any substantial topic until Quinn does an eloquent fake cough to get our attention.

"Mom, dad, we need to talk about something."

"Oh? What is it dear?"

Melody's tone immediately enters into dangerous territory. Beginning with such an opening Quinn usually wants to talk about something that won't sit well with both Melody and me. Quinn shivers a little at the tone Melody is using but soldiers on valiantly.

"In a few weeks, there will be a large school outing. Our entire year will go to a dungeon to get some field experience of what it's like to-"

""ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!""

Melody and I bellow at the exact same time. Melody is still traumatized by knowing that I died in a dungeon and I have been to enough dungeons now to understand their menace. Worse even, I've been to dungeons as both a human as well as a monster so I can be considered an expert in the matter.

And one thing I know, I will not let my girls anywhere near such a place!

"Let me finish first. We would be protected by a whole group of adventurers. Some among them with levels above 80 and advanced classes. And we would only be at the entry of the dungeon with the gate constantly open for us to get back if necessary."

"Quinn, dungeons are far more dangerous than you think. You don't know how horrible those monsters are."

I try to reason with Quinn but notice how dumb my attempt was the very next second. Quinn is a logical genius. I couldn't win a debate of reason against her even if she was half asleep.

"Exactly. If I don't understand how dangerous it is why won't you let me experience it while under the protection of such powerful adventurers?"

Here it is. A perfect argument that turns my own words against me.

"How did your school secure such powerful adventurers in the first place?"

Melody's tone has already begun to soften as she is bombarded by Quinn's reason and Cassidy's puppy eyes. This question also interests me but since Quinn clearly wanted us to ask about it she will probably use it to add to her persuasion.

"You see, in one of the classes in our year there are children of a group of strong adventurers living nearby. The parents offered to take us to the dungeon while protecting us. Since they are willing to take their children there it should be very safe."

It does sound safe but I don't quite trust it. Something about this bothers me. I'm about to deliver another refusal when Melody stops me.

"I think we should allow it. They'll never get an opportunity like this again. It can't be that dangerous, can it?"

It can. But I don't want to start this discussion with Melody. I'm probably just being overprotective. I smile and nod prompting a series of cheers from both girls.

"Don't forget our deal."

A single sentence from Quinn makes all merriness disappear from Cassidy's face. From what I know from both their personalities Quinn has no real intention to go into that dungeon. Cassidy is the one who wants to go but she knows she'll never get permission by herself.

However, if Quinn leads the charge with her considerable abilities in the field of persuasion their success is nearly guaranteed. Though I am a bit curious, what did Cassidy promise Quinn to get her on board this deal?

"What was that book you were reading before?"

While I'm still thinking of how to find out about the details of the deal between my daughters Melody happily switches the topic of conversation.

"The book is called the difference of where you cut. It's a book written by a surgeon who talks about the similarities between the dismantling and the surgery skill."

"Why are you reading medical books? Are you going to become a doctor?"

Cassidy as usual only hears what she wants to hear.

"No, Cassidy, I acquired the field surgery skill while practicing my dismantling. Since my company believes that I learned that skill due to my dismantling skill I was given this book to try and figure out how to efficiently raise that skill."

"Dismantling and Surgery? Seems farfetched to me."

"I thought so too but the book has been quite enlightening on that matter."
