Chương 10: Chapter 10: The Ice Cream Shop
Leah's POV
It was a Friday afternoon and we were in recess time. I was talking to Dana and then I see Seth approaching where we were.
_ "Hello Leah ... you look very beautiful today." Said Seth
I grabbed Dana and went to talk to her in a far away place and he followed me.
_ "Hey Leah, don't ignore me."
_ "What if we are going to eat something, I don't know, whatever you want." Said Seth caressing me
_ "I would not go out with you even if they threaten to kill me" I said removing his hand from my face.
_ "You think I haven't forgotten" Seth said and I didn't understand what he said
_" Of what?"
_ "From this" he said approaching me and he stole a kiss and I slapped him.
_ "Stolen kisses are the most enjoyable," said Seth.
_ "Seth, just go, I don't want to see you anymore!"
_ "Admit it, you liked the kiss" said Seth and left.
_ "Gross, he just kissed me!" I said to Dana
_ "Don't fall into his trap like other girls" Dana said
_ "My heart only belongs to Steve" I said in a low voice.

I got out of school and told Dana that I had to visit someone and I went to Franklin's house, Steve was there too.
_ "Hello" said Steve and smiled at me in a way that the shine of his gold tooth drew the attention of his smile.
_ "Hello" I said.
Steve and Franklin were talking and Franklin waved us all to sit at the table.
_ "The first time I saw them both, I remembered my precious Sophie."
_ "Who was Sophie?" I said curiously
_ "She was beautiful, her hair was red, her eyes were blue and her skin was porcelain, I was completely in love with her, but the races and the social hierarchy separated us. I was only her servant."
_ "We came to love each other until we could no more"
_" And what happened?" Said Steve
_ "They found us kissing"
_ "Her parents despaired, as they were going to allow a black servant to take advantage of their little girl. They took me to life imprisonment and I remember Sophie visiting me, she paid the guards to let her see me in secret. She said that she could not live without me and that her parents wanted her to marry a man who was very fortunate She wanted to escape with me to a place far away where no one would see us but she did not resist pressure from her parents and got married with the man. After they were married for a week, she visited me telling me that her husband was abusing her and that she was pregnant. As time went by, I learned that her husband had killed her and the child, because the son she had had was a mulatto child. "
_ "Sophie's parents decided to send me again because their daughter had become pregnant with me and they gave me a death sentence and I escaped, until now I have been a fugitive from justice."
_ "And what happened to the man?" I said
_ "They did not sentence him, the judge let him live free."
_ "How unfair" said Steve.
_ "That's why, I believe in you two, when I saw how Leah looked at you, it reminded me of Sophie."
_ "Franklin, you are an incredible person." I told him, we both left Franklin's house and I got in Steve's car and I closed the car door.
Steve got in the car and we were silent for a while.
_ "I know we're just friends but, do you think that happens to us?" I said.
_ "Don't say that Leah."
Suddenly the salt water falls from my eyes.
_ "Leah, are you crying?" said Steve
Then I run my fingers under my eyes to dry my tears.
_ "You are sentimental, I like it" said Steve.
_ "I'll take you to your neighborhood."
Steve started the car and as he drove me home I felt his right hand sink under mine and he squeezed it tightly.
Then he looked at me through the car mirror and I smiled at him.

Leah's POV
It was a Saturday and my mother worked like she does every day, I looked after my little brothers and my father was in Oklahoma.
My little brothers played in the yard while I made breakfast. I thought about how energetic those children were, because they hadn't even had breakfast and they had such strength.
Then the sound of the door is heard.
_ "David, open the door" I said calling my brother.
_ "It's Dana" David said as she entered the house.
_ "Hello little one, and your sister"
Dana walked over to the kitchen, where I was making pancakes.
_" Hi"
_" As are you this morning?"
_ "Somewhat exhausted"
_ "I would like to have some time to rest."
_ "Leah Isaac is climbing on the fence!" Said Mary
_ "Do you understand why?" I told Dana and she nodded.
_ "Hey, kid get down from there, if you don't, you're going to fall."
The fence began to wobble and when Isaac was about to fall Dana picked him up and put him on the ground.
_ "The fence is damaged, don't even go near it" said Dana
_ "If you want, call Paul, he fixes everything"
_" It's okay"
_ "Hey kids, you prefer, watch a movie or listen to a radio program."
_ "We want to listen to the radio"
All the children came into the room with Dana and listened to a fairy tale program that they gave every Saturday.
_ "Children breakfast!" I said
All the children took their plates and sat in front of the radio.
Dana stayed at my house all day, until it got dark, the kids were sleeping, obviously Caleb wasn't sleeping, but he was quiet in his crib. and my mother slept in her room, only me and Dana stayed in the living room, it was 7 at night.
_ "Leah, I have a surprise for you"
_" What is it"
_ "I think we have to wait a while." said Dana
_" But tell me!"
_" Do not ask"
We waited a few minutes until the door opened and Steve appeared at my place.
_ "Leah, Steve has to tell you something"
_ "Leah ... I've been trying to tell you all this time, since I met you, I fell in love with your beauty and especially with your way of being, every night I dream of you and every time I think of you I see the meaning of my life ... All this time that I have spent with you, although it has been little; I have discovered that I Love You ... "
_ "Leah ... do you want to be my girlfriend?"
_ "Yes" I said with tears and Dana smiled at me.
Steve sat on the furniture in my house and said something to Dana.
_ "What is it? What are they hiding from me?"
Steve brought out a beautiful gift box and from there he produced a beautiful yellow dress.
_ "It's beautiful" I said.
_ "Let's go to the bathroom so you can treat your dress" said Dana.
Dana helped me button my dress and when I came out Steve was looking at me in amazement.
_ "You look beautiful, the dress fits you very well." Said Steve
_ "Who was the one with the idea?" I said
_ "It was me" said Steve
_ "You gave the money and I took care of the dress" said Dana.
_ "Okay, Okay, we both had the idea."
_ "Leah ... how about we have our first date today?"
_ "Where would we go out?"
_" To the ice cream shop ."
_ "I think it is better that they do not go out together in public, that can cause problems." Said Dana
_ "Don't worry, I have everything under control." Said Steve
_ "Steve, don't go crazy" I told him.
_ "I'll be here watching until Leah arrives." Dana said although her face showed that she did not agree.
_ "Thanks Dana" I said.
We drove Steve's car until we got to a place far away.
_ "I know an ice cream parlor around here."
We got out of the car and I saw that the ice cream parlor was only for whites.
_ "Steve, I'm scared, I don't want to be hit."
_" I will protect you."
We both lined up and I tried to hide behind Steve until it was my turn in line.
_ "Get out of here, Black!" Said the ice cream man, a man of more or less his 74 years.
_ "Listen to me old man, you are going to serve her the ice cream that she asks or you will see them with me." He said raising his gun in a way that the other people at the ice cream shop didn't see.
_ "It's fine, it's fine" said the scared old man.
_ "What do you want love?" Said Steve.
_ "I want a vanilla ice cream" I said.
Steve had ordered a chocolate ice cream. We sat at one of the tables and when the other people saw me they left the ice cream parlor.
_ "How disgusting, there is a black woman here!" Said a woman.
_ "I do not return to this ice cream parlor." Said a man.
_ "I should not be here, they feel uncomfortable for me." I said.
_ "Just forget about them, they are ignorant" said Steve.
Then I see Steve approaching me and when we were about to kiss the police arrived.
