27 FEBRUARY, SATURDAY, CONTINUED
I darted straight to the garage to make sure I got a good spot to watch from. I didn't want to miss a thing.
For some reason, everyone on the porch decided to tag behind Ben as he half jogged over to the garage.
The night shutters were still drawn over the glass doors. Such a pity! Wouldn't it be a perfect sight if they had lifted it so that the cars would be lined up behind the glass doors like doughnuts in the shop window?
But because Dave had took one look at the cars and hadn't dared to touch anything else, much less unveil the new looks our cars now sported to the world, I had to wait for each beta to step into the garage and come to face with their own car before I could get the reaction I had been waiting for.
Ben stepped in first. He just stopped at the entrance, and then ran straight to the lambo, "What the f...! What's this s***!"
"I...I... It was like this when I got here." Dave managed to say weakly.
"Then why are you only telling me this now?" Ben yelled. He was livid. Poor Dave took a step back from the younger wolf.
"I only just got here myself." The warrior admitted, "I had to drive my mate and daughter..."
"I don't want to hear it." Ben snapped. His eyes never leaving his lambo.
Ki had rushed in when he heard the younger beta snap. I think he had meant to quickly do some damage control before Ben bit off Dave's head or anything drastic like that. But Ki stopped at the entrance too, his mouth dropped open, and his hand moved to slap his forehead. Hahaha. Now that wasn't something you'd see everyday.
"What happened?" Ki asked quite forgetting to remove the hand from the top of his head.
"Sam happened." Ben announced, dropping to his knees in front of his lambo, "Dammit Sam!"
I wished I had something to film this.
By now the other wolves had entered. And Harvey... Oh, poor Harvey. I almost felt sorry at his ashened expression when he walked up to his truck, "It will wash off, right?"
Harvey was taking this very quietly, but his jaw ticked.
"Oh, Sam!" Mum face palmed at the entrance when she stepped through with Dad.
Dad had to be the calmest wolf. His stoic expression didn't even twitch.
"It's a good thing we parked in the packhouse huh?" Beta Lucas jabbed Beta Gerald in the ribs.
Beta Gerald looked like he didn't quite know how to answer. He looked to the cars, then to his alpha, then to his son, and then back to the cars...it was like he was still trying to wrap his mind around what happened.
Lizzy and Savy gasped at the sight. Then Lizzy took out her phone and took a photo of her brother kneeling in front of the lambo. After that the three girls took selfies in front of the various cars. To their credit, they did try to do this unobtrusively, but they were giggling and my betas had to take pain to not notice.
Bell was clearly not amused. Hahahaha. Bell was so cute when he fumed like that. The other wolves instinctively gave him a wide berth. Who knew if the black curse radiating from him would spread?
"It smells like maple syrup." Harvey checked his truck very carefully, "The heating's melting it all off, so it'll be alright."
Harvey said this in the way a father might tell his mate that their child was going to pull through the night in a hospital.
"It's going to be alright." He repeated quietly to himself.
"F*** it!" Ben got up and kicked the tire of his lambo.
"The more immediate problem is the ceremony right now." Ki reminded everyone with a gentle smile.
"I'm not driving this." Bell flat out declared. Why? Pink and white sugar hearts not your thing, sweetie? Hee hee hee.
Ben finally looked up from his precious lambo to consider the other cars, he smirked at Bell's sweet white and pink ride parked right next to him, "That's proof is Sam right there. No one else would cover Luna Bell's car in hearts."
"Actually, I don't think anyone else would dare pull a stunt like this at all." Lizzy looked up from her phone to chip in, "This is epic!"
Yes, it was! I was so glad to have the girls be around to appreciate my hard work and take photographs of the most epic prank in Night Leaf history!
But Lizzy also made another good point. Our wolves won't even step on the Alpha's lawn out of respect. Who would dare sneak into his garage and prank the Alpha's Town Car, Luna Bell's favorite car, and ALL the young beta's rides?
Muahahahaha! I feel like such a rebel hero!
"We can't drive cars covered in candy to the Ceremony of the Departed." Ki decided with a sigh.
Wait, what? Did Ki say the Ceremony of the Departed? Omo.
That would explain the suits everyone was wearing this morning.
The Ceremony of the Departed was the send off ceremony for warriors who had died in battle. So that meant that we had lost some wolves. I mean, I kind of felt it, but it was only a vague feeling. I was hoping I had felt wrong, you know?
And wait, like it's right now? Uh oh.
"It'll take too long to clean up." Ben pointed out.
Oh no! Everyone's going to be late! That'll just be disrespectful! Now, I was starting to panic.
"Ki, can you stall the ceremony?" Luckily we had Harvey to calmly take charge, "Just for half an hour. We'll use the ply the twin Merces and arrive in separate cars instead of convoy."
"Easily. I'll have the hosts welcome the foreign guest and media briefing and then we will begin the march in with their comrade in arms with Alpha Kingsley being the last to arrive." Ki decided.
Which would be the opposite from the tradition where the Alpha was always first.
But I guess it would be better than arriving in a train of candy coated vehicles.
Wait, we had foreign guest and media? But we were BLUE! As in literally blue! Dad, Beta Lucas, Bell, Ki, Harvey, and Ben. Their blue stained faces and skin looked even more obvious against the white shirts they wore.
"Oh, Sam!" Mum mummured, almost prayerfully, "Please, if you can hear me, no more surprises."
Hahaha... okay, I hear you Mum. But you didn't have to tell me twice! Even I wouldn't mess around on a serious occasion like the Ceremony of the Departed.
You know, if you guys were planning a super serious ceremony with foreign guests and media in attendance to pay our last respects to our fallen warriors, the least you could've done was to inform me!
"Today is really going to be a pret-ty memorable ceremony." Lizzy said to Savy. But everyone heard her.
"It will be distinctive, for sure." Ki smiled like the flower to the sun.
Savy smiled, "At least, Sam looks like she's still having fun."
She was standing next to Mum again, so she leaned on Mum's arm, "Right? We don't have to worry."
Mum sighed, but a reluctant smile graced her lips, "Well, I suppose we could at least take comfort in that."
At this point, Sabre caught sight of me floating high above the exposed beams of the garage. She waved to me and covered her mouth to stifle a giggle. A few of the adults looked up, but I knew they saw nothing so I made faces and shook my butt till Sabre laughed out loud. Mum and Savy looked at the little girl, and then up at the ceiling. Dad and Beta Lucas realized too and looked. But of course they couldn't see me! I was a ghost! Hahaha.
Dave looked up too. He had been alternating between worry and confusion throughout, but I think this ceiling watching exercise was the last straw. He finally picked up the courage and asked, "Hey Ki, Is Sam... I mean, the alpha princess feeling better?"
Ki's smile never faltered, "She's still under strict orders to stay in bed, but as you can see, it appears she is still capable of some mischief."
"Alright, no. I did it." Ben rubbed his temple with one hand, he looked like it was the last thing he wanted to do, but he lied anyway, "I helped her do all this."
"To your own lambo?" Lizzy looked incredulous.
Yeah, no one was going to believe that! If you wanted to cover for me, you could've come up with something more believable! What kind of genius are you?
"It was on a dare." Ben managed.
"But the hearts were by your design, beta?" Bell smirked. Hahaha. Bell was so mean, "I cannot accept your feelings."
"Whatever Luna." Ben looked away, but he was starting to turn red under his collar.
"Well, since you did it. You clean it up later." Beta Lucas decided.
"Yeah, whatever." Ben shrugged.
Eh, wait, you guys can't possibly be buying Ben's lie, right? I looked at Dad and Bell. They had alpha wolves! It should be as clear as day that Ben was lying! Actually, with how crappy Ben's excuse was, even without a lie detector, it should be obvious!
Harvey patted Ben's shoulder, "Thanks for coming clean. I'll help you later. Let's just head out now."
Wait, how could any of you buy this bull? Wasn't it obvious that the culprit was me?
"Thanks Dave." Harvey waved a hand to the warrior who watched the entire charade open mouthed. This was when I realized that we were all performing for the audience of one.
Which meant that they were trying to keep the fact that I was a ghost underwraps from the other wolves!
I unzipped my backpack and launched one in Dave's face.
There was a moment. It was a very quick moment when everyone just held their breaths and froze in place.
Ha! I'd like to see you explain that!
"Ah, did I do that?" Ben asked in his usual heck-care attitude.
"Dave, you better go wipe off, change a shirt, and head down to the ceremony." Ki smiled like a flower to the sun, "We'll take care of this troublemaker."
"Ah, yes, beta." Dave quickly bowed. I think he was still stunned.
"It was a mark of honor!" Ben protested when Harvey thumped him quite hard on the shoulder.
Dave bowed before quickly making his escape.
"Do you really think he'll tell anyone?" Ben grumbled when Dave was well gone.
"Since it's Dave, every warrior will hear of your daring prank now, beta." Ki smiled.
Mum was mortified, "I'm so sorry, Ben!"
"It's no big deal, Luna." Ben brushed it off like some kind of hero.
Mum's mouth pressed in a straight line, "I can't believe she did this! Of all days! I'm not even sure I dare to leave her at home right now - I can't bear to think what we'd find when we get back!"
Sometimes, my Mum's imagination superseded my own. I dropped down to Sabre's level, "Tell Mum not to worry. I'm going to the ceremony too!"
I would have thought that would settle everything but the adults only thought of new things to worry about when they heard it.
"If she's there when we send off our departed warriors, what if she departs with them?" Beta Lucas asked.
The look on Mum's face!
I bolted before my parents tried to ground me, or some smart beta attempt to spirit bind me again. As a ghost, this was very easy to do. I just launched myself out of the garage and popped out above the Alpha House.
Let's see... I floated upwards for a bird's eye view of our town. We hadn't had one of these ceremonies since I was very little, but I've heard of the Memorial Hall for the Departed. It should be on the outskirts of town... quite near the school. I spied New Leaf Academy's tall clock tower. It should be that way!
