SHAY

Moments, they are considered precious. They make a person's memories worth remembering and sometimes reminisce on occasions.

Shay Zephanie mused on this thought as she caught the brief exchange between the dashing Detective and Avalyn.

She didn't hear anything, though. But she didn't have to. It was apparent with the way the two had been staring at each other.

What words can't say, the eyes can communicate. She remembered hearing that from somewhere.

It was actually cute watching Ava and her non-stoic expression.

They had been exposed and gotten used to hiding how they really felt. It was the kind of environment Marcus Zephanie's lab had imposed on them.

Mastering the art of having a stoic expression despite whatever you were really feeling or whatever you should actually feel was a strategy that Marcus Zephanie wanted her and Ava to have.

It was deception in the highest order.

She used to hate the idea, but eventually, Shay understood its great importance.

It was another thing she had to thank Marcus for.

Shay Zephanie mulled over Ava's progressive love life. She had found someone to love who was able to reciprocate that same feeling as well.

Shay Zephanie didn't believe in true love.

Or maybe she wasn't just as lucky as Ava.

Or maybe she just didn't have that capacity.

Or maybe, she lost that capability the moment she learned of her parent's deaths.

Shay Zephanie ducked her head as she pushed the door to Ava's room open. She was dressed in a nurse uniform with a surgical mask concealing her face. A medical trolley cart was aiding her disguise.

After Avalyn fainted from what she assumed was caused by the sudden shock of seeing her, the person in charge at the cashier in the snack center had somehow chosen that moment to reappear. She was left with no choice but to call for his attention and left him to seek help for Ava.

The first attempt wasn't successful.

But, Shay was somehow enjoying the roleplaying as a nurse for the second attempt of her mission.

Besides, she was able to see up close the young detective who had captured Ava's heart.

He was strikingly handsome with his deep blue eyes and blonde hair. He looked very manly. He must be regularly working out.

Or maybe it was part of the detective training.

He was undeniably very attractive despite his white-colored dress shirt being tainted with blood.

Avalyn seemed to have an exceptionally good taste in men though she was hardly aware of it.

Shay couldn't help but feel a little proud. They did share the same cells, after all.

She carefully took the syringe meant for Ava amongst the assortment of medicines on the trolley, giving it a gentle push and watched a tiny trickle of medicine drop from the needle.

She had seen Marcus doing it every time he was about to use the injection on her.

However, she never really understood what it was for. She still didn't even when she had just tried it herself.

"I'll put her to sleep for a while so she can rest." Shay Zephanie said, changing her voice a little and carefully avoided Avalyn's gaze.

She gently injected the drug into the IV drip, grateful that the mask hid the smirk spreading across her face.

In a few minutes, Avalyn would fall into a deep slumber, and when she awakes, she'll be watching Shay Zephanie claim her identity back.

The sound of the door opening abruptly broke Shay Zephanie's increasing mirth.

She found herself staring at a woman probably older than her for a few years with jet black hair and green eyes stumbling inside the room. Her evening gown had some noticeable blood stains on them.

Shay Zephanie assumed that she must be with the detective.

"Shay, I'm glad you're okay."

I am too. Shay Zephanie mentally answered.

"And I'm sorry to break your moment, but Rafael, your dad, who is surprisingly awake, is looking for you."

"Really?" She watched the detective's face light up with pure joy and relief.

At that moment, Shay Zephanie wished that she had news like that to be overjoyed with upon hearing. Sadly, there was no possibility of that ever happening to her.

"Really."

"Go, Rafael. I'll be here. I'm not going anywhere." Ava faintly murmured, her eyelids were beginning to droop. The drug was working.

"I'll be back." Shay Zephanie watched another exchange of unbridled displays of affection between the detective and Avalyn.

Detective Oliver gave Ava's hand a brief squeeze before taking his leave with the newcomer.

Once they were alone, Shay Zephanie finally removed her mask, causing Ava to helplessly fight the drug's effects upon seeing her for the second time around.

"I'm sorry, Ava, but I'm on a mission. Don't worry, though. I'm not here to send you back to Marcus. He would have taken you back himself if that was the case." She paused, letting out a satisfied sigh.

"Anyways, this is all for a good cause. I promise." Shay Zephanie hovered over Avalyn's half-conscious and powerless form lying on the bed.

"I'll even take care of your charming detective. I pledge that no harm will ever come to him. You have my word." As Ava slowly fell victim to the effects of the sleeping drug, the power went out on cue.

Shay Zephanie didn't waste any moment and began the arduous task of lifting Ava off the bed, dragging her out of the room. She then fetched for the spectacle goggles embedded with night-vision lenses on her nurse uniform's pocket.

She carefully trudged through the dark hallway.

I'm sorry, Ava. Shay Zephanie mused, hoping that Avalyn will understand why she had to do this when the time comes.

She was telling the truth though when she told her that this was for a good cause.

It was.

It is.

Upon reaching the elevator, Shay Zephanie looked towards the ceiling, where she knew a camera was hidden and was connected to where her associate was watching all of this from the safety of his hiding place.

"Mission success. She's all yours." She said, knowing he was listening and most likely was dying of anticipation.
