By sundown, the Castle gates were closed and all exits secured. Finding a way out was not going to be easy. In the kitchen, the master cook chopped vegetables for a large stew and the resident baker pulled scones out of the hot stone oven, but no one else existed in the room constructed to feed hundreds. Each slice of the knife and every clatter of the pot echoed in the cavernous room. It was much the same in the rest of the massive castle. The population which had once been in the hundreds was now reduced to less than a few dozen. It made Katreena shiver as it was more like a tomb rather than a home.
Roy and Katreena walked quietly in the shadows of the hallway, careful not to be seen as they searched for an inconspicuous exit.
"I have a thought of how we might get the gates open and have a distraction as well," Katreena whispered to Roy.
