In the blinding blackness, chains rattled and cracked as light poured in through a gap in the wall, drawing a breeze into the confinement.
"Finally," Lyolis thought, seeing the torchlight glow from a town off in the distance. "Fresh air …"
Bones cracked as she commanded the host to turn his neck. Their confinement was surrounded by purplish flowers that hardly hid the rank she'd been smelling for the last few hours.
She thought, That's what the Mayor's been using them for …
Ahead of her, the twisted, rotting bodies stumbled towards the breach. Bodies jerking. Heads snapping right and left. Coming through the tunnel, they walked with no control.
Lyolis summoned her being, pushing energy into each limb. It wasn't like controlling one's body, but like trudging limbs through mud. Arms and legs slow to jerk with each command.
They escaped their confinement. Lyolis felt the night's chill against the warmth in her hosts skin. Strange, she thought. Everything against her flesh numb to the touch.
Lyolis blinked, her eyes glossy like staring through foggy lense. Her lungs seemed to have gone, unable to feel air passing inside while the heartbeat she had was silent. The only thing that seemed to be working was her consciousness.
Right leg. Left leg. Right leg. Left leg. I think I'm getting the hang of this ...
Lyolis was picking up speed. Wind whispering in her air, so low it was nearly hushed.
The lights in the distance bobbed with her limp head. The muscles as though they'd been removed; she whipped her head and it flopped to the right, eyes falling toward the dirt.
Come on you worthless thing … Her aggravated thoughts did nothing to help the situation.
She no longer fought the weight of head, focusing her energy on each limb. Fighting against the force that held them to the ground. She yelled, a screech echoed off in the canyon.
Right leg. Left leg. Right leg. Left leg—
She hardly felt the stone and her body collapsed. Limbs flailing as the body hit the ground. The impact soft as landing on a bed of bear fur. This is strage, she thought. I feel almost … impenetrable.
As she pushed off the ground, her eyes caught a small pool of water in the earth; an odd reflection staring back. She screamed though a screech filled the air, then yanked herself backward. Breathing heavy, she found confidence and crawled towards the pool, gandering.
Her reflection had gone, and four soulless black eyes glared at her. Two from the bear-head crown
and two from the blotchy, black face from the host she controlled. Mouthing hanging, half broken. Teeth chipped, black, and jagged.
"Yikes." The face twisted, still glaring with horror. "I can't imagine what he did to you … but I'm sure you didn't deserve a fate such as this."
Loud pops and cracks came from her body as she wobbled, leaning from hip to hip, climbing to her feet. Feeling as though she'd expelled twice the energy she would've in her own body. A few hard whips, and her head fell to the right shoulder, giving her sight on the building. She stumbled forward.
Beneath her moccasins was a faint rattle. The earth trembling. How hard, she was uncertain though it grew in strength as a husky, heavy noise broke the silence. She kept still, hoping the darkness would conceal her—
There was a roar, and a smack to her back. Lyolis host twirled through the air, limbs whipping. Deafening snaps and cracks were heard on impact. She hardly felt it. Like a pinch and soft blow to the body.
The beast whipped its paw, flipping her to her back. Daggered fangs and drool sliming her face. Two, large black-rounded eyes looking into her own. She recognized the pair. A second grizzly stood on it's feet, looming, and peering down upon her.
Droom … Brylax … it's me!
Only a garble of hisses and screeches came from the creature's mouth.
The bear stretched it's jaws, extending them wide, placing them over her blotchy face. A reddish-black tongue swimming in his mouth.
Suddenly the beast pulled back, snout pointed towards the town. Lip rising and quivering. Baring fangs and producing deep, heavy snarls. Dust kicked up around the beasts and they were gone.
Lyolis kept the host on it's back, staring at the stars sparkling in the lilac-black cloak above. It was rare the night was so clear, haunting, and beautiful. Like it was meant for her.
Three loud blasts and blood-curdling hollar echoed from the town.
From the ground, Lyolis pushed energy through her limbs. Rising from the earth. Body tweaking and jerking to their feet. It took extra effort, shifting the body to face the glowing orbs around the boxy wooden structures.
A silhouette moved towards her; brownish cloud swirling at their back. Rising up into the sky. Feet pounding on the ground. "Help!" A boy screamed, chunk missing from his cheek. "They're coming—" He halted a few paces away, corking his head. Eyes trembling. "What the hell … happened to you." He didn't wait around to find out, running towards the canyon tunnels, taken into the darkness.
Lyolis moved the creatures limbs once more. The right leg cracking with each step, making her bob more than normal. She didn't feel the pain that accompanied a broken limb. Only a dull ache, pressure and a pinch.
