Chương 3: Aftermath
Emily and her grandmother spent the rest of the night at the fire department. The firemen saw them in tears and asked them to stay the night, well aware of their loss.
The next morning was a Monday. Emily was supposed to go to school, but, once again, she couldn't hide her sorrow. Instead, they were told to prepare for a funeral; that of Emily's grandfather. It was this that brought back the most painful memories for both Emily and her grandmother.
"Does it have to be so soon?" whispered Emily to her grandmother.
"I'm afraid so. Are you okay with that?" She questioned in a calming voice.
"Of course not. I'll never be ready to say goodbye to him. I...I just want more time... with him. I need him Grandma." Emily's grandmother let out a sigh.
"Did you know, when we were young, he used to call me Daisy?"
"Mmmmm." Emily was half asleep.
"We were newlyweds. He said that my blond hair atop a great big ballgown wedding dress resembled a daisy." She let out a small chuckle, as did Emily.
"I hope you find a love as great as him one day."
"Grandma, we've talked about this." There was a slight bit of annoyance in her voice.
Emily's Grandmother chuckled. "Yes, dear. I figured it was worth a try."
They both laughed for a bit, but their joy was interrupted when Emily asked, "Grandma?"
"Yeah?"
"What are we going to do now? I mean we have no home, no clothes, no money. H-how are we even going to pay for a proper funeral? "At this Emily sat up straight, grabbing her sweater tight once again.
"I'll figure it out, dear. Don't you worry. Maybe you could move into the city. You won't have trouble getting a job there after you finish up your studies. Maybe even make a few friends."
"I-I... guess that's not... a terrible idea. I think I left my wallet in the truck, so, I have my credit card."
"Mmmmmmmm. Sounds like a plan to me. Why don't I take you house hunting after this whole... situation calms down."
"Sure." Emily said, partially sarcastic. "But first, let's find you a nice hotel, a bank to get money, clothes, and I will go back to school on Thursday. Okay?"
"Perfect."
