In fact, General Rochester was one of the main reasons President Hancock was able to achieve the standing he is at today.
Country A had a 'democratic' but also a meritocratic governmental system.
The president was chosen by congress, who were, in turn, selected by the people. Every four years, there would be a new election, and if the current president won against all of the competitors, he could run again. Technically, one man could even be president for life as there was no limit of years that he could run.
When Mr. Hancock ran for president, he was not a very popular candidate among the various polities, even as he was looked well upon by the citizens.
General Rochester, on the other hand, had many impressive achievements in the military and was considered to be one of the most powerful men in the country. As Hancock's best friend, General Rochester had used all of his power to support him.
You see, the government of Country A was very corrupt in that the citizens' opinions did not matter much, and as long as you had the right connections to the right people, you were guaranteed to have a high governmental position if wanted.
So when the young Rochester threatened that he would retire if his friend was not chosen for president, the government was backed into a corner and could only grit their teeth.
In truth, the president's position would only be a show, and he did not have a lot of power, so the government felt it wasn't too big of a sacrifice.
The people who truly controlled Country A were top officials who had people from the military and the government. These people kept their positions through their showcased intelligence and merits. In fact, Mr. Rochester's father was part of that group.
Aware of this point, General Rochester had asked his friend why he wanted such a trashy position so badly. Hancock was vague and had just said that it was his lifelong dream.
Thinking back now, Mr. Rochester felt that it was foolish to willingly sacrifice so much for Hancock. He even had a falling out with his family over the matter.
But what was done was done.
The man heaved a sigh as he noticed the wrinkles on his left hand that were not as visible before.
He looked at his daughter that sat across from him, trying to guess what she was thinking so hard about— well, he would never be able to imagine it.
Eyrie was cursing about how carefree she was in her past life.
Because she didn't care about what was going on around her besides what she saw in front of her, Eyrie didn't know why her family flew down the ranks, why they had to go into hiding, and why Fei do what she did… etc.
Basically, she doesn't know how the future will go, even though she was reborn.
She doesn't know if something will happen to the president, nor if he was someone that her family could trust.
She doesn't know if her father's theory about the president's ownership of Fei was true.
Eyrie pursed her lips. Now wasn't the time to think about that! She needed to stop her father's plan!
"But even then, Father, wouldn't it be alright to keep Feixin since she is a mutant, not a success? Mutants have their own emotions, and if Feixin grows attached to the Rochester family, she won't harm us, right?"
As he listened, Mr. Rochester smiled bitterly and shook his head. "It's not that simple."
Eyrie's heart skipped a beat. She waited for her father to continue.
"Mutants are not easy to control because we are not sure what they are capable of. Even with countless experiments, the scientists in charge reached inconclusive results for the most part."
"Mutants aren't like successes, which are basically robots with a spice called human characteristics added to them. These entities are like reanimated human life that had their stats raised."
"And humans are difficult to control – intelligent humans are even harder. You never know what they might do. Despite all that, though, they can be controlled – at least to some extent – by their master."
"As to what extent, we don't know. Every mutant that has been tested show varying degrees of obedience."
"In addition, Feixin is a prototype. It's the first mutant to be ever created, and there might be some problems with her that scientists have not figured out about. For example, if she suddenly recovers memories of her past from before she became a mutant, or she goes berserk. These are all terrifying possibilities."
"And since the Rochester family isn't Feixin's master, we can't do anything to control her when she goes out of her own control."
At this point, Mr. Rochester stopped for a second and drank a gulp of water from a glass cup that had appeared beside him at some point in time.
"Do you understand, Eyrie?" His voice had become low and gentle. It was apparent that the water he had downed soothed his throat tremendously.
Eyrie didn't answer. Her hands that were folded in her lap had subconsciously furled into fists.
"Why did you tell me this?" When she finally spoke, her voice was hoarse.
Her father looked at her deeply. "I am not a fool, Eyrie. I can see that all my children have become especially attached to that mutant. I wanted at least your approval of this matter before I proceeded."
The man paused. "Please try to slowly convince the rest of the children, would you? I'm sure they wouldn't listen to a word I say." He let out a bitter chuckle.
"You said you wanted my approval, father?" Eyrie glanced down and slowly unfurled her fists.
"Yes."
"Well, I disapprove."
When the young woman looked up to meet her father's eyes, her face was firm, as if she wouldn't blink an eye even when the world shattered.
Wow! Now that's a lot of information! What are some of your opinions on what a mutant is? Do you think Fei is dangerous?
And wow. Just look at Eyrie! thumbs up to her!
