In this game's context, a task is essentially a contract. A typical task usually involves an NPC issuing a task, which is essentially a contract. The player helps the NPC accomplish something and then receives a reward.

Even more interestingly, players can also issue tasks that can be picked up by NPC adventurers or other players. The most common scenario is when a player enters a small city after reaching level ten.
