Chương 11: First Night

There were birds chirping.

I had only ever heard the faintest of noise from animals when I was in my cave, all animals either froze in fear or ran from being anywhere near me. I sighed with relief. I could actually conceal my aura. First I was frozen with confusion, but even though I knew what was happening, I dared not move from where I was. It was such a pleasant melody that I had never got to hear. Eventually I heard even more noises, animals foraging near me, the wind sighing through the leaves in the trees, and the never-ending chorus of chirping. 'I am very glad I put in all that effort to hide my aura' I thought. Admiring the ambience in the forest, I walked silently between the trees, searching for a place to rest.

It was after the sun had set and the birds stopped calling that I found my bed. It was a small clearing with some tall grass. Seeing that it was unoccupied, I curled up in it. It was very nice and bouncy and it might have been itchy to others, but I couldn't feel it through my scales. As I lay down on my new, comfortable bed, I cast a magic barrier to protect myself, before listening to the sounds of the night as I fell asleep.

Suddenly I woke. I didn't normally sleep lightly and I would only wake up when something interesting was happening. I opened my golden eyes and watched my surroundings, seeking out what had woken me. Soon, I heard some twigs snap and grass rustle, it seems something was running around near my bed. 'It must be something being hunted. Whatever is chasing it is making a lot less sound.' I silently concluded as I looked into the depths of the forest. I was slightly curious, but I didn't want to get up because I was really comfortable, so I didn't. I just lifted my head and stared between the trees, wanting to see what was happening. Even if the darkness affected other beings, it certainly couldn't conceal anything from me.

After scanning for a bit, I finally saw what had disturbed my sleep. A small person with pointed ears was running haphazardly through the forest, panting heavily with tears streaming down their face. I raised my eyebrows in surprised, I hadn't expected to see an elf so soon. However, I didn't want to disrupt the natural order of things, or get out of bed, so all I would do is kill them quickly if they got caught and couldn't escape. Thinking this, I looked for what was chasing the child, until finding my answer in a dark black fox. I hadn't seen it before so I used Inspect

Huh? How does it know Illusion magic without all the basic affinities I needed for it? Maybe it is a species trait, like how I always had small affinities with every basic magic, and a huge affinity with air magic. If so, that is very convenient. With its description, I can roughly guess how this happened. The young elf was out at night when he shouldn't have been for some reason, was able to dodge the shadow fox's first attack by luck but had then recognized it as something he was too weak to defeat, and started running. Luckily, he had enough sense not to scream, as that would have killed him even faster; if his scream woke me up I would definitely have instantly killed him. But seriously, I woke up for a lousy show like this? What a waste of my time. Dissatisfied, I put my head back down and try to fall to sleep, only to hear the one thing I really didn't want to.

That annoying elf was running towards me.

He definitely saw me, then ran straight towards me. What is this idiot thinking? I realized my magic barrier wouldn't stop him, as he probably didn't have any ill will towards me, which only made me more exasperated. Finally stumbling into the clearing, the elf jumped over my back, landing almost on my head. This did not improve my image of him. I slowly opened my eyes while staring at him with clear hostility.

"Help me! Kill that thing chasing me!" he yelled, panting. "What are you waiting for you beast! Kill it already!"

...This guy. I said I wouldn't make him suffer but this is too much, even for me.

"I know you're awake! You should get to helping me already!"

Whaaa? He actually believed I had any reason to help him? The person who woke me up, ordered me to do something for no reason, expects me just to do it? I won't kill for no reason, but why, why would I ever have any reason to help you? I don't even know who you are yet! I'll use Inspect immediately.

So maybe I got my assumption of what happened wrong? It seems this guy went out of his way to hurt that shadow fox, which is now growling while limping around the outside of my bed, failed to kill it in one hit, then immediately fled. The only reason he is still alive is that he was able to damage the fox's leg, making it run a lot slower. Now he was trying to use his skill on me? Luckily I'm too powerful for it to affect me, but this guy is so rude!

"What are you still lying there for? Are you scared? I heard that dragons are strong! Get up already and save me!" He was practically screaming at me now. 'How entitled can one be?' I thought, before finally making my move.

"Now you get up? Finally you useless heap of scales! Kill that thing already!" he had an evil grin on his face, and I despised it.

The first thing I did was neatly cut out his vocal cords and pull them from his neck, so he finally shut up. Even though I made sure to avoid the major arteries, there was still quite a lot of blood, but he doesn't seem to have felt the pain yet, and I have no plans on letting him die quickly. He had an astonished look on his face, before he turned angry and opened his mouth to say something, while trying to kick my leg. Just after he kicked me, he realized he couldn't say anything, looked at the slimy things in my claws, before touching his neck as his face went pale. He then promptly fainted, which only made me more angry. I cast a dark magic curse on him, so that whenever he falls asleep (or faints) he will hear wails of pain. He probably lived an easy life killing animals, and he probably also wasted a lot of what he killed. This might have been to much, but I was tired. Grabbing the now awake child by the hair, i threw him before the shadow fox, before bathing both my hands in fire to cleanse them. With my fit of anger over, I went back to sleep with an extra soundproof magic barrier.

The next morning, I remembered what had occurred the previous night. In hindsight I totally overreacted, I had no idea how he acted normally. However, considering how rude he was, it was coming to him sooner or later. Similar redundant excuses filled my mind as I looked into the sky, which was a lot clearer than yesterday. As I finally prepared myself to take off, I saw a familiar face at the edge of my clearing. It was that shadow fox from last night. In the light of day I saw that it was a beautiful dark grey colour, with jet black eyes. All it did was nod its head at me, before walking back into the forest. 'At least someone round here has manners' I thought while preparing to take off again.

Soon I was in the air flying northwards again, above the sparse clouds, trying to forget what had happened the previous night.
