He began thinking about the thing he could build at the city, 'What could I build at the city? House? Farmland? Wall?'
He honestly didn't know what to build. He felt there is nothing he could build anymore at his settlement. He began thinking about advice to ask Sean, 'I should just ask him normally, it seems'
And so, he does just as his mind told him to, "Father, I want an advice, what could I build or improve at my land, I felt my settlement have already been so good"
Sean, his father-in-law, just smile lightly and began relaxing his back at his chair. There is a moment of silence as he thought about advice to give to his son-in-law in front of him.
Sean gathered his courage and his wisdom to strike Arden with advice that is best for him. He said to him, "Arden, your settlement might be good, but the other settlements may not be that good"
Arden raised one of his eyebrows and asked to him, "Father, what do you mean? I couldn't quite understand what you are saying"
It took him a moment to think about the best way to explain it to Arden, once he was done, he continued his words, "You always focused on your main settlement, but you haven't improved the other one at your lands… simply, your city may full of happy people, but the other city in your land might not have the same fate, I suggest you give the local lord funds to improve living condition on the land they take care of"
Arden stared at Sean for a few seconds in silence before getting what he is trying to say. He nodded and both of them began discussing about how much funds were going to give to the local nobles.
"How much should I give them? I don't even know their numbers and needs" He said bluntly to his father-in-law and both of them sighed.
"Let me get a book, I listed such information in there" He then stood up and began walking his way out of the room.
Arden stared at him as he left the room, and once he lost sight of him, he began relaxing himself while drinking the tea on the table. That's when a boy came to his side and began touching him by his hand.
He startles after seeing someone touched him unexpectedly when he is drinking his tree. He choked on the tree and coughed for a bit before quickly poured the tea back to the cup from his mouth.
The boy looked at him confused and stood there while tilting his head for a few seconds. That's when he realized he has done something that startled Arden.
Almost immediately, the boy began sweating nervously and stared at Arden in fear of getting scolded. The other children began gesturing him to come back and hide behind the wall.
Before he could do that, Arden placed the tea at the table and looked beside him and saw the child. While not losing his cool, he smiled at him and said, "Do you need anything young one?"
The boy was trembling until he looked at Arden's face. He quickly calmed down after seeing the adult in front of him was not mad after what he has done.
He stood there silently for a few seconds before saying some stuff while stuttering, "Si-sir, I-I want to be li-like you!"
Arden seeing this, just have some warmth coming up in his heart and simply began smiling at him. He thought about the best thing to say to the young padawan.
While making the answer in his head, his mind suddenly took a turn, generating 'Just tell him to come to your castle and make him your page!'
Before he could stop his mouth to say it, he already began saying it, "Come to my castle, I'll make you a page"
He quickly closed his mouth after realizing it's not a good thing to say to him. It was already too late as the boy bluntly said to him, "Great idea! I'll be bringing my friend! There are about 8 of them!"
He slowly retracts his hand from his mouth and smiled at him nervously. The boy soon ran back to his friend and at the right moment, Sean came back with a book at his hand.
He sat down at his chair and began reading the book to Arden loudly. "There were around 38 people in charge of power in your land, around 26 of them were Baronets and all of them were knights, the rest is what we called weaker nobles, they were more powerful than the 26 baronets but still a knight"
Arden heard every word as Sean was reading information written on the book. He began thinking about something, 'I should just give the weaker nobles funds to improve conditions!'
That's when Sean continued on his words, Arden quickly removed any thoughts from his mind and continue hearing what his father-in-law was saying, "The weaker nobles here took care of the settlements and the baronets lived on them, most of them tried helping the one above them to take care of town and villages"
His father stopped and took a sip from his cup of tea before saying to him, "We should give the money to the weaker nobles and let them take care of the rest with the help of the Baronets"
Arden nodded understanding what need to be done and began doing the maths in his head, 'If there are 38 of people in charge of power in my land and there is 26 Baronets, there should be around 12 weaker nobles, I have around 3500 Aurens. I'll save 500 of them in case of emergency and 3000 divided to 12 is 250 Aurens for each of them, I hope this is enough to make some improvement'
He prayed at his head, hoping it would be enough to make improvements in his land. Afterwards, he began explaining his plan to his treasurer.
"So, I'll leave 500 Aurens in case of emergency and each weaker nobles will be getting 250 Aurens to make improvements in the land they take care of" Sean raised both of his eyebrows.
His eye immediately widens after hearing Arden saying this. He quickly calming himself down but Arden saw his expression, while filled with confusion, Arden asked Sean.
"What is with that expression? Is the fund not enough?" Sean began laughing and Arden sat at his face while raising one of his eyebrows.
It took Sean a few minutes for himself to calm himself down and as soon as he calmed down, he said, "You have changed much, son. That's maybe a little bit not enough, but it is for the experienced one. I remembered dropping my jaw seeing your financial mistake, I can teach you if you want!"
Arden was confused, he didn't know what mistake he made at the past. That's when it strikes his mind, 'he is right! Making farmlands won't need 100, it probably need 30 at most!'
He was about to turn red, embarrassed on what he has done at the past, that's when another thought strikes his mind, 'Well, I didn't regret it, the worker did the works so fast and the overall living condition improved, my people become wealthy and in the end, they gave me more money in taxes!"
After he thought about this, he quickly noticed something wrong with the thing his treasurer said, 'it's weird for him to say that, considering the improvement made in only 4 years after I started taking over'
He quickly turns his vision to his treasurer and Sean could visibly be seen smirking. That's when he realized that his treasurer was doing it to test his confidence in his choice.
Arden quickly grinned and said to him, "You got me there! I don't regret my decision, in fact, I'm proud of them!"
Sean laughed loudly like once he did earlier and calmed down, then he said to Arden, "You are right! With more funds, you can make it faster, some nobles didn't do this though, they just collect the money and pass it down to their generation which will be gone in like a month or so, I'm proud to have you as my son and my lord"
His treasurer and at the same time, his father-in-law said this. He immediately smiled upon hearing this and was surprised the old man would actually say this thing.
He looked at the condition outside and noticed the cloud was turning red from all their talking. He took a sip from his tea upon seeing this and make his decision to talk about more things with the person in front of him.
Considering he hasn't talked to him for a long time. He remembered their first encounter with the person in front of him, which is also the first encounter with the woman he loved right now.
That's when he raised his head to see the face of his treasurer, and he only sees black everywhere.
