Explosions rang out from afar, from ahead. Venator and the general walked towards the edge, moving soldiers aside to see what the cause was.
From the view Venator could see the full scale of what was happening. Enemy soldiers began pillaging any intact house, burning others while civilians were dragged out as they brought out food and wealth. Near the destroyed gate and torn down walls, mages were entering inside the area followed by cavalry and soldiers, quickly they began joining in the pillaging of the area. Soldiers stood atop the still stable walls, killing any remaining soldier while taking everything from the area.
Few Bellunamien soldiers outside the cathedral were killed quickly as the mages burned any homes that still stood. The entire area below was overrun, Venator and the kingdom's army were surrounded, outnumbered, and on the verge of death.
"More mages, Bellunamien wasn't kidding when he said they had an army of them." Venator thought to himself.
"The place is overrun, never have i seen such destruction on the capital. No wonder they focused heavily on anything that wasn't the capital beforehand, even if they had the opportunity to strike. Venator." He turned towards Venator, "We'll need to try and push back the enemy, despite their numbers and the mages heading forward, we need to break out of here and try to reclaim the capital. We'll have to start with taking back the square beneath us, the king's royal guard and our remaining forces will support and hold the area once we retake it." The man explained, Venator listened attentively.
"Sir!" A voice yelled, behind the general a soldier stood.
"The wall that was formed at the foot of the stairwell has been broken, they're beginning to charge towards us." Immediately the man rushed to the wall of shields, Venator ran behind with his hands still burning.
"Ready Venator?" The man parted the shields, letting Venator through to stand in front of the rapidly moving wave of enemies. The wall quickly closed up behind.
Anger concentrated within him, the fire became brighter as it rested in his hands.
In a single second, the streaks flew quick, crashing into the front soldiers below as it began passing through ranks, stopping at the bottom of the stairway. Immediately their armor and clothing were set alight in bright blue.
Immediately shrieks and cries filled the atmosphere, soldiers running all around, even jumping off to hit the ground underneath. Soldiers on the ground stopped in their tracks at the sight of the spewed flame, moving back at the sight of Venator, moving back as their brethren began running back, consumed in the bright hot fire.
Venator stepped down the stairway, now cleared with bodies scattered around, charred and dead. Behind him the shield wall began advancing, slowly expanding as they began moving to the side of the stairs.
A volley of arrows were launched towards them, in seconds, Venator quickly formed a dome above him as more soldiers raised their shields up. The volley struck both, slamming hard as they struck.
As the volley ceased, he snapped his fingers, starting to run down the stairs with droves of soldiers awaiting him.
"More runts to send to the god." In seconds upon stepping onto the ground, fire spewed towards the surrounding soldiers. Striking the buildings near them as it raged on, soon the place was beginning to clear up with more charred corpses. Soldiers from behind descended down, starting to take point and forming walls in any alley or pathway present.
Venator turned to the cautious enemies on his side, now trying to defend themselves after the the attack's failure. With energy left within him, he released fire towards the crowd, quickly they began running back at the sight of blue fire darting through more and more soldiers, hundreds ran around in pain, quickly clearing the square and leaving piles of bodies.
Soldiers rapidly ran to any open pathway, sealing them in a wall of large rectangular shields. More left the cathedral's area, descending down the steps to support.
The enemy regrouped back, staring down each wall from a distance as they readied their weapons to try and breach. Soldiers carrying pike stood behind the shields.
"That worked quiet well, perhaps there can be a trusted mage." The man stood behind him.
In seconds after he spoke, fire began crashing down upon the shield wall in front of them, soldiers frantically raised their shields up while still trying to hold the line behind their brothers in arms.
Atop a building, a mage stood with both hands pointed down, spewing
Swiftly, Venator threw an orb of fire at the attacking mage. As it dissipated upon impact, the mage fell back, knocked down with the flames ceasing. Shields slowly went back down, soldiers returned to facing the mass of fighters in front of them.
"We need to take out that mage." The man spoke.
Venator ran towards the building, a plan quickly formed in his head as both hands held ice and frost.
"Hope this works, because this is a rather odd idea I'm about to try."
At the foot of the building, Venator aimed his hands down. In a split second, a pillar began forming beneath him, slowly rising upwards. Venator stumbled on the pillar, nearly slipping.
Upon reaching the top, he found the mage, crawling away with a large burn wound on his chest.
Venator leaped from the pillar, landing onto the rooftop. From the view he could see as larger crowds of fighters stood around near the walls.
He took out his sword. Nearing the mage, Venator drove the blade into the mage's back, killing him quick.
"A single mage down, but there's probably a hundred or more among those fighters." He looked from the rooftop view he looked at the capital around him, enemy fighters walking all around, from the gates to near the square. Buildings burned with many already crumbling while more fighters carried different treasures with them to the outside.
"Roofs do give a good view of the enemy. Perhaps I can use them for an advantage." Another plan quickly formed in Venator's mind. Sheathing his blade he returned to using flame.
