Chương 48: VIP in danger

2 days ago, Barda had done what nobody else on the planet could. He had taken a walk around the enemy's camp without being detected. Anyone seeing him would have thought he was a god, but the point was not to be seen. He had taken off with an important document, one that held critical information about the enemy plans.

The collection of dignitaries of Tristan had all read the same document, one lifted from Commander Dana's tent. The piece of information in the document had been simple: The prince of Gumina had enlisted the help of the Frigid Pirate Group.

The Frigid Pirate Group!

A name that had caused many maritime merchants to shudder in fear. The overlords of the sea. Where they showed up, blood and death followed. They moved around raping and pillaging without anyone stopping them, but that was in the Eastern continent.

In the Western continent, they were not so free to move around. The Gumina Kingdom was not the only power in the west, which was why the west was so heavily contested. The powers in the west were extremely overbearing.

It had been a mystery as to why the west had not invaded the Eastern continent despite its disjointed power system. Of course, such questions could only be asked by scholars and a few with the power and knowledge of both. The true powers knew the reason why and kept away.

The Gumina kingdom was a new power. They were dazzling and spectacular, but they were new to influence, they didn't have the knowledge that the old hands had, and were too arrogant to seek out such knowledge. I am getting ahead of myself, hold on.

Despite them being a new power, they were still a great force to reckon with. Where the Frigid Pirate group was an insurmountable force in the East, they were summoned by the Gumina Kingdom and weren't offered a chance to refuse.

After the prisoners ran off, the commander had discovered that her documents had been missing. Since Barda didn't want to show that he knew exactly which document to take, he had grabbed a few. This left a trail that made the commander highly suspicious. Her greatest suspect was that someone in her organization was a traitor, having orchestrated the escape and aided the archer. This was exactly what Barda wanted her to think.

The upside was that he had gotten in her head all the more. Barda did not know this, but in her nightmares, someone opens the door to her chambers for the archer to come in. Try as she might she does not see the face as it is shrouded in mist. What she does see it this person dressed in the Gumina garb, indicating he or she is one of her own.

The downside was that since she was on high alert, the commander had responded by changing the plans at the last minute. Instead of having the pirates attack at the gate from the ocean as planned, they were to assist in taking down the force sent to eliminate the temporary base.

This may have been good news to the city, not so much for Barda. With the pirates entering the fray, everything seemed to get dicey. Barda looked around. He could see Batoo and a few others he had come with including Sten. They were still in the fight, but barely. With how much they had been overwhelmed, they could barely find a chance to fire an arrow.

By now, there was only one catapult remaining. Since it had been the focus of most of the offensive fire, it would soon fall. That would put them all in a hard place since they would be without any proper shelter from the rain of arrows that kept coming at them.

The pirate group was closing the distance. Barda took the time to look at the numbers.

[4,896 pirates approaching 131 meters North North West of current location]

[17,654 enemies soldiers approaching 329 meters South South West of current location]

[1,292 allies in host's renitue]

[18,351 allies supporting from 176 meters due East of the current location.]

Seeing this, Barda knew they would receive the brunt of the pirate attack before their side could offer any support. He didn't wait for an invitation. "Spear!" Barda shouted, one was thrown his way. He caught it midflight and charged his steed with only one target in mind.

It was then that Barda remembered that once long ago, he had learned a spear technique from observing an opponent. He remembered just how excited he had been at the knowledge that he could learn by observing.

Not to brag but right now, Barda didn't need that skill. After his trip around the library, he had picked up quite a number showing how to use a spear. They were ranked based on their complexity. Having picked up all that, Barda was a combat king with a plethora of combat techniques usable across multiple weapons. He had all the knowledge Tristan city and its history had to offer, such knowledge should not be scoffed at.

Raising his spear, Barda met the oncoming army like a god of war, unafraid of the horde rushing at him. The steed did as it was bid, running with fury, building up its momentum to counter the coming pirates.

The pirates' frontal group also rode on horses as well, and as they came, they brought momentum with them. Barda braced himself for what was going to be a hard hit as the hundreds of horses and horsemen in plate armor came bearing down at him.

Perhaps because he had not been in this body for long enough, Barda could be forgiven for underestimating himself. He forgot just how much power he bore and how destructive he was as a person. His steed was following his orders as all horses do, when afraid, they run.

The reason for this was that when the 2 forces met each other, Barda had expected the opposing forces to cause him quite a headache. Unexpectedly, he tore through the defenses like a hot knife through butter, decimating everything that lay in his wake.

With his spear weaving through his enemies like a snake, every stab reaped a life as Barda swept past the enemies. He didn't even need the skills and techniques he had learned, but that didn't mean he didn't use them.

To familiarize himself, Barda used a plethora of spear skills and horseback fighting techniques. The pirates around him were good practice, but they were too slow to offer him any challenge. By just his reaction speed alone, he was leagues above anyone on the battlefield. The best comparison would be using a balloon to practice basketball skills. Yeah, you'll get it right but that's cause it not much of a challenge.

While Barda frolicked in the battle, bringing death everywhere he went, Sten could only stare breathlessly at the work his dear teammate had done. He had heard the man was good at swordplay and had witnessed firsthand the man's archery skills. Now he was seeing his awe-inspiring spear skills. He couldn't fathom just how deep the well that was Barda went. The most shocking thing was that the man did not look a day over 25 years, saying he was aged 23 was a stretch.

[Critical Incident Alert: VIP in danger]

Barda had various subroutines in place that was continuously running in the background even without him actively monitoring them. It was one of these subroutines that had given him the alert. Given the alert had come while he was in battle mode, it had to be important.

By now, Barda was not actively paying attention to the war. At some point, the gore gets to you. Luckily, he had a machine that could take over with robotic precision while he focused on other things. At the time, he had been analyzing the battle using this 3D map when the notification rang out.

He quickly clicked on it to view what it was all about. On seeing the alert content, Barda instantly changed direction while he weaved his way through a group of pirates who thought they were lucky enough to evade him. He didn't stop to give change, just rode on his mind set elsewhere.

Finally riding out of the pirates' encroachment, Barda tosed off his spear and drew out his trusty bow. He was only 707 meters from his target, and he didn't even need time. By the time he had drawn his bow, the Android AI would have already calculated the arrow's flight plans taking into account the wind, friction, and obstruction.

Barda didn't need tactical breathing while aiming, he didn't even need to close one eye as he could do this with his eyes closed. It was not his eyes that aimed but the AI, all he had to do was to place the bow and arrow in the direction calculated, apply the calculated amount of enemy and release at the precise moment. He couldn't miss it even if he tried.

With a smile at the thought, Barda let lose the arrow.
