Chương 18: Favorite Sister

"Anna.... help," Evan greeted his older sister, gesturing desperately behind him.

"I still don't understand what happened. How did she—"

Evan dragged her into the office, quickly explaining the mix up with the juice. Anna was attentive while he spoke, pausing only to put her bag on the table. They had similar features, with their dark hair and eyes, while Anna had rosy cheeks and long eyelashes, and Evan had a squared jaw; Anna was dainty and maternal while Evan was sturdy and calm. They were considered quite a power team in their school years, despite their difference in age.

When they were younger, she was the one Evan ran to when he needed help. Even as his comic took off, he sought his sisters advice. Maybe that was why he never hesitated to call her. No matter how old they were, his older sister was there for him.

There was the sound of a door opening and closing as Zane retreated to get food. Anna took it as a sign, and nudged her brother's arm. "Where is she?" She asked, deciding they had delayed long enough. Evan motioned, and Anna made her way to the living room, greeting Rylee as she entered. "We haven't had a chance to meet. I'm Anna, Evan's sister," she smiled.

Rylee was rearranging the buttons on her hat, and dropped it on surprise. "You're too pretty to be Evan's sister," she declared.

Anna laughed and took a seat next to her, carefully moving the hat out of harms way. She had dealt with her share of drunk sorority sisters, and came prepared. "Evan told me there was an accident yesterday. I'm surprised you aren't tired from all of that stress," she exclaimed.

"I am tired, but needed to work. And he has to work," Rylee looked annoyed by her lack of coherent sentences. "Work, work, work..." she leaned over, nearly falling off the couch as she made a dive for her empty mug. Anna moves quickly, and tucked her back against the couch.

"That's so cool, what do you do for a living?"

"There's a craft store," she explained, pleased with the attention.

Evan watched, dumbstruck. Anna made it look so simple. It was clear he called the right person.

The door reopened, and Zane entered, carrying a pizza box in his arms. Rylee's eyes lit up, and it wasn't hard to get her to eat. Before long, Anna had convinced her to relax on the couch, tucked her in with a blanket, and they watched as she fell into a heavy sleep.

"Let me talk to Tara. You guys are stupid, but harmless. At least you called for help," she sighed. Evan started to follow, and she gave him a scolding glare. "No, you wait with her. If she vomits you get to clean it up. I've already taken care of the hard part."

Evan withered under her expression, and sighed, returning to Rylee's side. Compared to the emotional mess earlier, she seemed peaceful now. Her hair was fanned out around her, her fingers holding the blanket to her chest. Without meaning to, he touched his nose where she had kissed it earlier, still selfishly wishing it had been his lips. How could one person tangle him up in so many emotions? It was one day, but each incident felt like years between them. If anyone should be falling for her, it made more sense for it to be someone she was already friends with.

In the doorway, Anna watched, an amused expression on her face. Tara has been easy enough to pacify, although she pitied Zane. This was the second time harm fell on Rylee in their care. In the end, this incident didn't seem to create any long term damage, so they escaped the roommates wrath. Had her stitches opened, or she injured herself further, they would have truly had something to fear.

Anna looked over at Zane who was leaning heavily on the kitchen counter. "How long have they known each other?" She asked.

Zane blinked in surprise, "I introduced them yesterday, actually."

The surprise on her face was evident, and she considered the situation. "Evan won't be competing with you, will he?" She asked, getting straight to the point.

"Competing?" Zane flashed an almost amused smile. "No. She's like my sister. We are close, but it's not romantic. Why do you think I tried to hard to let them meet?"

Anna seemed surprised. "Why Zane, I never imagined you would be a little matchmaker. But seriously, I'm his sister, I would rather divert him now before there is any drama. You two are best friends, I don't want a girl to come between you."

For the first time in two days, Zane almost looked relaxed. He looked at her with a thoughtful expression that was devoid of his normal devious glint.

"Anna, have you ever met someone who just got the crap beat out of them by life? And you think, if you could give them the world, you would, because they deserve it?" Anna shook her head, but seemed to invite him to continue. "Ry, she is a great person, but life keeps kicking her, and as a friend, I just want to see her happy.

"Maybe I've been stupid trying to match them up, but I feel like Evan might be the person who can give her those things..."
