At the hospital, a woman was yelling her head off while nurses tried their best to calm her down.
"No! No! No!"
At first, those walking on the hallway did not pay much attention to it. But suddenly, a man's yell caught their attention.
"ARGGGGGH!"
"Crazy woman! Let me go!!!" thought Han Ye as veins bulged out from his forehead. He kept glaring at Xiao Lei who was closing her eyes tightly as she yelled "No!" over and over again. If he knew that the woman was afraid of needles, he would not have sat so near to her. She seemed edgy earlier, but he thought that it was because she had a secret to hide.
Well, she had a secret alright! A secret where she was an adult who was deadly afraid of needles!
The woman was so afraid of needles, that the moment she saw the needle, she started trembling and she grabbed onto the nearest thing when the doctor got near her. Unfortunately, the nearest thing that she grabbed onto was his thigh.
She was basically digging her nails into his thigh at this point!
"OK! OK! We're done!" Dr. Phillip snapped and pulled his arms up to show her that he was done. He had never seen an adult woman who was so afraid of needles!
Han Ye glared at the woman, and he noticed that her eyes were red and her face flushed.
"Is she really… an adult?" thought Han Ye. He felt bad for her, but at the same time, he wanted to laugh at her.
She was crying, her lips quivering as she looked at her wound.
"Hey, Ms. Xiao Lei... " asked Han Ye. Her hand was still on his thigh and it was dangerously closed to his erogenous zone. Even though he had good control over himself, he would rather not be put in that kind of situation.
"Uh hem!" He cleared his throat lightly and with two fingers, he tried to pick up her hand but she still grabbed onto him tightly. "Erm, Ms. Xiao Lei…?"
She looked at him with her bloodshot eyes and he pointed down. When she saw that her hand was on his thigh, she blushed and pulled it away.
"Damn it, Xiao Lei! Don't just go around grabbing any hot guys you see! Haven't you embarrassed yourself enough?!" thought Xiao Lei as she looked away, flustered. Her face had turned red completely at this point. In her embarrassment, she had even forgotten her pain from being stabbed with the last needle earlier.
Dr. Phillip was writing something in her file when he noticed that Xiao Lei was looking at him.
"Yes, Ms. Xiao?"
"I want a lollipop…"
"Huh?"
"Lollipop... "
Dr. Phillip sighed. He hated dealing with adults. Such an attitude was cute in a kid, but not so much in an adult. He reached into his desk and picked up a cute Totoro lollipop before he handed it to Xiao Lei with a smile. "Here you go... Why don't you guys wait outside while we prepare for the next test?"
Once all the test was done, Dr. Phillip said, "Come back at 10 a.m in the morning, and don't eat after 9 p.m. We need to do a fasting blood test tomorrow, and we'll do a urine test as well."
"Again?" Xiao Lei looked at him, horrified. The idea of being poked again caused her body to shiver involuntarily and her eyes watered.
Afraid that she would start crying again, Han Ye quickly chimed in, "Don't worry. This one is just a nick. I took it once a year. It doesn't hurt that bad."
Xiao Lei sighed. "$250,000." She kept thinking about the amount to make herself braver. With that amount of money, she could send her son to any university of his choice. There would be no reason for him to go to community college because she could not afford the tuition fees.
When they were on their way back, Han Ye kept taking quick glances at her. She was sucking on her lollipop while she enjoyed the breeze coming in from the window that she rolled down.
"Why do I feel that she's familiar?" thought Han Ye as he turned his gaze back on the road.
After a while, Xiao Lei rubbed the little bandaid as she murmured, "Mr. Han, needles are scary. I can't believe you'd voluntarily take the blood test every year."
"It's for our annual health checkup. Part of our employee benefit. President Du made all employees do it every year and the company will pay for it. He doesn't want anyone to forget about their health."
Instead of being impressed, she frowned and narrowed her eyes at him. "That's a horrible employee benefit! Just give them money!"
Han Ye chuckled. "You gave birth before. Isn't that more painful?"
"Yeah… But my husband was there… Well, he had three broken bones."
"What?"
She laughed at the memory. "It was so painful, Mr. Han. Giving birth, I mean. My husband was in the room with me and I remember blaming him for knocking me up. I was shouting 'This is your fault!' and his face at that time was so funny... He didn't understand that I was talking from pain..."
She smiled and looked at Han Ye as she said wryly, "I was crying from the pain and when I grabbed his hand, I accidentally exert too much strength and broke his fingers."
She then looked at Han Ye wryly as she said, "He never knocked me up again after that... "
Han Ye gulped. It was a good thing that it was his thigh and not his hand that ended up in her hand. Otherwise, he doubted that he would be able to drive home. Han Ye smiled. "Your husband… I heard he left... "
Xiao Lei looked away from him. She rested her elbow on the windowsill and rested her chin on the back of her hand as she answered in a soft voice, "Yeah."
"Do you miss him?"
She clenched her fingers tightly into fists and hesitated for a long time before she replied, "A lot… All the time… Every second... But I believe he will be back one day."
She did not really want to talk about her husband with someone she just met, but it had been a while since anyone talked about her husband. Even Zhi Hao did not talk about him that often. It was as if he was afraid that she would break down.
But to her, she was afraid that if no one talked about him, it would make it seemed as if he was never there.
"That's good…" said Han Ye as he kept his eyes on the road.
